One World Human Evolution

In the past evolution has taken many centuries or millennium to cause changes in gene pools; however, recently in time there is evidence of an increase in the rate of evolution (i.e.: less time for species to change). This project is broken into three parts. First, discuss how humans have evolved physiologically you can focus on 3 specific features that have changed. Secondly, explain the 3 features of the human body that you feel are most likely to change in the future. The third part of the project is for you to predict and justify how humans will evolve 2000 years into the future. Evolutionary change is usually stimulated by environmental changes. In such case, you can explain what environmental changes you predict in the future and how you feel they will affect humans as a species. To make things interesting, you can also consider technological changes that could affect humans as a species.
Your Task: Created a picture book illustrating and explaining evolutionary changes in our species. (Think of this as an illustrated essay.) 1. Section 1: 1 page of the book needs to look back at where weve come from in our human evolution. 2. Section 2: 1 page of the book explains current evolutionary features you are going to focus on for your prediction (3 features). 3. Section 3: At least 3 more illustrated pages showing the evolutionary changes of our species in long-term projections (1000, and 2000 years into the future). At least one page for each trait but if you wish to take more than one page, you are welcome. You dont have to be an artist. You just have to illustrate your meaning clearly and it MUST match with the evolutionary features you are discussing in the text. a. Please make sure the following is in the text of your book along with the illustration: i. How the application of science has affected evolutionary rate changes in our species. What scientific achievements are allowing us to be more successful in our environment? What technological advances are changing us? What environmental changes are prompting this change (technology can be considered part of the environment in this case)? ii. What are the benefits and limitations of these changes? iii. Discuss the implications of these changes that are environmental/cultural/economic etc. (choose 2 as per One World req.) iv. Projections (1000 and 2000 years) 1. Justify why you are predicting these changes. It must be reasoned out. You cannot say simply that the changes occur without explaining why they will need to occur and how they will develop (environment or technology) v. Consistently focus on the features you chose in part 2.

Criteria A: One World- Students should understand the interdependence of science and society. Students are expected to discuss how science is
applied and used to solve specific problems in life and society. Students should be given the opportunity to explore local and global scientific issues and evaluate the interaction between science and scientific developments with social, economic, political, environmental, cultural and ethical factors.

1-2 Identify one local/global environmental or technological change that our species will respond to. States one benefit of the evolutionary changes in the past and in the future. States one limitation of the evolutionary changes predicted. The student explains how evolution is applied to addressing the issue of change somewhere in the book.

3-4 Identified and attempts to describe two local/global environmental or technological change that our species will respond to. Identifies or explains a benefit for each evolutionary change in the past and in the future. Identifies and explain a limitation for each evolutionary change predicted. The student has explains how evolution is applied to addressing the issue of change for some of the features over 2000 years.

5-6 Identifies, describes, and explains three local/global environmental or technological change that our species will respond to. Describes and explains a benefit for each evolutionary change in the past and in the future. Identifies, explains and describes a limitation for each evolutionary change predicted. The student explains how evolution is applied to addressing the issue of change for three features over 2000 years.

Criteria B: Communication- Students should be able to demonstrate understanding when communicating scientific information. Students should
use appropriate scientific language, a range of communication modes and the most appropriate communication format. Suitable assessment tasks to assess this criterion include scientific investigation reports, research essays, case studies, interdisciplinary projects, and media presentations. Depending on the tasks, students will be expected to acknowledge the sources of information and document these appropriately.

The student presents few features appropriately using symbolic and/or visual representation accurately according to the task. The student acknowledges sources of information appropriately with intext citations; and with at least 1-2 reputable sources used and submitted in a Works Cited List.

The student presents most features appropriately using symbolic and/or visual representation accurately according to the task. The student acknowledges sources of information appropriately with in-text citations; and with at least 3 reputable sources used and submitted in a Works Cited List.

5-6 The student communicates scientific information effectively using evolution terminology correctly. The student presents all features appropriately using symbolic and/or visual representation accurately according to the task. The student acknowledges sources of information appropriately with in-text citations; and with at least 4 reputable sources used and submitted in a Works Cited List.

Some helpful terminology:

Describe: to give a detailed account. Discuss: to give an account including, where possible, a range of arguments for and against the relative importance of various factors and comparisons of alternative hypotheses. Evaluate: to assess the implications and limitations. Explain: to give a clear account, including causes and reasons or mechanisms. State: to give a specific name, value or other brief answer without explanation or calculation.
