Top LLHS seniors inspired by families

By Deborah Fox
News-Bulletin Staff Writer dfox@news-bulletin.com

Los Lunas The top 10 Los Lunas High School seniors attribute their academic success to strong family support and their parents involvement. It motivated them to make their parents proud. A couple of the students come from families where everyone attended good colleges, and they want to follow in their footsteps. Other students received their encouragement in families without higher education. Im the first generation of my family thats actually going to go to college, said Sarahi Boyso. So, even being here is an honor. It just makes me want to strive to be a better person. Her ambition is to become a pediatric cardiologist,

eventually working in Brazil. It might be a surprise to learn that these A students have not been without insecurities and fears. They had to work at building self-confidence by venturing outside their comfort zones to try a sport, some type of art, a class, or by participating in a school club. Its OK to fail, said senior Anna Herrera. If youre not good at it, oh well. At least you tried. Live by no regrets, seems to be their motto. Hannah Torres had never been a cheerleader before high school, but she went for it anyway. When I first tried out, I was so scared, because I didnt know anything, Torres said. Im like really uncoordinated, and I was really clumsy, but I got on the team, and honestly, Ive been on for three years now ... It helps just to go for something. You dont know where it can lead you, and it can lead you to success. She plans to be a plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist. Affirming you can do it, then going for it, propelled

them to where they are now. They were involved in sports, the National Honor Society, student council, school clubs and community service. They built networks of friends as serious about school as they were who support them academically and encourage their secret dreams. You should strive for what you want to do and what makes you happy, rather than just trying to please everybody else, said Herrera. Because at the end of the day, its just you. High school may look like an eternity to incoming freshman students, but the years pass quickly, the seniors said. They stress that making the most of those years is for their own future. Make goals each year, because if you dont make goals, you dont strive for anything, said Leandra Trujillo, a budding journalist. If you find a really good

sity to study geology, but his first commitment is to go on mission to Japan for his church. The seniors said its never too soon to start looking for colleges and taking practice runs at the entry exams. The more the tests are taken, the better the chances of improving your score. They praised Leith Borden, the advanced placement English teacher, who helped with essay writing essential for winning scholarships. Competition with his older brother may have spurred Jordan Ulibarri, but his desire for a career he enjoys is what keeps him going. Doing what you love to do fosters the passion to go the extra mile, he said. You want to do the best you can. Hes enrolled to study aerospace mechanical engineering. Whats the point in doing something you hate? Kinghorn asks. And if its just for the money, youre hearts not into it. Once a week, Cortney Reed has been tutoring an elementary-age girl in math class, and Reed also helps her calculus classmates. This has given her satisfaction and a sense of achievement beyond herself, as well as inspired her decision to be a math teacher. For Mariah Gallegos, becoming a physical therapist is important to her. I have a disabled sister who wasnt suppose to live past the age of 13 or be able to walk, Gallegos said. Physical therapy helped her to learn to walk with support, and helped me through all my running injuries, so I want to give back what people have given to me. For senior Melissa Gamez, having a doctor for a father got her interested in medicine. She wants to study pharmacology, and join the Air Force as an officer. I dont want to jump right into it and not be fully prepared, Gamez said. I want to start college first. Another flock of Los Lunas High School fledglings are about to take flight into the larger world. Every day counts, said Torres. Yesterday, I got stuff from my college about dorms and stuff, and I thought, Wow, its really hitting me that Im graduating.

elective that you enjoy, it motivates you more for school. Talking to someone when you feel youre in over your head was very important to Sarahi Boyso, who was overwhelmed by an advanced physics course. I was stressing about it, Boyso said. It was really helpful to talk to my mom. Her mother called the principal who talked to Boysos teacher. He believed in me that I could make it, she said. And I passed that class with an A. Boyso beams. Never be afraid to ask for help, said Aubrianna Kinghorn. Dont be afraid to ask during lunch, before school, after school go get help. Helping people, especially children, is Kinghorns passion. Shes not sure what shell major in at college yet, but shes excited to start school next fall at Brigham Young University, she said. Theres probably other kids who are having the same problem, said Sam Martin, state winner of Googles sixth annual Doodle 4 Google art competition. If you ask, youll probably help others, too.
