What kind of organization is Big Brother Big Sisters? What are the aims of this organization? Do you agree/disagree the idea expressed by the organization? Do you consider that welfare or charity organizations are useful nowadays? Why? Give reasons for your opinion. Can you name some charity organizations from our country? Interaction: pair work, lock step Timing: 5 minutes Activity 2: Aim: To express opinion about charitable organizations, defining their role in society, aims and activities delivered; To identify the main role of charitable organizations in modern society; Procedure: Students are asked to open their books at page 77 and to describe some logos of some British charitable organizations and guess what each one does (Age Concern, Friends of the Earth, BBC Children in Need, Born free, RNIB, and British Red Cross)

Students should describe the pictures, read the names and try to deduce the purpose of these organizations What are the aims of these organizations? What kinds of activities are provided by.? Are they useful? Do we have something like this in our countries? What do they do? How important is their work? Would you like to work for a charitable organization? What will be the main activity? Support your idea with arguments. Students are asked to complete some extracts for each charitable organizations mission statement and check their predictions related with each of them. Interaction: individual work, lock step Timing: 15 minutes Activity 3: Aim: To spot the weak and strong points of this kind of organization; To design a logo for a new local organization; To write a report making suggestions for improving the actions of some organizations Procedure: Students are split into five groups, each group has to complete a different task related with an organization: 1 st group: propose some activities and objectives for Age Concern (what are the aims, what activities or legal advice are provided by the organization); 2 nd group: deliver a speech connected to BBC Children in Need. You should present your organization, aims, and activities and try to convince people it is necessary to support your activities and maybe sponsored your organization. 3 rd group: write a report concerning the activity provided by Friends of the Earth and give suggestions to improve the activity and results 4th group: find strong and weak points for charitable organizations (why are they necessary but they are not always useful and visible where they are supposed to be) 5 th group: design a picture for a new organization you consider it is necessary in our area. It should be attractive and related to your title and mission. Each team chooses a leader to present their work. Students can correct and give suggestions. Interaction: Group work Timing: 30 minutes
