What is Faith?

Bible's Definition:

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; The evidence of things unseen." Hebrews 11:1
A Few Scriptures on Faith: Matt 21:21-22 21. "Verely I say unto you, if ye have faith and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be cast into the see: it shall be done. 22. And all things, whatsoever ye ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Romans 10:17 "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." 2 Cor. 2:5 "For we walk by faith, not by sight." 1 Cor. 2:5 "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; The evidence of things unseen." Examples of Faith Example: Say you go to sit on a chair, well you just know that it is going to hold you up. What if it doesn't hold you up? Have you ever thought that? Most likely someone isn't going to be thinking, "will this chair hold me up?" They just know it will. And to even go further, they actually sit down in the chair because they knew without a doubt that it was going to hold them up.

That is similar to what faith is.We know without a doubt that God will do something. The only thing to this example is that you

might be thinking "But they sit down in the chair without a doubt that the chair will hold them up, because they see dozens of people being held up by chairs everyday and they've never see a chair fail and that we've maybe never seen things happen because of faith.

But here's the thing...read Romans 10:17, "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." And that is how we get faith. By reading the Bible, it tells tons of miraculous stories of what God can do; the more we've seen it done in the Bible, the more we believe and have faith. And the more we see chairs hold people up, the less we're going to have to think before we sit down, "Will this chair hold me up?" Something to note is that we always put our trust in chairs (the man made, that can fail), and yet we seldom put our trust in God, our creator. (The one who can't fail) Example: Say a guy goes to the doctor and the doctor says that he has cancer and that there's no way that this cancer will go away because it's too bad now. Well this guy believes that God is more powerful than what man can understand, (1 Cor. 2:5) And so he prays to God for God to heal him and then believes that He will be healed, and God heals him. Analogy : Remember one of the Indiana Jones' movies, when there was this cliff and Indiana had to somehow get to the other side even though he saw nothing to walk on to get there, and yet even though from what it looked like there was no way possible of getting over there and that he would fall, he still stepped out and sure enough there was a board that was there to walk on, but it was invisible. Not saying to walk off a cliff, this is only an analogy. Plus, God gave us common sense and a brain to use and to be wise. But that is how I think of it, kind of like this.

Scriptures on how to ask and how to receive things from God:

Matt. 21:22 "And in all things whatsoever ye ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." James 4:3 "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." 1 John 5:14 "And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, he heareth us." 2 Cor. 1:20 "For all the promises of God are yea (true)." 1 Peter 3:12 "For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open unto their prayers, but the face of the Lord are against them that do evil." Proverbs 3:5-6 5. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding, 6. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths." Philipians 4:6 b "Let your requests be made known to God." Faith scriptures: Matt 21:21-22 21. 2:5 "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

1 Cor. 2:5 "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; The evidence of things unseen." Luke 17:5 -6 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you." Matt 6:30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Matt 8:10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. Matt 8:26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matt 9:2 Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven." Matt 9:22 Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment. Matt 9:29 Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you"; Matt 13:58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith. Matt 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

Matt 15:28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. Matt 14:25-32 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." Matt 16:8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Matt 17:20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Sara, in the Bible, wanted a son but she was too old to be able to have a one, and God said that she would have a son, but even though it was impossible, Sara had faith by believing the impossible (All things are possible with God Phil 4:13) she believed that God would do what He said and sure enough, he did. She had a son.
