COURSEWORK

Title: Analysis of strategy of Transnational Corporation (TNC) operating in Vietnam


A. Aims of the coursework
- To give students the opportunity to study, assess and understand the international decisions faced by and facing major international firms in the global economy. - To enable the students to apply the knowledge gained in the lectures to a practical real world situation. - To develop students research and information gathering skills. - To enable students to work productively within group situations. B. Working within small groups of 3-4 students each group will focus on a specific Transnational Corporation that they themselves select. The TNC must be selected from those operating in Vietnam. Note that the choice of a specific TNC is subject to final approval by the lecturer. Once selected, the student group is charged with conducting a detailed research assessment of the chosen TNC with respect to its international activities in order to understand the international decisions and strategies to that organization. The coursework will outline all the firms international activities, but should focus on Vietnamese market. The coursework will comprise of the contents addressed in the lectures, which can be divided into three broad areas of concern as follows: Part 1: An introduction: Background to TNCs road to Internationalization 1. A brief history of the TNC. 2. Its major sectors of operation (its major products/services offered, the nature of the industry it operates within. 3. Results of its business activities (at least 3 years worth of data needed). 4. An analysis of the choice of foreign markets. Part 2: Business strategies of the TNC in Vietnam 1. External analysis a. Macro-environment analysis (focusing on PEST analysis). b. Industry analysis 2. Analysis of strategic issues of TNC in Vietnam a. International strategies of TNC in Vietnam (Standardization or adaptation). b. Business strategies of TNC in Vietnam i. Corporate-level strategy ii. Business-level strategy c. Organizational structure of TNC in Vietnam d. Modes of market entry. 1

e. Performance (financial, market share. at least 3 years worth of data needed). Part 3: Conclusion and recommendation A clear and concise set of logical arguments based on your critical analysis of the situation. In accordance with the issues raised in the conclusions, a detailed list of all points of concerned that need to be addressed to improve the TNCs own competitive position in the Vietnam market.

C. Requirements
1. Oral presentation: All of the above areas must be covered during the formal oral presentation. All group members will be required to present the findings of their coursework to the class via a 15 minutes oral and visual presentation which will be followed by a question and answer (Q&A) session. 2. Written report: covering all areas of the oral presentation. 3. Assessment method: - Coursework: - Oral presentation 15% - Written presentation 25% - Final examination: 50% 4. Coursework assessment structure (written report): - Structure: report format, reference and presentation 10% - Research: use of journals, textbooks and web access 30% - Analysis: use of frameworks to analyze the materials 20% - Discussion: critical discussion with appropriate level of description 30% - Conclusion/summary/recommendations: main themes with justification 10% 5. Deadlines: - Group will submit the name of the TNC and group members no later than 24:00 16/4/2013 - The report to be delivered no later than 24/5/2013 - The oral presentations would be on 30/5, 3 & 6/6/2013 (to be confirmed). 6. Others: - The report will last for 7,000 to 8,000 words (excluding appendix). - Use of fragments and paragraphs from text books with paraphrasing or referencing them clearly. - Use of data from company or other sources with providing adequate references. - It is forbidden to copy other course members work and reports. - In all cases where plagiarism is attempted, 0% coursework mark will be awarded.
