Descriptive Essay Exercise 1- My Favorite Lake

My hometown, Kumamoto, has a beautiful, big lake called Ezu. That is one of my favorite places. Ezu Lake is made of two parts called "Upper Ezu" and "Lower Ezu." They look like the American continent. I think Upper Ezu is more beautiful than Lower Ezu.

There are many trees and grasses that grow around the lake and many springs in the lake. Of course, a few rivers flow into the lake, but many springs also make this lake. Lots of fish and birds live there. I don't know what kinds of fish live there, but I know some birds. Three kinds of white herons, night herons, wild ducks, kingfishers, and more kinds of birds live there. Kingfishers are beautiful blue birds. They look like emeralds. They fly like a flash when they catch a fish. Many birds float and swim. Some flock, and others are alone. Sometimes, herons or seagulls fly by. Those birds often fly alone, and calmly with the wind. They look relaxed. Small birds fly with a group. They fly a little faster, as if they were hurrying. Those sights are so peaceful. Ezu Lake is a treasury of wild birds.

Ezu Lake has very clear water, so fireflies can grow. We can see them in early May. Ezu Lake is near the downtown of Kumamoto-city, so most people don't realize that fireflies are there. As a result, we can see them very calmly in Ezu Lake. At night, many fireflies glimmer between the trees or over the water. They look like an illusion. Sometimes only two or three glimmer. They like a brief vision. When I see them, I feel that I am in a dream.

From spring to summer, many plants grow there, and birds do also. Skylarks, white-eyes, and thrushes sing joyfully. Seagulls, herons, and ducks screech huskily. Locusts also grow in summer. Their chirping is very noisy, but when we hear their chirping, we know summer is coming. The most famous of them make sounds like "Mearn min min min min......" I like sitting on a bench near the shore or under the trees, and listening to the birds' singing, the locusts' chirping, and children's funny voices. They enjoy swimming or fishing. When I am near the spring, I can hear the sound of water. It murmurs, like flowing water. Those sounds are so peaceful and make me relax.

Sometimes, I drink water from the springs. Many people say Kumamoto's water is delicious. Kumamoto has a layer of pumice stones, and it filters and makes good water to drink. The water doesn't have a chemical taste, and it is very natural. It is sweet and fresh. I like the water of Kumamoto so much.

Ezu Lake has very cool water. In summer, it is very good for swimming. I have been swimming in the lake. It was so cool, but the feeling was good. I enjoyed swimming. However, the water of springs is warm in winter, because the spring water is the same temperature each season.

In spring, the lake is full of the flowers' sweet smell, and in summer, the lake has the smell of grasses. After the rain, the lake has the earth's smell. Those smells are so fresh, and I like them. However, Ezu Lake has some stagnant places. Those places have a bad smell like spoiled fish, but other places are good.

I love Ezu Lake. It is near my home, and I can go there anytime I wish. It is very near the downtown. However, it has been preserved as a beautiful natural place. Ezu Lake is a peaceful and vigorous place. It has clean water and beautiful green trees and grasses, and many living creatures. I hope this part of nature will be kept untouched forever.

Descriptive Essay Exercise 2- The Horse Farm

I am jarred out of a relaxing sleep by a voice yelling my name in a loud whisper, and a light burning through my eyelids. Groggily, I open my eyes to see my father standing in the doorway to my messy room. He tells me that I need to get going, that it is 3:00 a.m., and I'm burning daylight. I find my clothes and get dressed. The whole time I wonder why I get up this early to visit the rugged outdoors. I want to go back to bed, but I know my dad will be back in to make sure I am getting ready, in a little bit. Instead, I put my boots and my wide-brimmed, black cowboy hat on, and walked out to catch the horses. The horses are all excited because it is dark and they are not that cooperative. My dad and I get them saddled and in the trailer, and go back into the house to get our lunch, water, and a cup of coffee. Now, we can head for the high country.

It is still dark when we get there, so our horses are still very alert; they keep moving around and snorting with eyes wide and nostrils flared. I strap my pistol to my hips and tie the tip of the holster to my leg so it doesn't flop. We are ready to go, so I take a deep breath of the sharp, clean, mountain air and step into the saddle. As we ride along in the dark, I begin to relax. Man, I love the smell of cool mountain air; there is nothing in the world quite like it. It is so refreshing for me.

As the sky begins to brighten to a gray, and the stars that were so brilliant just seconds ago begin to grow dim, my imagination starts to picture things moving that are really nothing but shadows in the trees. It is as if the shadows are racing around trying to find their owners before the sun peeks its gleaming face up over the horizon. A deer jumps from its bed, scaring the horses and pumping a quart of adrenaline through my system, as my pistol jumps to my hand. Once I realize it is just a deer, I put my pistol back in its holster.

In the last seconds before the sun rises, the sky turns a soft blue. The sun breaks the horizon and begins to shine its warmth down on me; I can see more of the beauty that is all around me. I can see beams of light perfectly outlining the ragged mountains, as I look across the valley. As the sun floats higher in the pure blue sky, it reveals more and more of the beauty that the land holds. In every direction my eyes take in the trees, cattle grazing on a side hill, and elk moving through the aspen trees. Sometimes, when I am here, I will see a coyote appear and then vanish like the wind.

Each time I visit this place I get the same relaxing feeling, yet in a way it is new. When I look upon the beauty of nature, I know that these places were created knowing there would be people like me on earth to enjoy them.

Exercise 3- Types of College Students You have just graduated from high school and passed the Standard Academic Test. Your application to college has been accepted and its your first day at class. It is most likely you will encounter three types of college students on your campus. The three types of college students are usually called the jocks, the nerds, and the normal people. The reason for this essay is to clear up some concepts regarding the three types of college students.

One group, The Jocks, is the show-off type of people who puts off their homework assignments until the last minute. Once the assignment is completed at the last minute, the assignment is usually scored a low grade. The reason for this is because the jocks are always partying, going out on dates, or having fun with their sorority. The jocks wear anything to include torn jeans/shirts, work down sneakers or boots and cheap, expensive-looking jacket.

The second group, known campus-wide, is the nerds because they are obsessed with books, constantly studying and learning about their interests. The nerds are usually annoying with their obnoxious laughter regarding a really stupid joke. The nerds wear a nice shirt with a bow tie, or a tie and a nicely ironed dress pants and always has a pocket protector to prevent ink stains from their pens. The nerd spends their school night with a tight schedule for recreation, school homework, and learning new things that captures their interests. Computer programming, calculator programming, the biology of their pet frog are some of the common things that interests the nerds.

The third group is the normal group, they are usually typical college students attending their scheduled classes, getting the homework assignments done and turned in on time. The normal group is usually mothers/fathers that have hired baby sitters to watch their son(s)/daughter(s) while they attend the college they are enrolled in. They spend their recreation time studying, exercising, having fun with their friends, spending time with family, or simply offering their time to give back to their community.

In Conclusion, there is no college campus without any of the three groups explained above. They are in each and every campus nationwide and they make the college campus more interesting, specifically for the psychology students. In my opinion, I think of myself on the borderline between the Jock and the nerds. On the jock side, I tend to postpone the homework assignments sometimes and eventually end up doing all of the assignments at the last-minute. On the nerd side, I never miss a day without using the internet and/or the computer, because I always use the computer to get my homework assignments done for most of the classes.

Descriptive Essay Exercise 5- Visit to a Zoo

The rain had been failing continuously for the last three or four days. We had been virtually imprisoned in our rooms. Some of my friends and I decided to enjoy this Sunday thoroughly. We started 10 A.M and reached the Edward Memorial Zoological Garden, Lucknow, at 11. A.M.

As we entered the gate, we noticed two [airs of monkeys of a special type. Standing near the boundary, some small children were giving them bananas. These monkeys, know as Gorillas, walked like man to take them. There chattering was also, more or less, similar to the voice of man. They could imitate the various actions of man. One of them walked with a stick in his hand. They interested us very much. In fact, gorillas and chimpanzees are the nearest relations of man in hierarchy of evolution.

Just a few steps ahead, on the left hand, we saw the bird's section. They were kept in very large enclosures surrounded by wire gauze. Inside the enclosures, there were trees, a small tank, a few water-pots etc. There were birds of numerous types. They attracted us very much. Their multicolored winds and different notes were very charming. Some ducks and cranes were swimming in the tank. Cranes looked very beautiful. We also saw two ostriches. They were white with beautiful red, long necks. The neck could be thrown out to a long distance like a spring. We liked them very much.

Then we turned towards the right hand. There were large enclosures with very strong and big iron gates. Though the iron bars of the gates we could see a pair of big lions. They very sight of them was frightening. Few small cubs were also playing inside it. But the condition of the lions was quite pitiable. It was other chambers, close to this chamber, there were panthers and tigers. They also did not appear to be quite comfortable inside their enclosures.

To the right of these enclosures, we observed a large trench. In some parts of if there was water. Tress were also growing in it. At first sight, it appeared to be a neglected area. But when we came near it and observed more keenly, we found at some distance a big Rhinoceros walking freely in it. We were told by a guide that its skin in very tough. A bullet could not pierce it. It would be rebounded. It was used for making shields. We were all surprised to learn this. Indeed, it was a frightful animal which we have never seen before.

One thing which we observed there, was the feeding arrangement for the different animals. The zoo authorities gave the most suitable diet to the different animals. Lions and other meat -eaters were given meat. Birds were given food grains which they liked. Those animals which liked to eat grass and green leaved, were left in grassy field. Thus they were kept in the most natural way. Still some of the animals who are great freedom lovers did not like artificial arrangement which were provided for them.

After spending about four hours in the Zoo, we decided to return. I felt that a great a addition has been made to my knowledge. Thus Zoo is a place of education as well s of entertainment. It may be suggested in the end that the animals kept in a Zoo must be treated sympathetically. Big animals, like the lions, leopards, etc, should be given their fill of food. They should not be kept hungry.
