SUBMODALITIES
Submodalities are the building blocks of subjective experience. These building blocks of our internal representations are based on the individual modalities of human experience, namely the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. Each of these modalities has a subset of components known in NLP as submodalities. Any time we experience anything, we take that external event and turn it into an internal representation, or our thoughts about that event. How we respond to our own subjective internal representations of the outside world determines how we feel about it, known as our state. Our state influences our physiology, which at the most base level literally means the functioning of our entire body. Its important to remember that our internal representations are never the same as the external event itself. Thats why we say the map is not the territory. Alfred Korzybski, in his book Science and Sanity, said Important characteristics of maps should be noted. A map is not the territory it represents, but if correct it has a similar structure to the territory, which accounts for its usefulness. Einstein said, Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge in the field of truth and knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods. The qualities of our internal representations; the pictures, sounds and feelings, are all made up of a further subset of distinctions. Pictures can be bright or dim, near or far, focussed or out of focus. Sounds may be loud or soft, rapid or slow, high or low pitch. Feelings can include sensations of smoothness or roughness, heavy or lightweight, cold or hot. The different qualities of our thoughts are what we know as submodalities.

THE PREFERENCE SWITCH

Have you ever wanted to dislike something that you really like, but knew was not good for you? Perhaps you drink too many cups of coffee every day, or you may be a chocoholic. We can use submodalities to change how we respond to things that we like or dislike. By changing how you code things in your unconscious mind, you change how you think and feel about those things. This process is best used with nouns: people, places and things. When eliciting submodalities, if the submodalities of the present and desired states are the same, you may need to choose a stronger contrasting picture. Alternately, you can change the key elements (drivers) of: Association, Colour, Location, and Size. Step In The Process 1. Identify two states/ behaviours to contrast. 2. Elicit the first picture. What To Say What is the <state/ behaviour/ thing> that you want to change? What is it that you like/ dislike? Close your eyes and on the screen in your mind, bring up a picture of (one of the pictures) and let me know when you have a picture there. Good - I'm going to ask you some questions about that picture and I want you to tell me the very first answer that comes up - we are going to do this very quickly. (Elicit the submodalities on your checklist). Excellent, now open your eyes. Now, this time when you close your eyes get a picture of the other <state/behaviour/thing>. Let me know when you have a picture. (Elicit submodalities using your checklist). Excellent, now open your eyes again.

3. Elicit the submodalities of the first picture.

4. Break state. 5. Elicit the submodalities for the contrasting picture. Remember speed is the key! 6. Break state. 7. Find the drivers of the submodalities. Identify the differences between the two sets of submodalities. 8. Change the drivers. Make the submodalities the same as the contrasting picture. Be directive. 9. Test and Future Pace.

Get the picture in your mind that you wish to change. Now, as quickly as I tell you, you will make the exact changes that I direct you to make, and you can do this easily and effortlessly. Think about that <state/ behaviour/ thing> that you used to <like/dislike> in the past, and tell me what do you notice now?

BELIEF QUADRANTS
This process can be used to change a limiting belief about yourself. Examples of uses:

Im a slow learner. I dont deserve that. Im not smart enough. I dont have enough money. I dont have enough time. Im not good with money. Im not a good net-worker.

1 3

2 4

Step In The Process 1. Elicit picture 1 No Longer True Belief. 2. Elicit the submodalities (picture 1). 3. Break state. 4. Elicit picture 2 Unwanted Belief.

What To Say Think of a belief which is no longer true for you, and get a picture of that in your mind. Do you have the picture? Open your eyes. Good, now think of a limiting belief about yourself you wish you did not have, and get a picture of that in your mind. Do you have that picture? Good. Open your eyes. Im going to tell you to make some changes now. When I tell you, youll make those changes easily and very quickly. I want you to nod your head as soon as youve made each change. Now, what do you notice about that old belief? Good, now think of a belief which is absolutely true, and get a picture of that belief. Do you have that picture?

5. Elicit the submodalities (picture 2). 6. Break state. 7. Change the Drivers. Notice the drivers and change the submodalities of picture 2 into those of picture 1. 8. Test. 9. Elicit picture 3 Absolutely True Belief. 10. Elicit submodalities (picture 3). 11. Break state. 12. Elicit picture 4 Wanted Belief.

Good, now think of a belief you want to have, which is opposite of that old belief you used to have, and get a picture of this new belief. Do you have that picture? Good.

13. Elicit the submodalities (picture 4). Keep eyes closed and go to step 14 14. Map across submodalities. Notice the drivers and map across the submodalities of picture 4 into those of picture 3. 15. Test.

Just like before, youre going to make some changes now. When I tell you, youll make those changes easily and very quickly. I want you to nod your head as soon as youve made each change. Now, what do you believe?

VISUAL PERSPECTIVE
This process is used to remove the emotional component of a negative or troubling image, or to enhance the positive emotions associated to a positive image.

1 3

2 4

Troubling image

Step In The Process 1. Access a troubling image. Test to be sure it is still troublesome, and calibrate the persons non-verbal response to it. 2. Identify four resourceful experiences. Have the person find an image that represents each of the four relevant resourceful experiences. 3. Create a collage. Have the person create a large collage with these four images (2 up and 2 down). 4. Insert the small troubling image. Place the troubling image in the centre of the collage. It should be small, and just overlap the inner corners of the four resourceful images. It should lie flat, becoming part of the collage. 5. Calibrate the non-verbal response. Calibrate to the persons non-verbal response, which should spontaneously become more resourceful. If not, back up to make adjustments to the resources or troubling image. 6. Test and future pace.

What To Say (Your Own Script)

Notes:

Before you place the negative image into the collage, you can anchor the positive feelings (state) generated by the collage of positive images. You should let the client choose which corner to place each of the positive images. If they say they cant find any images, let them make a symbol instead. THE COMPASSION FORMULA

You will not always have a lot of time to spend when an issue comes up for you. The 10 steps of the compassion formula will help you to resolve issues in your life when you arent in a position to do more formal, closed-eye techniques. 1. Identify 2. Invitation What specifically is the problem or situation? How did you attract or invite this into your life, either by your actions or inaction? 3. Mirror 4. Compassion 5. Objectivity 6. Lessons 7. Store 8. Release 9. Decide What aspects of yourself are being reflected back to yourself? See the problem or situation through the other persons eyes. See the problem or situation through the eyes of an observer. What lessons do you need to learn from this problem or situation? Store the learnings. Release the blame. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Make a new decision about what this old problem or situation means to you now. 10. Lock It In Test and future pace.

SWISH PATTERN
Step In The Process 1. Elicit the desired state Wait for response. 2. Adjust the submodalities You may need to talk them through each submodality. What To Say Get a picture of your desired state - what you do want. When you have that picture, let me know. Good, now I'd like you to imagine there are knobs like on an old TV that will let you adjust the colour, brightness and the overall picture. Play with that knob until the picture on the screen of your mind is very intense and compelling. Let me know when it is as good as it can get. Good, now make sure you see yourself in that picture like you are looking at a photograph (dissociated), then shrink that picture so it is just a tiny dot and put it in a lower corner of the screen in your mind. Then open your eyes. Now, when you close your eyes, I'd like you to imagine you have that old state or behaviour happening to you now (associated). Go ahead and get that picture now, see what you see, hear what you hear and feel what you feel, now. Let me know when you are there. Good, now notice how you are in this old behaviour or state, you can notice that small dot in the corner. In a moment, I'm going to say the word "swish" and as I do, you will explode that small picture right over the top of this one you see here. Ready, 1-2-3, Swish... Good, now shrink that picture back into the corner. We are going to do that a number of times in a row. As soon as the picture explodes into full view, quickly shrink it back down again; let me know when you can't get the current picture back. It's as easy as...swish. Can you get the old picture back?

3. Associate to desired state

4. Associate to undesired state

5. Pre-frame the Swish

6. Swish Continue Swishing at least five times or until the present state picture is no longer available.

7. Test Ask client about the picture. Continue swishing until they cannot. 8. Future Pace

Imagine an unspecified time in the future which if it had happened in the past, you would have had that <old state> and tell me what you notice now. How is it different?

COLLAPSING ANCHORS
Step In The Process What To Say 1. Pre-frame the technique Explain that you will be applying a kinaesthetic anchor at the peak of an experience. 2. Elicit the undesired state to Can you remember a specific time when you had that be collapsed. <undesired state>. 3. Associate fully into the state Go back to that time now... go right back to that time, float Get them fully associated. Say it (or step) into your body so that you are really in that a few times as you calibrate experience now for the last time. See what you saw, hear their physiology and get their what you hear, and really feel the feelings of being <in nod. Don't guess; ensure you desired state>. have set up some means of communication. 4. Provide a specific stimulus At the absolute peak of that state, when you feel it so very at the peak to create the intensely, when it cant get any stronger, set that anchor. Set anchor it for 5 10 seconds and then open your eyes. 5. Break state, test the anchor, Open your eyes. Can you smell coffee / popcorn? then break state again. Fire the anchor and notice if the negative state returns (it should). Shake off the state. 6. Elicit the desired or Remember a positive state (perhaps the opposite of the preferred state negative state). Close your eyes. Can you remember a specific time when you were in this state? 7. Associate fully Go back to that time now... go right back to that time, float (or step) into your body so that you are really in that experience now. See what you saw, hear what you hear, and really feel the feelings of being <in desired state>. 8. Turn up the submodalities Make the pictures brighter, more colourful, moving, bigger. Amplify the sounds so that they are crystal clear and loud, compelling, strong. Focus on the feelings and turn them up also, noticing where in your body they start and then having them grow and spread throughout your entire body. Keep turning up, enhancing all the sights, sounds, feelings until they are as compelling as possible 9. Anchor it in a different place At the absolute peak of that state, when you feel it so very intensely, when it cant get any better, set that anchor. Set it for 5 10 seconds and then open your eyes. 10. Break state, test the anchor, Open your eyes. Can you smell coffee / popcorn? then break state again Fire the anchor and notice the positive state return. Shake off the state. 11. Collapse the negative anchor Fire (set off) both anchors at the same time. At the peak (calibrate physiology), release the negative anchor and continue to hold the desired state anchor for a further few seconds. It is to be expected that the desired state anchor and response will neutralise the old response. 12. Test and future pace Fire your anchor and notice what has happened to that old state you used to have. Imagine a time in the future where you may have gone into that old state. What is different as you think about it now? www.SuccessDynamicsInstitute.com Success Dynamics Institute 2009 Fast Track NLP Emotional Mastery All Rights Reserved Worldwide

PARTS
The concept of Parts represents the process of internal conflict and incongruence. Whenever there are two opposing desired outcomes (often both are desired equally, or there is confusion as to which is more important), we can say that the person has developed parts. Often, one of the parts is being consciously denied or rejected, which only serves to strengthen its influence over the individual. Parts often represent minor personalities, and are often born from SEEs, or significant emotional events. They usually have their own values and belief systems. Parts represent an incongruence in the person, as the parts themselves are incongruent. A common example of someone with parts is a person who has been inactive for a period of time, and now wishes to join a gym and get back into shape. Commonly, people in this situation find that they have parts which are in conflict with each other, and this is usually very easy to identify by their spoken and body language. They may be heard to say things such as, Part of me wants to go to the gym, and part of me just wants to relax after a hard day at work. Another common way this is expressed is with the saying, On one hand (abc), but on the other hand (xyz)... Reintegration of parts is possible. Through parts integration we help the person to realise that both parts exist to fulfil a positive intention, and were once part of the larger whole. When they experience this realisation, the conflict is resolved and they are able to choose an appropriate course of action, or make a satisfying decision which ends the internal conflict.

Examples of Parts:

A part of me wants to lose weight, a part of me doesnt want to put in the effort. I want to meet new people, but I like being on my own. On one hand I want to get a new job, but on the other Im fine where I am. I dont have enough time to do homework, but I have plenty of time to surf the internet. I want to be more outgoing, but something stops me. I want to be in a relationship, but I dont want to give up my freedom.

PARTS INTEGRATION
Step In The Process 1. Identify parts and the conflict. 2. Elicit the first part. 3. Elicit the submodalities of the first part. What To Say What is the conflict? Close your eyes. Have the part that represents the unwanted state or behaviour come out on your first hand. What does it look like? Does it look like anyone you know? Are there any relevant sounds that are associated with it? What does it feel like (if you were to touch it)? Are there any feelings associated with it? For what purpose does this part exist? For what intention? What will that give you? What does that get for you? What will that allow you? Now have the part that represents the opposite state or behaviour come out on your other hand. What does it look like? Does it look like anyone you know? Are there any relevant sounds that are associated with it? What does it feel like (if you were to touch it)? Are there any feelings associated with it? For what purpose does this part exist? For what intention? What will that give you? What does that get for you? What will that allow you? Ask the left hand to look at the right hand and notice what resources or attributes it would like to have from that part. What resources or attributes do you notice.. any more... anymore... Now have the right hand look at the left hand and notice what resources or attributes it would like to have from that part. What resources or attributes do you notice.. any more... anymore... Now have both parts notice that theyve identified many positive things about each other, and that as they have the same highest intention for you, they were once both part of a larger whole. Ask for any other parts that were also once part of the larger whole. Have them join in the integration. You may feel your hands wanting to come together to integrate these two parts. If so, allow these parts to come together, and at the same time, allow the internal images to merge together and form a new symbol. What new symbol represents that integrated whole? Create (visualize) a third part with the combined resources of each part, and place this third image, this new super part, in between the other two parts. What is the new symbol that represents that integrated whole? Take the integrated part inside and have it merge into the wholeness inside. Breathe it in, and allow it to find its place to live.

4. Chunk up the first part. This separates intention from behaviour. Continue until you get to the highest intention. 5. Elicit second part. Elicit the 2nd part on other hand. 6. Elicit the submodalities of the second part.

7. Chunk up the second part. Continue until you get to the highest intention. 8. Notice resources and larger whole. Have the parts look at each other to identify resources, and that they were once part of a larger whole.

9. Identify any other involved parts. 10. Integrate the parts. Bring hands together and at the same time have the internal images begin to merge. 11. If they dont integrate If the hands do not come together automatically. 12. Merge integrated parts with the whole. 13. Test and future pace. www.SuccessDynamicsInstitute.com Success Dynamics Institute 2009

FORGIVENESS PROCESS
This process is a variation of the parts integration. It allows you to integrate your forgiving part and unforgiving part to have more wholeness and compassion for yourself and others. Step In The Process 1. Locate the forgiving part. 2. Give the forgiving part a form. What To Say Locate where in your body the forgiving part of you lives? When you forgive where do you do it from? Notice any feelings that are in this part of your body. Allow yourself to feel these feeling and let them flow into the open palm of your left hand. Take this energy and let it take a form. What does it look like? What does it feel like? What shape, size and texture does it have? Imagine what it might sound like. Think of someone or something that you have never forgiven. Your unconscious mind has until now refused to forgive it. It lives in your unforgiving part. Locate where in your body the unforgiving part of you lives. Go to that part now. This is where things stay when you dont forgive them. Notice the feelings that are in this part of body. Allow yourself to feel these feelings and take your time as you let those feelings flow into the open palm of your right hand. Take this energy and let it take a form you can see, and tell me.. What does it look like? What does it feel like? What shape, size and texture does it have? Imagine what it might sound like. Now, bring your awareness to the left hand, the forgiving part, and ask it.. "What is the gift you are giving me?" Ask for it's positive intention and purpose until it gives you one that appears to be very high. (Like survival, or to live, or exist) Bring your awareness to the right hand the unforgiving part and ask it... "What is the gift you are giving me?" Ask for it's positive intention and purpose until it gives you one that appears to be very high. (Like survival, or to live, or exist). Ask each hand or part separately, if they can understand and appreciate the value and usefulness of each other... When each hand accepts the other, allow them to realise that it is important for them to work and come together as one. Allow them to come together now to create a super part that will accomplish both of their positive intentions. When they work together the negatives will be set free. Now, slowly allow your hands to come together. Watch and let the parts and hands meet, mix and merge. Take your time and let them become one part, one image. Now what does the new image and part look like?... Good. And now ask the new image what is the gift that it has for you? What will it allow you to do? Take a moment to imagine how you can experience and benefit now and in the future as the new integrated you. Thats good. And when you are complete, take this new image and part into your heart to merge with the wholeness inside of you... Good. Open your eyes and come back to now.

3. Locate the unforgiving part.

4. Give the unforgiving part a form.

5. Realize the purpose of the forgiving part. 6. Realize the purpose of the unforgiving part. 7. Have the parts appreciate and accept each other. 8. Integrate the parts.

9. Identify the new, integrated part. 10. Future pace. 11. Merge into the wholeness inside. 12. Back to now.
