Tips on Tipping
A brief guide to customary tipping practices in India

Tips on Tipping
Since you are in an unfamiliar place with new cultural rules, we have put together a brief guide to customary tipping practices in India. As of 1/1/2008, 37 - 39 Rupees (Rs.) equates to one U.S. Dollar, depending on the exchange rate at the time of exchanging dollars. However, 39 rupees relative to a dollar has greater purchasing power. The average laborer you may encounter earns probably no more than Rs.4,000 per month. Drivers Rs.50 - 100 per day is appropriate. You may choose to tip your driver either on a daily basis or at the end of your stay. You are likely to find the drivers to be friendly, and that they know the city well. They have been known to invite patrons to their family homes. This is meant as a sign of respect, but we advise you to refrain from accepting these invitations. Ensure your driver speaks and understands English. Traffic is terrible in the morning between 8:30 and 10:00 am and in the evening from 5:45 pm. Plan your leaving and arriving, or ask your driver for alternative routes.
Hotel Room service: It is customary, although not mandatory, to tip room service delivery staff. Rs.10-20 is sufficient.
Restaurants and bars: 10-15% of the bill is the norm, except at breakfast, which is often a buffet. At breakfast, tipping is discretionary. You may just wish to reward a particularly helpful member of staff at the end of your stay. Laundry/Housekeeping: Again, not mandatory, but laundry staff would appreciate Rs.10-20 on delivery. For housekeeping, we recommend Rs.100 every 3 or 4 days of your stay. (This guarantees fresh flowers!) Doorman, Valet: As with Room Service, Rs.10-20 is acceptable, although not every time someone opens the door for you.
24
Tips on Tipping
Out and About Auto Rickshaws: Three-wheelers are seen almost on all the roads. If you choose to use one (and its a unique experience you may want to have), insist on using the billing meter. If the operator refuses, simply flag down another one.
Within the city, you should not expect to pay more than Rs.50 for a oneway trip. After 10.00 p.m. the fare jumps to 1.5 x the meter reading. Restaurants and bars: 15% of the bill is acceptable. In bars you will often get a check at the end of the night and one waiter will have been allocated to you throughout. So theres no need to tip every time you order a drink.

Understanding Indian culture: Unwilling to accept blame - R10 professionals tend not to accept blame easily. This should not be misconstrued as arrogance, nor are they shying away from accepting responsibility for errors committed. In India, maintaining ones dignity is very important. Accepting fault/blame may imply that ones dignity is at stake. Avoiding confrontation - In a culture of politeness, R10 personnel avoid confrontation and hence tend to be indirect. They often find it hard to say no or raise problematic issues effectively. Meaning of Yes - A response of Yes by an R10 professional in a conversation is an acknowledgement of listening and not necessarily that of understanding or agreement. It is helpful to have the team summarize their understanding at the end of a meeting to ensure everyone is on the same page. Over-communication is better than just waiting for something that may never happen, happen too late or be done incorrectly. Try to build in touch points to make sure everyone is on the right track. Understand the body language, more specifically the Nod/head wobble - It does not mean yes or no. It is just a sign that the question was heard and/or request received. Its always good to ask for confirmation - ask them to explain the requirements and give you a timeline for completion. Direct communication - R10 professionals prefer face-toface or verbal communication over emails.
