INTRODUCTION On 7th of May 2013, a visit was held for students whose taking Rice Processing (EPF 4706) class as a step to improve the understanding in how paddy is processed as well as to introduce the industry of paddy processing to the students. The visit was held at Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) in Sekinchan. BERNAS is a company that handle the paddy and rice processing in Malaysia where BERNAS and its group of companies are involved in the procurement and processing of paddy, the importation, warehousing, distribution and marketing of rice in Malaysia. Currently, BERNAS controls about 24% of the paddy market and 45% of the local rice demand. BERNAS Group of companies also involved in seed and farming activities, international rice joint venture, as well as rice complementary businesses. Under a Privatisation Agreement signed with Malaysias government in year 1996, BERNAS needs to fulfill the requirement of maintenance of the nation's rice stockpile, acting as the buyer of last resort for paddy farmers, managing the Bumiputera Rice Millers Scheme and the distribution of Paddy Price Subsidies to farmers on behalf of the government. BERNAS MISSION BERNAS aimed to create value by making an increment of market share, establishing new products and exploiting complementary products. BERNAS also aiming to be a market leader in Malaysia. BERNAS will be market driven focusing on the brand building, product performance and also on customer service. BERNAS VISION BERNAS is very committed in sustaining and providing better paddy and rice products to the nation by supplying a good quality products that create value to BERNAS itself, their partners and also to their customers. PROCESSING There are severals processes that BERNAS in Sekinchan handle. The processes involves buying the paddy from suppliers nearby, then proceeds with drying process, hulling or milling process and finally selling of paddy or rice to the consumers. BERNAS will usually buy matured paddy with a moisture content of 17% wet basis. Any immatured paddy bought will cause a lot of problems during later processes, that is why BERNAS did not prefer those kind of paddy since immature paddy contains a higher moisture

content as well as higher weight which then will also reduced the profit of BERNAS. This is because they had to pay more for a heavier weight of paddy that supposed not to be so, as well they need to spend more on processing the immature paddy. The paddy bought will then be further processed. Firstly, the paddy will be dried where the 17% moisture content of paddy will be reduced to 14% moisture content. The drying process usually takes about 20 hours to dried up to desired moisture content. After the drying process, the dried paddy is proceeded to hulling or milling process where the husks of paddy are removed. But before that, particles, debris and other foreign materials are removed first by using screening process since all these materials act as disturbance for milling process. Finally, the finished product which is dried and milled paddy will be distributed and sold to any consumers that demand for it. CONCLUSION The visit to BERNAS is very informative and usefull to students since student can now know the real processes and equipment used for the processes instead of just imagining it during the class.
