McCormick Family History

Edward McCormick Edward McCormick was born in Lispopple, north County Dublin (close to Killossery), around 1817. His father was probably Lawrence McCormick who is listed as a tenant in Lispopple in the Griffith Valuation of 1847 (see source material). I have been unable to find his mothers name. He married Teresa Crawley, from Ballamagera, Dunleer, Co. Louth on 1st December 1849. Teresas parents were John Crawley and Margaret Campbell (dates unknown), who married in St. Bridgets Dunleer on 9th February 1812. She had at least 3 sisters; Mary born 1815, Bridget born 1817, and Anne born in 1822. In 1852 Edward was a major witness at the coroners court in a murder case (see newspaper article in the source material). Edward and Teresa appear to have had about 11 children. Edward was noted in Slaters 1881 Directory as one of the Nobility, Gentry or Clergy of the Swords area. He was also mentioned in the 1894 Slaters Directory as a private resident (which probably means that he now owned the land). On 30th July 1877 auctioneers advertised the letting of 150 acres of Edwards grazing land.
Figure 1: McCormick House, Lispopple (now modernised and no longer in the family)

Teresa died on the 11th September 1893 at Lispopple and her death was registered by Edward. She was buried in the family plot in Killossery. Please see a separate document which details all information sourced so far on the Crawley and Campbell families of Dunleer.

McCormick Family History

Edward died on 29th October 1899 aged 82 years. His profession was listed as farmer. The cause of death was Arrhythmia cordis. The death was registered by his son Laurence who was present at his death. He was buried along with Teresa in Killossery cemetery in the family plot. Probate of Edwards will was granted on 29th November 1899 to Edward McCormick (Jnr). Effects listed as 2,515 3s 1d. (Source: Calendar of Will National Archives, Bishop Street, Dublin). Will was destroyed in fire at Four Courts in 1922.

The following except is from the funeral notice:

Yesterday the remains of this much lamented gentleman were laid to rest in the old family burial ground at Killossery. He was one of the oldest and most respected members of the community in which he lived. Born 82 years ago in the parish in which he breathed his last, he grew from boyhood to manhood, and manhood to old age and retaining through his long career the universal admiration and esteem with all of whom he came in contact. His kindly nature and genial disposition won him troops of friends, while his straightforward, honest and upright character and the Christian life he led, practising all the virtues of a devout and sincere Catholic and doing good to all who came in his way made him an example to follow and a character to admire. The esteem in which he was held was evidenced by the large and representative gathering that followed his remains to the grave, the largest perhaps seen in the area for years. Amongst those who attended or sent carriages we noticed Laurence, Joseph and Edward McCormick sons; Richard Delany, Michael Moran, Patrick Callan and James Stack sons-in-law; Joseph, Christopher and Edward Delany, and Peter and Edward Moran, grandsons. (and a long list of other local notables).

McCormick Family History

Mary Jane McCormick Mary-Jane McCormick was born c. 1851 in Lispopple, Swords, the eldest of Edward and Teresas children. She married Richard Delany from Killossery on 24th October 1869 in Rolestown Church at 18 years of age. The witnesses were Daniel Archbold (Richards cousin) and Margaret McCormick (Mary-Janes sister). There would appear to be a close relationship between the McCormicks and Delanys even prior to the marriage they frequently appear as godparents to each others children in the parish register for Rolestown. They have 14 children (two of which are stillborn twins). Richard ran Killossery Mill up to about 1901 and when his brother Christopher dies, most of the family moves to 27 North Earl Street (residence and tobacconist shop with billiard room attached). A secondary business of a tobacco stall in Westland Row station was part of the inheritance. The premises are destroyed by fire in 1916 in the Easter Rising and the stall in Westland Row station is looted. They lost all of their possessions and the business. Richard and MaryJane return to Killossery until their deaths in 1919 and 1920 respectively. Mary-Jane dies on 14th June 1920 of senile decay and heart failure at the age of 69 and she is buried in the family plot in Killossery Cemetery. Details of their children and all source material is contained in the Delany Family History and not repeated here.

Margaret McCormick Margaret McCormick was born c. 1854 in Lispopple, Swords. She married Michael Moran of Fosterstown, Swords (born about 1840) on 17th April 1883 in Rolestown Church. The witnesses were John Archbold (local and a cousin of the Delanys) and Margarets sister Teresa. They lived in Fosterstown House and had 5 children: Mary (Q1, 1885); Peter Joseph (Q3 1887); Teresa Mary (Q2 1889); Edward Hugh (Q1 1892); and Agnes (1895). Michael appears on the 1901 census but Maggie describes herself as a widow by 1911 (there is a death in Q2 1902 which looks likely to be Michael). Interestingly, her daughter Teresa is an undergraduate in NUI (this would have been very unusual at the time). In 1927 Margarets youngest daughter Agnes died and shortly afterwards Margaret and son Peter put the land up for sale. Margaret dies in 1933 (to be verified in GRO).

Joseph McCormick Joseph was born about 1856. He joined the civil service and became an officer of Customs and Excise. He was stationed in the Alloa district of Scotland initially and then transferred to Worcester in England. He married Helen Mary Benn Mullan on 27th April 1881 in Alloa, Scotland (one of the witnesses was Laurence his brother). Helens parents were Thomas Mullan, a pawn broker and Margaret Mullan (nee Mitchell). Helen was from Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland originally. They settle into married life in Worcester and two years later their daughter Margaret Mary was born in the summer of 1883.

Figure 6: Alloa Scotland

Figure 7: Carsebridge Distillery, Alloa

Joseph and his family returned to live in Alloa at 41 Church Street. He was stationed at Carsebridge Distillery until his retirement. Joseph was a prominent member of the community. From his obituary (see appendix) we know that he was very involved with the Alloa Parish Council of which he was chair. He was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Clackmannan. He worked on the Library Committee and the Alloa Archaeological Society. He was a prominent member of the local Catholic church; St. Mungos and was Secretary and Treasurer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Helen died in 1930 and Joseph on 14th May 1942. They are buried in Sunnyside Cemetery in Alloa.

Laurence McCormick Laurence was baptised on 12/4/1857 in Rolestown church. One of his sponsors was Joseph Leany (probably Richard Delanys father). Laurence appears to have had a great interest in agriculture as a science and there is an account of him growing tobacco as an experimental crop on his farm in 1887. He married Brigid Smith from Navan on 2nd of June 1890 in the Cathedral in Navan. The witnesses were Christopher Delany (Richards brother) and Roseanna Smith. He owned Rolestown House but sold it in the 1901 census his wife and children are listed as living in Rolestown West (I assume Rolestown House). It appears that he sold Rolestown House and farm in January 1902.

Figure 10: Rolestown House

The couple had 5 children in total but one had passed away by 1901 (there is a granddaughter Agnes who is buried in the family plot this may be the other child). There are 3 children listed in 1901 Helena (Q1 1893), Edward Leo (Q2 1894) and Ethel Mary (Q3 1896). However, Laurence is not living in the family home he is a boarder in a house in Gardiner Place, Dublin and his profession is listed as farmer. For Rolestown West he owns 5 of the 9 properties in the townland.

Figure 11: Navan 1900s

In 1911 another daughter was listed Marie (1892) the four children and the mother now lived at No. 12 Belvedere Avenue, Dublin City. Laurence is still a boarder but is now located in Mallow, Co. Cork and his profession is listed as horticultural instructor. During searches in the National Archives I discovered that Laurence was employed as itinerant instructor in horticulture and BeeKeeping by the Department of Agriculture.

Teresa McCormick Teresa was born about 1858 (perhaps a twin of John below as twins seem to run in the family?). In 1901 she lived in Lispopple (house and land owned by her brother Edward) with her sister Elizabeth. In 1911 she lived with the Cuffe family as a lady help (aged 54). It would appear she never married. She died after a short illness at her sister Brigids home in Dundalk on 9th November 1923.

Annie Mary McCormick Annie was born in Lispopple c. 1859. She married twice firstly to a Mr. Smith, date unknown (check GRO). There doesnt appear to have been any children from this marriage. She married James Stack on 30th April 1895 in Gardiners Street Church Dublin. James was a widower (married Alison Macken in 1884 appears to be a child (Charles Joseph Patrick Q2 1886) from this marriage). Annie and James have 6 children Valentine Edward (Q1 1896); Mabel Mary (Q4 1898); Monica & Norah (twins) (Q4 1899); Stella Marie Q3 1901; and Pamela Frances Q4 1903.

The family lived at 3 Castle Terrace, Main Street, Malahide, Co. Dublin. James (born c. 1851) was the Clerk of Balrothery Union (District Council) and eventually retired after 50 years service about 1924. Annies stepson Charles was at boarding school in 1901 Clongowes Wood in Kildare (very expensive school one of the oldest in Ireland) but was living back in the family Figure 16: Main Street Malahide 1900s home in 1911 and was a medical student.

James makes a will in 1928 the main clauses are: Son Valentine to have 150, his watch and chain, bicycle and any articles of clothing he wants. Daughter Stella to get 125 and the right to a bedroom at 3 Castle Terrace whenever she is out of employment and unmarried and her sisters Nora and Pamela are in occupation. Daughters Nora and Pam 100 each Daughter Mabel (married name Kelly) to get 25 Nora and Pamela to get interest in house and contents shared equally if remain unmarried. If one dies or marries all left to remaining one. In November 1938 James adds a Codicil to his will because Valentine dies. Bequests to daughters to increase as follows; Stella to 200, Nora and Pamela to 150 and Mabel to remain 25. Additions: Daughter Mina (Mrs. Lynch) 100 and Granddaughter Betty Kelly 100 and Pam Kelly 50. (I will request will again in National Archives and copy) James was made Vice-President of Malahide Golf Club in 1937. He appears to be a man of consequence rubbing shoulders with Lord Talbot and other dignitaries. Two years later he died on 20th June 1939.

Edward McCormick Edward was baptised on 11/8/1867 in Rolestown Church. Although the youngest son he appears to have inherited (at least part of the farmland) when Edward senior passed away. His brother Laurence was already established on a farm in Rolestown; his brother Joseph was living and working in England and subsequently Scotland and another brother John died young. He married Mary Ellen Courtney, from Fosterstown, Swords on 15th May 1889 in St. Sylvesters Church Malahide. In 1901 he was living in Lispopple with his wife Mary Ellen and their 4 children: Mary Teresa (Q1 1890), Annie (1892), Edward (Q3 1894), and Joseph (Q3 1897). Edward died young on 7th October 1902. Mary Ellen died on 13th April 1906. I can only find Edward junior in the 1911 census. He is boarding with a family in Phibsboro and working as a carpenter (age 16). Mary Teresa married in 1911 so younger children may have gone to live with her (check GRO for marriage cert to find out married name and then search census).

The property must have been kept in trust for the two boys who inherit it when they come of age, however, they sell it on at a later date. There is a suggestion that one of the girls ended up in England.
