Summer Reading Program Jun 17-Aug 9

Children of all ages can Dig Into Reading this summer at the Lansdowne Public Library! Independent readers may sign up for the Summer Reading Club, and children who read with their families may sign up for the Read-To-Me Club. Registration for both begins May 21st and reporting begins June 18. Do I have to read specific books, or can I read whatever I want? You can read whatever you want. Really? Can I read a magazine/blog/graphic novel/soup can? You can read whatever you want. If youre happy, were happy. Are there prizes? Yes. There are definitely prizes. For each book or every 20 minutes read children participating in the Dig into Reading program will earn a book buck. Book Bucks can be used to buy prizes at our library store called The Treasure Chest. However, if a total of 2000 books and 5000 minutes are read Miss Rachee and Miss Abbe have a hair-raising surprise for you! How much do I have to read every week? The time you spend reading is entirely up to you, but we recommend at least 20 minutes a day for children in the Summer Reading Club. For more program news, visit http://www.lansdownelibrary.org

Dig into Early Literacy!

It's a summer reading program just for our youngest library friends! Each week we will focus on one of the pre-reading skills and explore them through fun activities. At the completion of the program children will earn a prize. The six skills are:
Print motivation - or liking books - means children will want to learn to read. Phonological awareness - helps children sound out written words. Vocabulary - helps children recognize written words and understand what they read. Narrative skills - helps children develop thinking and comprehension skills. Print awareness - helps children feel comfortable with books and understand that print is useful. Letter knowledge - helps children figure out how to sound out words.

Storytimes Our storytimes for children ages birth to 5 years continue into the summer. There is no registration for storytimes; just walk right in!
