ARMA 4:00pm 8:00 am

The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family. Notes from the Pastor: This Sunday will be our last day of PSR classes for our kids here in Arma! After our class the kids, their families and our catechists will be having a cookout. Hopefully everybody will be enjoying the end of the school year celebration with both food and games! Let us thank God for a successful PSR year. Thank you to all our catechists and parents! Thank you to our kids for getting involved in our religion classes and activities. Thank you to their parents and guardians for their support and encouragement. Thank you to all our catechists Lucinda Bonine, Cristie Goodman, Kelly Schaub and the assistance of Aubri Ashbacher. Through their labors the seeds of faith are certainly sowed in the hearts of these children. Maybe we will not yet see the fruit of their labors, but we just do our part and leave the rest for God. It is like planting in our garden. We labor to prepare the soil, sow the best seeds or plant the best seedlings, water them, but the rest, we leave it to God. May God bless you a hundredfold for the work you have done for Gods vineyard! The month of May is a month for Mary! In places especially with Hispanic influence, children offer flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary in recognition of her role as the mother of God. This Sunday we are having our May Crowning as our own act of expressing our appreciation of the Mother of God, our Mother! Our children will lead us in this liturgical activity, It is very fitting as they crown our Blessed Mother, they are reminded that we are all citizens of heaven and our heavenly mother is awaiting our coming. For that to happen, like her, we have to love God and obey His commandments. May these children continue to open their minds and hearts to the grace of God that they may grow in His wisdom and strength! Every year we host in our parish a religious missionary who shares with us their missionary Next Sunday(05/12/2013) 8:00 AM Joseph Polhlopek Joe Broyles & Bill Harman Joan Black Linda Broyles Susan & Jaycie Polhlopek activities around the world. This is a part of the USCCBs Missionary Cooperation Plan which is aimed at supporting our missionaries and their missions! If you remember, last year we had Sr. Imelda, a Dominican nun from Great Bend, KS who talked to us about their missions. This year, a Carmelite nun from Wichita will be sharing in all our masses in Girard and Arma about their missionary activities and experiences. Like last year, we dont pass the basket or receive especial envelopes. Their support will be taken from our Diocesan United Catholic Stewardship which is funded from our Christmas and Easter contributions. Please include in your prayers our missionaries and their missionary activities, especially our guest this weekend the Carmelite nuns! I am repeating the invitation to all who have not yet attended the Virtus training. There is a session scheduled at 7:00 p.m. after Mass on Wed. May 8, at St. Michael Hall in Girard. As I have mentioned last Sunday, even if you are not planning for now or in the near future to volunteer in any capacity with minors around, this training is very helpful for all to gain a greater awareness of protecting our children and creating a safe environment in our facilities and wherever you are. I hope you will avail of this opportunity! May God bless you all! Fr. Roger

How Do You Say Goodbye? The Ascension The Ascension of the Lord is a feast that doesnt attract as much attention among the people, nor is it as impressive as Easter or Pentecost. However, it is a Holy Day of Obligation. In some regions, it is moved from its Thursday place on the calendar (which marks 40 days after Easter), to the next nearest Sunday. Personally, I believe it retains more meaning when kept as a separate feast, but perhaps, the aim is to avail more Catholics the opportunity to celebrate the event when it is moved to a Sunday. Jesus remained here forty days to make certain that sufficient people knew of the resurrection. The truth of that mystery had to be solidly established, for ALL of the other truths of our faith depend on it! But the time had come for Him to leave, and as Shakespeare wrote, parting is sorrowful. He gathered His disciples and spoke to them one last time, saying that He had to leave this earth and return to the Father. As He told them in John 16, if He did not go, the Paraclete would not come to them. He was going to heaven and told them: I go to prepare a place for you. Thus, the Feast takes on considerable importance for us! Each of us should be hopeful that the Lord has a place for us when we must leave this world. We should strive to love Him enough that the prepared place (think of it as a hotel reservation) is still waiting for us and that we merit it. He concluded by saying, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses...to the ends of the earth. He was asking us to be another Christ by every thought, word, and deed, Thats a large promise to keep: living the spirit of Christ, giving good example. We are assured if we are faithful to the Lord, He will never give our place to anyone else. Then He led them out as far as Bethany, raised His hands, and blessed them. As they were looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him from their sight. His Ascension demands that we realize that theres life beyond this one. He came to earth to take on our humanity and He rose to Heaven so we could take on His Divinity. This feast is the source of our hope for Heaven and the glory that we will someday share with the Lord. Be sure to assist this week at Ascension Mass. Our Indestructible Catholic Church As we near the Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Catholic Church over 2000 years ago, it is fitting to remember the words of Our Lord when he said, I will not leave you orphans and You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Our Church has faced every type of opposition through the centuries and never has she felt defeat. As G.K. Chesterton put it, Christendom has had a series of revolutions, and in each of them, Christianity died many times and risen again, for it had a God who knew the way out of the grave...Europe has been turned upside down over and over again, yet at the end of each uprising, the same religion has again been found on top. The faith is always converting the age. In every crisis, the Church has pulled herself together, renewed her strength, and come forth reinvigorated from what ought, humanly speaking, to have killed her. Thoughtful people seem to admit that, for better or worse, the Catholic Church is an institution quite unique, with great strength, vitality, and indestructibility. It may lack human perfection, but it is divine society, the Kingdom of God, on earth! Were interested in Gods truths, His teaching, and look to Him for help. We say with Peter, as he said to Christ, Where will we go? You have the words of eternal life.
