_________________________________________________________________________________ Dalai Lama wins 1.1 million pounds Templeton Prize: The Dalai Lama was today named as the winner of the prestigious Templeton Prize 2012 for his exceptional contribution to affirming life's spiritual dimension. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader has vigorously focused on the connections between the investigative traditions of science and Buddhism as a way to better understand and advance what both disciplines might offer the world, a release from the John Templeton Foundation said. The 1.1 million pounds prize will be presented to the Dalai Lama at the St Paul's Cathedral in London on May 14.

Air India Bailout The government approved a Rs 30,000 crore bailout for Air India on Thursday despite several Cabinet ministers being sceptical of the move. The funds are proposed to be pumped in over the next nine years but there will be an immediate infusion of Rs 6,750 crore to meet the airline's working capital requirement. This is in addition to the equity infusion of Rs 3,200 crore that has already been done.

Indian Political System India with a population of around a billion and an electorate of over 700 million is the world's largest democracy and, for all its faults and flaws, this democratic system stands in marked contrast to the democratic failures of Pakistan and Bangladesh which were part of India until 1947.

The head of state in India is the President. He has the executive power. Any bill that has to be passed must have his approval. Around 4,500 members of the national parliament and state legislators are eligible to vote in the election of the President.

There is also the post of Vice-President who is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of both houses of parliament. The Vice-President chairs the the upper house called the Rajya Sabha

TheRajya Sabha is the upper house of the Parliament. Membership is limited to 250 members, 12 of whom are chosen by the President for their expertise in specific fields of art, literature, science, and social services. These members are known as nominated members. The remainder of the body is elected by the state and territorial legislatures. Terms of office are six years, with one third of the members retiring every two years.

The Lok Sabha is the lower house of the Parliament of India. Members of the Lok Sabha are elected by people in Assembly elections. The Lok Sabha has 545 members,and two appointed non-partisan members to represent the Anglo-Indian community (if the President feels that that community is not adequately represented).

For a bill to be passed, it has to get the majority in Lok Sabha first, then Rajya Sabha and then finally signed by the president. For constitutional amendments 2/3rd majority is needed.
