Introduction and basic concepts

Radio: a device that intentionally transmits or receives signals in the radio

frequency (RF) part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Father of the technology, is Guglielmo Marconi, who patented in UK (1897)

how radio waves discovered by Hertz could be used for wireless
communications.

The revolution in the microelectronics and computer technology cut the costs
of cellular infrastructure systems to less than 1 percent of what they were 10
years ago.

Therefore high-speed analog-to-digital conversion chips can simoultaneously

make use of hundreds of megahertz of RF spectrum and are set to change
wireless communications

The concept of the ‘cognitive’ radio was originated by Defense Advance

Research Products Agency (DARPA) scientist, Dr. Joseph Mitola, and is the
‘next step up’ for software defined-radios that are emerging today, primarily
in military applications.

Software defined Radio (SDR)

Software radio is the art and science of building radios using software.

A software radio is a radio whose channel modulation waveforms are defined

in software. That is, waveforms are generated as sampled digital signals,
converted from digital to analog via a wideband DAC and converted from to
RF. The receiver, similarly, employs a wideband Analog to Digital Converter
(ADC) that captures all of the channels of the software radio node. The
receiver then extracts and demodulates the channel waveform using software
on a general purpose processor.

The idea is getting the software closer to the antenna as possible, in order to
turn hardware problems in software problems.

Benefits:
SDR Devices can be reconfigured or simply upgraded “on-the-fly”
We can build new kinds of radio that have never before existed

Cognitive Radio (CR)

A CR is a SDR with a “cognitive engine” brain that sense the RF

“scene”,discovers and use surrounding networks to the best advantage while
avoiding interference from other radios to spectrum environment.

Conceptually, the cognitive engine obeys to the operator’s commands by

configuring the radio for whatever combinations of waveform, protocol,
operating frequency, and networking are required.

It monitors its own performance continuously, reading the radio’s outputs to

determine the RF environment, channel conditions, link performance, etc.,
and adjusting the radio’s settings to deliver the needed quality of service
subject to an appropriate combination of user requirements, operational
limitations, and regulatory constraints

Why Cognitive Radio

The RF spectrum is becoming weak.

Using CR, economic benefits can be generated to both telecom operators

and customers through the reuse of the unused or underutilized spectrum.

A cognitive radio will find the right and most efficient way to get the
message across .

Current emergency services rely much on the public networks. This is not
reliable in emergency situations, where the public networks can get
overloaded. A cognitive radio solves this problem.

Imagine devices learning from interaction with their users and acting in
their best interest. I.E. sending a 10 MB email in a zone where carrier
charges are high might cause the CR to alert its user, and suggest waiting
until getting to the office to use the LAN instead.
