CLASS 1/2 BULLETIN TERM 2, 2013

Inquiry unit How are we smart with energy? Our Term 2 unit of inquiry is called How are we smart with energy? Students will be learning about where our energy resources come from, how we use energy and exploring ways we can be energy smart. Through hands-on investigation and discussion they will look at how energy can be transformed and stored and use their five senses to observe energy changes. Literacy In reading lessons for Term 2 students will learn the following reading comprehension strategies: Visual texts Making inferences Finding the main idea Visualising Summarising In writing lessons, students will explore and practise the conventions of the following writing genres: information reports scientific reports explanations Maths In maths students will continue to gain skills and strategies for working with and representing numbers. Our science learning will provide opportunities for measuring, collecting and interpreting data in contexts that help them learn about sustainable choices with energy. In particular students will learn about: addition and subtraction strategies time, clocks and calendars. Term 2 talking points

Show and Tell Bring in a photo (or drawing) of an animal who is special to you or your family. Cold weather! Explain what you do to warm up at home. Music. Is there music you really enjoy? Where do you listen to it? Who with? Do you sing or dance along? Energy use. Are there choices you make at home to help your family use less energy? Family reading. Are there stories, poems or rhymes special to your family? Tell the class about your favourites. Healthy mind. Make a list of things you do or think which help you to feel positive and happy. Free choice.

Weekly Homework All students at Malmsbury PS are expected to complete some learning tasks at home each week. This is a good opportunity for parents to become involved in their childs learning. For Grade 1/2 homework will be: help your child to plan and practise for a engaging, 2 min show & tell each week share reading time together every day and talk about the story/article afterwards play backgammon, snakes & ladders, yahtzee, battleship or other games which sharpen up mathematical thinking.
