The mayor and three council
members took their Oath of Office
at the May 7th meeting of the
Faith City Council.
Following the approval of min-
utes and claims, Mayor Haines
closed out the old years business
with quotes for cement work. Bob
Linn submitted a quote of $4100
for several areas that needed ce-
ment repair or replacement.
Work will be done on a patch at
the bar, curb at community cen-
ter, dip at the sale barn, dip at
Greg Fishers, and a slab at the
airport. Council accepted Linns
quote.
Mayor Haines, Jerry Spencer,
Ward 1 and Karen Inghram,
Ward 2 were sworn in for another
term, and Barb Berndt, Ward 3,
was sworn in as the Ward 2 coun-
cilperson.
New business consisted of elec-
tion of officers, designating depos-
itories and official newspaper.
Karen Inghram was elected pres-
ident of the council and Jerry
Spencer was elected vice presi-
dent. 1st National Bank and
Dakota Plains were designated
their official depositories and the
Faith Independent the official
newspaper.
According to state laws, council
members can fill-in on positions,
earning up to $5,000, meaning
that Barb Berndt can continue as
a part-time bartender.
Council retired into executive
session to discuss personnel.
Council approved hiring Tori
Afdahl as pool manager at $10 hr.
for a maximum of 20 hours a
week, and Alana Gray was ap-
proved at $8.75 hr. as lifeguard
and swimming instructor. The
city will pay for lifeguards to take
the certification class.
Council approved Debbie
Brown to attend the Finance Of-
ficers School in Pierre in June.
The landfill inspector was here
a few weeks ago to look over the
landfill and found an abundance
of old tire. Council will be getting
quotes for the disposal of tires at
the landfill.
The water tower is to be re-
paired after school is out. Council
will advertise for bids for the
work, to be opened at the second
meeting in June.
Mayor Haines thought they
should wait until mid-June to see
if we get any rain before advertis-
ing for haying bids. Council was
in full agreement.
Council agreed to proclaim
May 19-25 as EMS Week.
The GFP put in two car gates
at Durkee Lake in the past but
doesnt maintain them. Mayor
Haines thought the City should
take them out and replace them
with something else. Council ap-
proved the city boys to do the
work of replacing with railroad
ties.
The city and school met earlier
to discuss the safe room grant and
how the $202,000 balance would
be split between the two entities.
Council retired into executive ses-
sion at this time to discuss the
contractual agreement. Mayor
Haines, Jerry Spencer and Di-
anne Hellekson were named to a
committee to meet with the school
board. Council agreed to pay
$100,000 of the amount. Once the
building is completed the city will
turn it over to the school and will
no longer be responsible for the
building. The building will be
available for a tornado shelter by
the community.

Addie Boyd Weyer, 92, died on
Sunday, May 5, 2013, at her
home in Sturgis.
Funeral services were held
Monday, May 13, 2013, at the
First Wesleyan Church in Sturgis
with Pastor Harold Delbridge and
Pastor Dan Ziebarth officiating.
Burial followed at Bear Butte
Cemetery.
Addie Boyd was born to Ray
and Mallie (Isaacs) Howie in
Sturgis on August 2, 1920. She
went through elementary school
in a small country school, and
went to high school in Omaha,
Faith, and Sturgis. After she com-
pleted high school, she went to
Spearfish and received a two year
teaching certificate. Addie Boyd
met Merle L. Weyer, and they
were married on August 29, 1941.
She began teaching in 1940, at
Barada and taught there until
1942, from there she taught at
White Owl from 1943 to 1944,
then she went to Winchell in
1958, and moved on to Pershing
from 1959 to 1966, she then
taught at Faith from 1966 to
1973, and moved to kindergarten-
united in 1973, Addie Boyd then
went back to Faith from 1975 to
1987. She had taught country
school for a total of 12 years, and
fourth grade in Faith for 20 years.
Every three years she renewed
her teaching certificate. On Octo-
ber 3, 2003, Addie Boyd was in-
ducted into the Honored Women
Educators of South Dakota in
Pierre.
She lived most of her life at
Marcus until 1997, when she
moved to Sturgis. She was a
member of the Presbyterian
Church and the SDEA. She en-
joyed researching the genealogy
of her family, gardening, crochet-
ing, and reading. She cherished
her yard, her flowers, watching
birds, rodeos, dancing, and spend-
ing time with her family.
Addie Boyd is survived by her
daughters, Mary Lee (Jesse)
Marty, and Merla Dawn (Alan)
Price; son, Harley (Connie)
Weyer; son-in-law, Terry (Va-

Gov. Dennis Daugaard has
signed a proclamation declaring
May as National Military Appre-
ciation Month.
May is a time to recognize the
sacrifices and successes of those
who have served in the Armed
Forces, both past and present.
The vigilance of the members
of the Armed Forces has been in-
strumental to the preservation of
freedom, security and prosperity
enjoyed by the people of this great
nation, the Governors proclama-
tion states. The success of the
Armed Forces depends on the
dedicated service of its members
and their families.
National Military Appreciation
Month includes: Loyalty Day
(5/1), Victory in Europe Day (5/8),
Military Spouse Appreciation
Day (5/11), Armed Forces Day
(5/18), and Memorial Day (5/27).
Each of those days provides an
opportunity to learn more about
military members and the fami-
lies that support them.
Dear Editor:
After an unsuccessful trip to
Sturgis yesterday with the man-
agement of Lemmon Arrow Tran-
sit to present a case for
continuation for bus service from
FAITH to RAPID CITY, I was in-
formed there may be other ways
to support said service without
government funding.
I have been riding Arrow Tran-
sit for about four years now,
(theyve serviced FAITH for much
longer), and I never heard of a
radio fund raiser as they have lo-
cally in LEMMON.
It is not an excessive amount
that the company requests, and
service can still be obtained at
Meadow Junction to the north for
FAITH. Still it might be interest-
ing to see how much money could
be raised by FAITH, who the
county commissioner stated could
be supportive in regards to fund-
ing, just by forwarding donations
to the company office in LEM-
MON.
I dont think the people here
truly realize the opportunity they
have to utilize Arrows vehicles on
their twice-monthly basis.
Thank you,
Wayne Wilson
May is National Military Appreciation Month
This month is dedicated to all
of our military men and women
and their families, and it also pro-
vides an opportunity to educate
our youth on the historical impor-
tance of the Armed Forces, said
Maj. Gen. General Timothy
Reisch, Secretary of the South
Dakota Department of the Mili-
tary and Adjutant General of the
South Dakota National Guard.
Our veterans and their families
have contributed so much to pro-
tect the freedoms we all enjoy.

Debbie explained the rug situ-
ation at the bar. The rugs they
have behind the bar now have the
holes in them, making it harder
to clean them. Cindy likes to be
able to wash them down. They
can purchase others for about
$1,000, which is less than they
currently rent them for, and they
would be easier to clean. Council
approved replacing the current
ones.
Debbie explained that Dick
Butler sold his hangar at the air-
port to Denny Topf and the lease
with the City needs to be trans-
ferred to his name. Members ap-
proved this transfer.
Debbie informed Council that
the Girls Scouts had planted trees
at the small park by the mu-
seum/information center and
were wondering if a fence could be
put up to protect the trees. Debbie
said she thought the trees were
tall enough now that they should-
nt get damaged. It would be
harder to mow the area if a fence
was put up. Council decided not
to put up the fence. The school do-
nated their old playground
equiptment for the park, and the
Girls Scouts will also be putting
in a gazebo this summer. The
cowboy statue on the corner of
Main and 212 will also be moved
to this area.
Council retired into executive
session for legal matters at 8:15.
Their next meeting is May
14th.

Memorial Day was born of
compassion and empathy for
those who courageously gave
their lives to safeguard us and
our way of life.
Let us all pause this Memorial
Day to remember great and brave
Americans to recognize their
valor and applaud the blessings
their bravery has secured.
Throughout our nations his-
tory, the freedoms we enjoy have
been won and protected by an
elite group who understand the
greatest and most selfless love.
The men and women of our
armed forces risk the ultimate
sacrifice to protect fellow Ameri-
cans and citizens of the world
from tyranny and oppression.
Every time they put on the uni-
form, these heroes renew their
commitment to pay any price, to
bear any burden, so that we
might be free.
Our records reflect South
Dakota military casualties by
wartime period were: World War
I 1,017; World War II 1,599;
Korean 186; Vietnam 210; and
Gulf War 37.
Let us all pause this Memorial
Day to reflect on these men and
women of selfless devotion. Let
us all be reminded that the free-
dom we enjoy comes at a tremen-
dous price. Veterans service
organizations and community
leaders throughout this great
state host hundreds of Memorial
Day services. Let us all attend
one of these programs and show
respect to those that gave all, and
those that served and those that
are serving in Harms Way.
In the words of Lee Greenwood:
And I'm proud to be an Ameri-
can, where at least I know I'm
free. And I won't forget the men
who died, who gave that right to
me.
At the South Dakota Depart-
ment of Veterans Affairs, we em-
brace the meaning of these words,
and on this Memorial Day we not
only remember our fallen heroes
and their families, but we recom-
mit ourselves to be the voice for
South Dakotas 74,000 veterans
living, working and contributing
to our society today. As always,
veterans are encouraged to visit
our website (http://mva.sd.gov/de-
fault.html) or visit their local
County or Tribal Veterans Serv-
ice Officer.

Larry Zimmerman
SD Secretary of Veterans Affairs As the saying goes, "April
showers bring May flowers." But
what does April snow bring? In
the case of spring 2013 in South
Dakota, much needed moisture
and some relief from drought,
says Laura Edwards, SDSU Ex-
tension Climate Field Specialist.
"I have a glass half-full per-
spective and think that the un-
ending winter has really helped
to improve soil moisture for the
growing season," Edwards said.
"Snow and cool temperatures in
April can reduce moisture lost to
runoff, and more of the snowmelt
went into replenishing the dry
soils from the fall. Flooding is
very limited and localized, which
tells me that most of the
snowmelt was able to infiltrate
the soils."
She points to the U.S. Drought
Monitor, which has shown grad-
ual improvements in nearly every
corner of the state, with the ex-
ception of north central counties
from Perkins to Campbell and
Walworth Counties.
"These areas have held steady
with some degradations in condi-
tions last month. Things have
been looking up for most of the
cropping areas, and the water
supply in the Black Hills in
April," Edwards said. "The U.S.
Drought Monitor map has shown
at least one category improve-
ment, reflecting the moisture and
cool temperatures that helped
keep the moisture in the ground."
The National Weather Service
offices in South Dakota have re-
ported that in April numerous
record cold temperatures were set
- in addition to snowfall and pre-
cipitation records.
"Fifteen climate sites in west-
ern South Dakota ranked in the
top 10 coldest Aprils on record,"
she said. "Interior tied its coldest
April ever with an average tem-
perature of 42.3 degrees F."
Edwards adds that the com-
bined months of March and April
2013 were among the coldest on
record.
"Several locations in the east-
ern side of the state went from
the warmest spring on record in
2012 to the coldest in 2013," she
said.
According to data, Huron went
from its warmest March and
April on record in 2012, to the
fifth coldest in 2013. Last year,
Sioux Falls was second warmest
on record, and this year tied for
fifth coldest March and April. In
the northeast, Aberdeen, Water-
town, Sisseton and Wheaton all
recorded their coldest March and
April combination on record.
"Watertown even edged out a
record set back in 1899 with an
average temperature of 26.8 de-
grees F over the two-month pe-
riod," Edwards said.
Eighteen climate sites in west-
ern South Dakota ranked in the
top 10 snowiest Aprils. Rapid City
set a new April total snowfall
record with 43.1", while establish-
ing several daily records along
the way. Interior also set a new
April snowfall record with 32.5".
"They also recorded the high-
est monthly snowfall for any
month at these two locations," she
said.
Edwards adds that South
Dakotans can still expect May
flowers after April snow.
"Signs of spring are starting to
appear as bulbs and some tree
buds are already emerging in
backyard gardens following the
brief warm weekend on April 27-
28," Edwards said.
She adds that the cooler than
average conditions will carry into
early May, but should turn to a
warmer weather pattern by mid-
month. In the early part of May,
increased chances of wetter than
average conditions are projected
for the southeastern corner of the
state, but then a drier pattern
will settle in after a week or so.
"The forecast for the first week
of the month is certainly more
winter-like, as snow fell on May 1
in the southeast, but now that it
has melted the soils can warm up
quickly as soon as the air temper-
atures increase," she said.
Data from the state climate of-
fice weather network shows soil
temperatures in the mid to upper-
40s degrees F at 4-inch depth
across the southern half of South
Dakota. In the north, 4-inch deep
soil temperatures range from 40
to 50 degrees F. At 2- inches deep,
soil temperatures are hovering
around 45 to 50 degrees F in most
areas. Edwards says soil temper-
atures have fallen a bit the last
few days, but can quickly turn
around this time of year, so corn
and soybean planting is on the
verge of moving full speed ahead.
South Dakota soil tempera-
tures can be found here: http://cli-
mate.sdstate.edu/awdn/maps/soil
maps.asp?parameter=s010.

Due to cold weather that has
caused a delayed planting season,
Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed
an Executive Order to allow over-
width fertilizer application vehi-
cles to travel during nighttime
hours in South Dakota.
The Executive Order provides
permission to move over-width
fertilizer application vehicles not
exceeding 12-feet-wide during
nighttime hours under terms of
the annual permit. The order ex-
pires May 31.
Over-width vehicles must be
equipped with flashing or rotat-
ing white or amber warning
lights on each side of the loads
widest extremity. The warning
lights must be clearly visible to
motorists approaching from the
front and rear.
Although hours of travel for
over-width fertilizer application
vehicles have been temporarily
extended by the Governor, sev-
eral highways in the state have
weight restrictions in place be-
cause of unstable conditions. No
vehicle is authorized to exceed the
recommended weight posting of
any road.
For information on permits,
contact a South Dakota Depart-
ment of Public Safety at 800-637-

Summer-like temperatures
greeted Central Meade County
this past weekend. Many of the
trees are still leafless, however
bushes have leafed out and green
grass has emerged. The sights
and smells of spring are wonder-
ful, but we are still in much need
of rain.
Several were able to get out
and enjoy the nice weather and
getting together at Rural Neigh-
bors last week.
Friday, May 10, was the LMC
Conference Track Meet, which
the Faith High School is a part of.
Caden Smiley was named Out-
standing Male Athlete of the Con-
ference. He placed first in the 100
meter dash, high jump, the 4x100
m relay, and was second in the
200m dash. Reggie Rhoden took
first in the 100m hurdles, 2nd in
high jump, and 4th in triple jump.
Paige Brink placed 4th in long
jump and Chaney Keffeler placed
in the 400 m and some relays.
This Thursday, May 16, is the Re-
gional Track Meet and we wish
them all the best as they try to
qualify for the State Track Meet.
Friday night was a night for
about 20 ladies to get together to
celebrate the upcoming marriage
of Yvonne Mahaffy Cammack and
Bob Barry. The party was held at
Deb Schnells, and Amy Cammack
provided many wonderful hors
doeuvre. Sandy Rhoden and Deb
Schnell recited a poem written
just for the couple and provided
activities that included a 'Danc-
ing with the Stars' competition.
The winning team was made up
of Melanie Cammack, Stacy
(Barry) Hunt, Deb Schnell, and
Jeannie Cammack. The evening
ended with gift opening, sharing
of funny stories and visiting.
Many pictures are being
posted on Facebook of brandings
in the area. Casey and Francie
Brink held their branding on Sat-
urday which turned out to be a
beautiful day.
On Sunday, the mothers at-
tending church services at Union
Center were presented with a
beautiful rose and were recog-
nized at the front of the church.
Also being honored that day were
seniors, Paige Brink, Reggie Rho-
den, and Caden Smiley who will
graduate from Faith High School.
On Sunday, May 19, gradua-
tion ceremonies will be held in
Sturgis at 2:00 pm. Collin Wilcox
will graduate from Sturgis High
School. That same day, May 19,
will be Faith's graduation at 3:00
pm at the Faith Community Cen-
ter. Shanna Moreland will grad-
uate from Sunshine Bible
Academy. We wish these gradu-
ates all the best.
The Community Baptist
Church of Union Center typically
has their Vacation Bible School
during or around the Sturgis Bike
Rally, but, this year VBS will be
held from June 17-21. One may
want to mark it on your calen-
dars. This year's topic is "Jesus Is
Coming Soon!" All children ages 5
and up are welcome.
On Saturday, Melvin Arneson
headed to a junior high rodeo
with their son Tarin, while Trina
headed north with Tanielle for a
high school rodeo. This is rodeo
season and much is going on. So,
for those who have results to
share in the Central Meade
County News, please send to lrho-
den@gwtc.net and label 'news'.
We would love to see them.
Because of the drought-like
conditions, several ranchers are
selling their yearlings instead of
summering them. The lack of
grass and water situations are
forcing some to cut back on their
herds this summer. For our

praying for rain this week.

It remains dry here in Meade
County. We had temperatures in
the 60s-70s last week, and still no
moisture! Its nice to see some
green on the trees; they started
budding out last week and the

process! I see our plum trees is
getting blossoms.

said Thune. When the Corps
flooded land along the river in
order to build the dams on the
Missouri River, they did so under
the agreement that residents
would have access to water from
the Missouri for various purposes.
The Corps new proposed fees for
surplus water usage infringes on
the agreement the Corps made
with residents along the Missouri
to allow them access to water that
is legally and historically theirs.
The Corps actions would have
numerous negative impacts on in-
dividuals, tribes, businesses, and
water systems in South Dakota,
and I hope my colleagues will join
us in supporting this common-
sense amendment to prevent this
power grab.
In September of 2012, Thune
was joined by Senators Kent Con-
rad (D-N.D.), John Hoeven (R-
N.D.), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), and
Jon Tester (D-Mont.) in a letter to
the Chairman and Ranking Mem-
ber of the Senate Environment
and Public Works Committee out-
lining their concerns about the
Corps proposal and urged the
committee to schedule an over-
sight hearing on the issue.

Community Legion Hall, Faith, SD
Hope all the moms out there
had a good Mothers Day and got
to enjoy being with family and or
friends. We drove to Faith and ate
buffet at the Branding Iron then
attended the 44th Annual Faith
High School Rodeo. When it said
44th on the cover of the programs
I had to do the math and be sure
they were right about the number
of years. I also came home and
drug out my old FHS annuals to
check out who all was in rodeo
club back then. Some of them I re-
membered and some I had forgot-
ten. The officers were as follows:
President, John Heidler, Vice
President Bruce Humble, Secre-
tary Judy Dittman, and Treas-
urer Linda Walker. Mr. Jerry
Martin was the sponsor at that
time. I never thought to count the
number of members in the photo
but some of those still around the
Faith area that were members
are Wade Derflinger, Charmagne
Price Lightfield, Gary Price, Gary
Palmer, and I. In those days
every high school rodeo club had
a flag for the grand entry and
vests made from their school col-
ors. My mom, Marian Thompson
made our first flag and the vests
that we wore. At that time we
thought we were pretty hot stuff.
Does anyone remember if my
mom had other mothers who
helped her with the vests? Know-
ing Dorothy Heidler, Id guess she
lent a helping hand somewhere.
In looking back in the annual I
also saw that Linda Walker was
the first rodeo queen. Linda was
Amy Schuelkes aunt and Larry
Walkers younger sister. Linda
passed away due to cancer many
years ago. In those days the girls
did not do break away
roping. Then, as now, we had a
wonderful group of family mem-
bers and community members
who were our unpaid help. It
takes a lot of hands to pull off an
activity like a rodeo and much of
it has to be volunteer. Thank
you Faith community for giving of
your time and money so the area
kids can practice, enjoy and learn
the sport of rodeo. No matter how
small your part seemed to you, it
all has to happen to make this
work. Just my opinion but I think
we have better kids because of it
and each of you.
We werent there in time for
me to get all the results and they
were out of programs when we got
there so I had to get one from
someone else but here are a few of
the results: Team Roping first
was Lane Foster and Dalton
Sheridan with a 9.29, second
Tyen Palmer and Jayci Lamphere
10.41 and fourth Kenny
Carmichael and Reed Arneson
13.37. In barrel racing, Jami Der-
flinger ran a 17.682 which I think
put her in third place. Trey Dono-
van and Troy Thompson each at-
tempted a bull ride but were
unsuccessful. According to my
records which could be WRONG,
Katy Miller won the goat tying
with a 6.84, Tearnee Nelson was
third with a 8.12. In Tie Down
Roping, Cody Trainor roped a
12.32 to win it and Cody Bern-
stein was fifth. Tearnee Nelson,
Sierra Price and Jami Derflinger
all were in pole bending but failed
to place. The winning pole bend-
ing time was 20.921. Clay Bern-
stein placed sixth in steer
wrestling. I dont have any break
away roping or bronc riding re-
sults because I didnt have a pro-
gram so I need to apologize for
that. Back in the days when my
daughter, Lacey was showing
horses and rodeoing there was a
4-H horse judge who told the kids,
If youre here today you are a
winner. The only ones who arent
winners are the ones who didnt
come and participate. I truly be-
lieve that man was right. If you
were there and tried you are a
winner! Congratulations Faith
High School Rodeo kids, we are
proud of you!
I heard a lot of conversations
taking place today but I dont
think I heard any that didnt
mention needing rain and how
darn dry we are. The plains have
started to green up but they are
predicting 90 degree weather to-
morrow so the green wont last
long without a good thunderstorm
or soaking rain. Much of the win-
ter wheat is not going to make a
crop even if it rains as the seed ei-
ther rotted in the ground or
started and died from lack of
moisture or froze. If we dont get
moisture there will be a lot of live-
stock being sold too. I dont think
some of our weather reporters are
smart enough to realize that we
dont care if it rains on a Saturday
but they better care if it doesnt
cause the price of their food is
going to go up, up, up!
Lacey, Quirt, and Rio Won-
dercheck were in Philip Friday to
visit Irvin Thompson and intro-
duce him to his latest great
grandson, Rio. Rio took to Irvin
like a duck to water and vice
versa so it was a good visit.
Tuesday found Jim and Vonnie
O'Dea in Philip where they kept
appointments.
Jim and Vonnie O'Dea were
near Belle Fourche Saturday and
watched Michael Deichert in a
rodeo. Later they were in
Spearfish for church where the
seniors were honored. Michael
was one of four to receive a schol-
arship. Then out to supper and
they then spent the night at
daughter, Susans. After break-
fast, O'Deas left for Gillette to
watch granddaughter, Jamie
Schweitzer in a high school rodeo.
Then back to near Spearfish to
visit Jim's brother, Dean O'Dea,
get groceries and come home. It
was a nice Mother's Day!
Disease and personal problems
continue to plague many we know
and love. If youve got a minute
speak to the Lord and ask for Him
to help those in need and to
please bring us rain. We also need
to say thank you for the many
blessings we have in Faith coun-
try.
Wraylee Brown spent from
Thurs. to Mon. with Grandpa
and Grandma Hudson over the
weekend of May 3-6, while here
folks took Winston and Wacey to
participate in the Jr. High Rodeo
at Springfield, SD. The Browns
were overnight guest of Brad and
Tela Hutchison of Burke on the
way to Springfield. Winston and
Wacey both placed in their events
at the rodeo.
Tucker, Bev and Tina Hudson
spent Mothers Day at the Cadil-
lac Ranch watching the Jr. HIgh
Regional Rodeo. Winston and
Wacey Brown were contestants,
and they both qualified with more
points to take to State over Me-
morial Day weekend at the Cadil-
lac Ranch. Jr. Hi rodeo is a point
rodeo like high school, with a Na-
tional Rodeo in Galllup, NM in
June.
Branding took place at Tina
Hudson's on Friday. Those help-
ing were Dean Wink, Cody, Trin-
ity, Harley, and Merle Weyer, De
King, Sarah Gaaskjolen, Brian
Baldwin, Mike and Linda Howie,
Tucker and Bev Hudson.

Weekly Column
Showing appreciation for our
nations military
South Dakota has a proud
legacy of military service, extend-
ing from some of our state's earli-
est days to our current conflicts
around the globe. South
Dakotans of every background
have always answered the call to
defend America from those who
seek to destroy the freedom that
we cherish. I doubt there are
many South Dakotans who do not
have a family member or friend
who has worn one of our nation's
uniforms.
May is National Military Ap-
preciation month, and provides
all of us an opportunity to recog-
nize the role our servicemen and
women play in making America
the greatest country on earth.
Our nation has done remarkable
things throughout its short his-
tory to make the world a better
place abroad and at home. Our
troops have protected our citizens
from foreign and domestic
threats, and fought in the name of
liberty all over the world.
Last month I had the opportu-
nity to welcome home the 927th
Survey and Design team of the
South Dakota National Guard
from a nine month deployment to
Kuwait and Afghanistan. It is al-
ways a privilege to watch our
troops return home to their fami-
lies and their communities. These
servicemen and women represent
some of the best that both South
Dakota and our nation have to
offer, and they make us proud to
call them family, friends, and
neighbors.
Honoring our troops and veter-
ans also includes helping pre-
serve their legacy, history, and
stories. One way that people can
continue to preserve the memo-
ries of our servicemen and women
is through the Veterans History
Project through the Library of
Congress. Interviewing your
friends and family can be a great
way to learn more about their ex-
perience and contributions during
their time serving our country. I
encourage people to visit
http://www.loc.gov/vets for more
information.
I invite all South Dakotans to
join me in not only remembering
those who have fought for our
freedom and liberty, but in mak-
ing a commitment to honor our
living heroes throughout the en-
tire year in our thoughts, prayers,
and actions as they continue to
serve on our behalf.

SDSU Extension announces
the launch of SDSU Extension
Feed and Forage Finder Forum
on Facebook.
"As the drought continues in
South Dakota it has become im-
perative for producers to have as
many feeding options and re-
sources available as possible.
With that in mind SDSU Exten-
sion is launching a Facebook page
where people can interact and ex-
change information about feed
and forage resources," said Kalyn
Waters, SDSU Extension Cow
Calf Field Specialist.
The purpose of the forum is to
provide South Dakota producers
information and resources related
to feed and forage. The Facebook
page will include an area where
people can post if they have hay,
silage, pasture, custom feeding/
care, and commodity feeds avail-
able for purchase. The Facebook
page will make it possible for peo-
ple to exchange information about
feed and pasture options and re-
sources available to South Dakota
producers.
The Facebook page is a result
of GrowingSD talks conducted
throughout the state. "One of the
main concerns from producers
was the lack of feed resources for
their livestock," Shannon Sand
SDSU Extension Livestock Busi-
ness Management Field Special-
ist said.
"There's a real need to create a
way for producers to have more
access to feed and forage re-
sources with people that have
feed to sell or pasture for rent."
Based on producer feedback, a
committee was formed to think of
possible solutions for South
Dakota producers.
"Because of the fact that 51
percent of Americans have a
Facebook account, it became ap-
parent that the creation of a feed
and forage forum on Facebook
has the potential to reach a large
audience," Sand said.

Straw Bale Gardening
We recently saw on Facebook
that someone planted a few veg-
etables in a straw bale. The idea
was interesting so here is some
info if you are inclined to experi-
ment with that type of garden.
Dr. N.L. Mansour of Oregon
State University (retired) did
some research on straw bale cul-
ture. He says straw is an excel-
lent medium for growing veg-
etables. He makes these recom-
mendations for success.
First purchase wheat straw
bales as they have less weed
seeds and generally no perennial
weeds.Soak the bales thoroughly,
they will heat when wet, you may
have to wet them more than once
if weather is warm. After about 5
to 7 days the bales will cool down
and be ready for planting. Some
wheat seeds may sprout but they
can be pulled or ignored as they
dont put on much growth. If
youre lucky the bales may last
two seasons so look for bales with
synthetic twine. Make sure you
place the bales where you want
them to stay as once soaked they
are very heavy to move. Place
them so the twine is horizontal
and the straw vertical which al-
lows for better root penetration.
Place the bales in a single line or
place several together, it all de-
pends on your available space.
This is the ultimate easy raised
bed!
Now get ready to plant. Rough
up the bale surface a bit then put
about three inches of compost or
top soil on top for your seed bed.
What can you grow? Quite a bit!
Salad greens are the easiest and
adapt well to this system but also
cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers
work well. Just experiment and
keep notes on what works and
what doesnt.Be sure to throw a
few flowers in there just for fun
and color.
Probably you wont have suc-
cess with root crops because the
straw would inhibit growth and
they would be hard to harvest.
Corn is also not be recom-
mended.You can transplant into
the straw bale but you will need a
good sharp trowel to dig into the
bale to make a bit of a hole to hold
some soil and the transplant.
Only two tomato plants per bale
and only three pepper plants are
suggested. If you want to make
your bale garden a little more col-
orful plant alyssum on the edges,
sprinkle a few marigolds and nas-
turtiums, Bright Lights Swiss
Chard, Merlot Lettuce, Emerald
Oaks Lettuce and Lemon cucum-
bers spilling over the edges will
add interest and beauty.
Have fun, in this area finding
the bales will be the hardest part
this year. Good Luck! Let me
know if you try it and how it
worked.

touring today. Her loyal fan base
has made her a major draw at
biker rallies and festivals year
after year. Cains third hit album
Highway Prophet (2011) and fol-
low-up acoustic album, Modern
Day Gypsy (2012), feature a dis-
tinct rock sound that has made
her the two-time reigning
Nashville Music City Mayhem
Female Rock Vocalist of the Year.
Her new single, "Nightingale," is
currently featured online at

purchase shortly.
Ole Smoky Tennessee Moon-
shine is an authentic brand with
strong heritage that connects
with the biker community, said
Co-Founder Joe Baker. Working
with Jasmine Cain at some of the
biggest biker events of the year is
something that were very excited
about, and we look forward to pro-
viding her fans and ours with a
true moonshine experience.
An authentic American brand
located in the heart of Ap-
palachia, Ole Smoky Tennessee
Moonshine is built on traditions
rooted deeply in the 200-year-old
art of distilling quality moon-
shine. Founded in 2010, when the
state of Tennessee first legalized
the commercial distillation of
moonshine, the company has
since grown to become the proud
creator of more than 100 local
jobs and a major tourist attrac-
tion in the Great Smoky Moun-
tains.

The South Dakota Department
of Education is kicking off the
Read South Dakota! Summer
Reading Challenge, as schools are
nearing the summer break.
Students who dont practice
reading during the summer
months lose valuable skills and
may start off the next school year
below the level they were previ-
ously at, said Secretary of Edu-
cation Dr. Melody Schopp. Its a
phenomenon that we call sum-
mer slide, and it is especially no-
ticeable with our youngest
readers.
According to Schopp, the Read
South Dakota! Challenge is
unique because it promotes the
reading of engaging material at a
skill level appropriate for each
child, rather than focus on read-
ing a certain number of books.
By entering information about
a childs reading level and inter-
ests into an online tool called
Find a Book, parents and librar-
ians can help children create cus-
tomized reading lists with
challenging titles.
Research shows that students
who are reading at grade-level by
the end of third grade are more
likely to achieve future academic
and career success, Schopp ex-
plained. The state Department of
Education is focusing on helping
young students reach that critical
milestone, she said.

South Dakota! Summer Reading
Challenge and to access the Find

South Dakota Families
Mothers Day is this month.
This, my first letter as your Sec-
retary of Agriculture, Id like to
dedicate in memory of my Mom,
Karen.
Like many mothers in agricul-
ture, my Mom was hard working.
She was a faithful wife and
worked side by side with my Dad
and our family. Her days always
seemed to be longer than ours, up
before us and to bed after us.
Over the years, I remember
many times looking at her
cracked fingers from the chores
often associated with hands-on
dairying. I can still see her wash-
ing and preparing the cows for
milking and humming a tune.
She was tough too. The first time
I remember seeing her take a kick
from a Holstein impressed me. Al-
ways a lady, she rarely shared an
expletive.
It is fitting we celebrate our
mothers in May when new life is
springing up all around us. With-
out you, thered be no us.
The many generations of hard
working mothers and grandmoth-
ers throughout South Dakota
need to be thanked. They truly
are the unsung heroes behind the
generations of men who have also
worked to build our agricultural
economy. The women of our farm
and ranch families play a critical
dual role for the success of their
operations. They not only have
tended to the needs of the house-
hold, but have also been a big
part of the day to day chores, es-
pecially in animal agriculture.
All across our great state,
many operations are a working
partnership between husband
and wife and still a critical part of
their success. This calving season,
the women of agriculture may
have tended to an orphaned calf
or tried to warm up a cold one
that was just pulled from the
mud. Maybe its a mothering in-
stinct, but we know women can be
as good if not better caretakers of
livestock.
This month, lets celebrate the
lives of our mothers and the roles
they play as our unsung heroes of
agriculture. If you can, give them
a hug for the rest of us who wish
we still could.
It is my honor and privilege to
serve as your Secretary of Agri-
culture. As my mother also
taught me, I will work hard for
you and do my best. Have a safe
spring and thank you for your
time.
