The apartheid state employed many weapons against its opponents: imprisonment, banning, detention, assassination and banishment. In a practice reminiscent of Tsarist and Soviet Russia, a large number of enemies of the state were banished to remote areas, far from their homes, communities and followers. Here their existence became a slow torture of the soul,
a kind of social death. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid, set in a global, historical and comparative perspective. It looks at the reasons why people were banished, their lives in banishment and the efforts of a remarkable group of activists, led by Helen Joseph, to assist them.

classical studies
The historians, classicists and psychiatrists who have come together to produce Mental Disorders in the Classical World aim to explain how the Greeks and their Roman successors conceptualized, diagnosed and treated mental disorders. The Greeks initiated the secular understanding of mental illness, and have left us a large body of penetrating and thought-provoking writing on the subject, ranging in time from Homer to the sixth
century AD. With the conceptual basis of modern psychiatry once again under intense debate, we need to learn from other rational approaches even when they lack modern scientific underpinnings. Meanwhile this volume adds a rich chapter to the cultural and medical history of antiquity. The contributors include a high proportion of the bestregarded scholars in this field, together with papers by some of its rising stars.

This unique collection of essays celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the seminal journal the European Journal of Crime, Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, as well as the outstanding and uninterrupted work over that period of its founding Editor-in-Chief, Professor Cyrille Fijnaut. The volume consists of a selection of some of the most ground-breaking articles published over the past twenty years, covering the three areas of focus of the journal: problems of crime, developments in criminal law and changes in criminal justice. It thus explores such diverse issues as the problems of crime in Central and Eastern Europe after the disappearance of the Soviet Union and the collapse of Yugoslavia; the allocation of criminal law
power in the European Union; police cooperation in the border areas of the Member States; the criminalization of white collar crime; the establishment of European police services and of a European Public Prosecutors Office; new forms of criminal justice cooperation between the Member States; and many others. The journals unique multidisciplinary approach and its commitment to offer insights from a wide variety of European countries and language areas ensure that a varied range of perspectives are offered on the topics discussed. The result is an enlightening and highly readable anthology, shedding light on the extraordinary developments that have taken place in the area of crime and punishment in Europe.

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982: A Commentary Online
Edited by Myron Nordquist, Satya N. Nandan, Shabtai Rosenne
These Commentaries are based almost entirely on the formal and informal documentation of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III, 1973-1982), coupled, where necessary, with the personal knowledge of editors, contributors, or reviewers, many of whom were principal negotiators or UN personnel who participated in the Conference. The scope and duration of the Virginia Commentary project is without precedent as an academic undertaking in the field of international law. The project was conceived by its editors to meet the need - particularly essential in the absence of an official legislative history for the Convention for an objective and comprehensive analysis of the articles in the Convention and in the Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the Convention that entered into force in 1996.
The Supplement to the seven-volume series is also included in the online edition. Prepared at the University of Virginias Center for Oceans Law and Policy, it contains additional primary documents and materials related directly to the Convention. In Filling Regulatory Gaps in High Seas Fisheries, author Yoshinobu Takei investigates the regime of high seas fisheries from the perspective of international law and considers whether there are regulatory gaps and, if so, how they should be filled.
Of special interest is a set of chapters by distinguished scholars and jurists providing nuanced analysis of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea as a key actor in the institutional and regime structure. Other expert authors contribute timely analysis of specific ocean uses in the context of implementation of soft and hard law.
In this book No Cornago asserts the need to restore the longinterrupted continuity between the relevance of diplomacy as raison de systme - in a world which is much more than a world of States - and its unique value as a way to mediate the many alienations experienced by individuals and social groups.

A Global Perspective on Continuities and Discontinuities from the 19th to the 21st Centuries
Edited by Dirk Hoerder, Arizona State University, and Amarjit Kaur, University of New England
Proletarian and Gendered Mass Migrations connects the 19th- and 20th-century labor migrations and migration systems in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macroregional internal continuities or discontinuities and interactions between and within macroregions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian
migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations. Studies on historical development over time are supplemented by case studies on present migrations in Asia and from Asia. A systems approach is combined with human agency perspectives.
