Shaping the Religious Right

(Fo xNews link) Drs. Tim and Beverly LaHaye are leading Christian vo ices in Washing to n, D.C. They present an evang elical viewpo int, yet value so mething very different than mo st evang elicals. Tim is a 33rd deg ree Freemaso n, he's o n the Co uncil fo r Natio nal Po licy, o fficer o f the Co alitio n fo r Relig io us Freedo m, a Reco nstructio nist (believes in Do minio n Theo lo g y), and a big pro mo ter o f the pre-tribulatio n rapture. Many co nservative Christians, like the LaHaye's, advo cate theo cratic principles in a quest to co nquer America, co nvinced that the United States was fo unded as a Christian natio n and (no w) needs to return to her Christian heritag e. It all seems harmless eno ug h, but the theo cratic mo vement is based in a belief that Old Testament laws sho uld apply to America g o vernance. This hig hly po liticized co ncept o f do minio nism is based o n the Bible's text in Genesis 1:26: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Many Christians read this text and co nclude that Go d has appo inted them stewards and caretakers o f Earth. So me Christians read the text and believe, "that Christians alo ne are Biblically mandated to o ccupy all secular institutio ns until Christ returns--and there is no co nsensus o n when that mig ht be." That, in a nutshell, is the idea o f "do minio nism."[1] The pro blem co mes when many o f the o rg anizatio ns ado pt Fascist philo so phy in implementing their ideas. This Fascist leaning can be seen in the membership o f the Co uncil fo r Natio nal Po licy and many o f the co nservative elitists. T heo cracy Theo cracy is derived fro m the two Greek wo rds Qeo /j(Theo s) meaning "Go d" and kra/tein (cratein) meaning "to rule." The Reverend Ro d Parsley, a champio n o f theo cracy, o r what he calls a "christo cracy," to ld his co ng reg atio n at the Wo rld Harvest Church, lo cated just o utside Co lumbus, Ohio , "Theo cracy means Go d is in co ntro l, and yo u are no t." The theo cratic rig ht seeks to establish do minio n, o r co ntro l o ver so ciety in the name o f Go d. The late Rev. D. James Kennedy, fo rmer pasto r o f Co ral Ridg e Ministries, called o n his fo llo wers to exercise "g o dly do minio n ... o ver every aspect ... o f human so ciety." At a "Reclaiming America fo r Christ" co nference in February, 2005, Kennedy said: "Our jo b is to reclaim America fo r Christ, whatever the co st. As the vice reg ents o f Go d, we are to exercise g o dly do minio n and influence o ver o ur neig hbo rho o ds, o ur scho o ls, o ur g o vernment, o ur literature and arts, o ur spo rts arenas, o ur entertainment media, o ur news media, o ur scientific endeavo rs -- in sho rt, o ver every aspect and institutio n o f human so ciety." a small g ro up o f Republican strateg ists targ eted fundamentalist, Penteco stal and charismatic churches to expand the base o f the Republican Party. It is abo ut the manipulatio n o f peo ple o f a certain faith fo r po litical po wer. It is abo ut the rise o f do minio nists in the U.S. federal g o vernment. Today's hard right seeks total dominion. It's packing the courts and rigging the rules. The target is not the Democrats but democracy itself. Acco rding to acclaimed jo urnalist and televisio n ho st Bill Mo yers, "...The co untry is no t yet a theo cracy but the Republican Party is, and they are driving American po litics, using Go d as a a battering ram o n almo st every issue..." (2) I kno w that Bill Mo yer is a So cialist, but he's rig ht! There are a lo t o f pro g ressive alarmists who feel that the Christians are g o ing to take o ver and sho ve Jesus do wn their thro ats. There is plenty o f this writing o n the Internet. I do n't think this will happen, but I do want peo ple to be aware that there is an ag enda being carried fo rth. It all so unds quite Christian o n the exterio r, but we must lo o k at the mo tivatio n o f the banner carrier - even if they say they are a Christian co nservative.
