Volume 13, Number 20

Perfect?
Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, Matthew 19:21. Perfect is an amazing word. It conjures glorious ideas in our minds. Still, we commonly use it in connection with the negative word not. We might say, Oh, I know Im not perfect. We might even look at a situation and claim, Its not perfect, but it will have to do. We might pause and wonder exactly why we would even use the word. Who would want to be perfect, anyway? Beauty pageants have held a popular place in our culture for many years. Perhaps the best known, and watched has been the one that claims to crown Miss America. When the young woman is crowned, she is being acknowledged for her talent, intelligence, and appearance. She is supposed to be the ideal or perfect young woman. Consider what she has to go through to get to that point. There are many other prior contests. There is dedicated training. There is the constant attention to detail in manner, dress, deportment, speech, make-up, hair, shape, and the list goes on. We might be led to conclude that it is not easy being perfect. Perhaps Mac Davis old humorous song captured that tantalizingly enticing consideration of self. Oh Lord it's hard to be humble When you're perfect in every way. I can't wait to look in the mirror 'cause I get better looking each day. To know me is to love me. The rich, intelligent, and sincere young man came to Jesus and sought an answer for assurance of his condition. Jesus challenged him with what was needed to really be perfect. It appears that perfection was more than he wanted. RLD
