RESUME GUIDELINES

The following are guidelines so that you can create a resume that you will be able to use for the rest of your college career. The goal of the resume is to get you the interview, for that sough after job, or in your case internships or coops. The resume acts as your letter of introduction and so it is important that it be error free. When you do your resume, you should give it to a couple of people to check for any errors. Also it should be an up to date accounting of your accomplishments and any other thing that distinguishes you. Below you will find some tips, suggestions and a sample resume to get you started. Resumes should be ONE page long if you have a Bachelors degree or less, 2 pages if you have a Masters Degree or PhD. Do NOT use the Microsoft Word templates, there are only about 10 and everyone knows them, plus at this stage you should be able to type up a simple document without the aid of the template. Also, if you need to edit it at a future date, it is simpler is you do not use a template. TIPS Your name should be your complete professional name. This is the name you want to use for the rest of your professional life. For the ladies, remember that if you change your name during your lifetime, your coworkers or network might not recognize your name, so hyphenating your last name or keeping your maiden name as your professional name might be an option you could consider. o The name should be at least 14 point font. Your contact information should be up-to-date and should never be your current jobs address. This is your own personal address. o Your email should be your calstate email, or if not a student it should be a professional sounding email, such as smith_joseph@yahoo.com or e_ruiz@gmail.com and it should NEVER EVER be something like pollito@hotmail.com or sexy_134@bitternet.com. This is the email your

are sending prospective employers, and they will notice any lack of professionalism. The objective is what you want, keep it realistic and specific to the position you are applying for. Education, this is a backward chronological listing of ALL the schools you have attended. It should start with California State University Los Angeles (CSULA). o Do not use acronyms unless you have already spelled them out (see previous example). o Put any community college and then high school. If you have a good GPA for ALL schools attended, list them. If not, skip it. o Remember, once you graduate college, you do not list your high school anymore. Skills and abilities: List any that are relevant to the job Experience: Using a backward chronological order, list all jobs and some of the responsibilities you had at the job. o If you have had a lot of jobs, list the most recent ones Professional or Student organizations: List all the ones you belong to, and any leadership position you have held, for example: o Society of Women Engineers (SWE): Treasurer (06-07) o Tau Beta Phi ( ): Pledge master (07-08) Community service: List all volunteer organizations you have been involved in, dates active and any major responsibilities you were assigned Awards: A backwards chronological list of all awards, scholarships, fellowships or recognition in your academic, professional or volunteer life. References: The only thing you list here is: Available upon request. o Your reference list if very important, so do not give out your reference contact information without their consent, and also make sure you have asked your references to act as referees of your character. If they do not agree, do not list them (This is not the case with former employers, they expect being called so you do not have to ask them, but it is polite to do so).
