1.0 Introduction The theme in a piece of fiction is its controlling idea or its central insight.

The theme carries the central idea, the belief, the message or the moral value of the story. It is the author's underlying meaning or main idea that he is trying to convey. The theme may be the author's thoughts about a topic or view of human nature. The title of the short story usually points to what the writer is saying and he may use various figures of speech to emphasize his theme, such as symbol, allusion, simile, metaphor, hyperbole or irony. There are two meanings for the word character: The person in a work of fiction. The characteristics of a person.

Persons in a work of fiction ( antagonist and protagonist ) Short stories use a few characters. One character is clearly central to the story with all major events having some importance to this character, he or she is the protagonist. The main character is called the antagonist. In order for a story to seem real to the reader its characters must seem real. Characterization is the information the author gives the reader about the characters themselves. The author may reveal a character in several ways such as his or her physical appearance, what he or she says, thinks, feels and dreams, what he or she does or does not do and what others say about him or her and how others react to him or her. Characters are convincing if they are: consistent, motivated, and life like. A plot is a series of events arranged in an interesting manner in time. It has a basic pattern which can be plotted graphically. Exposition Beginning which answers question on who, when, what and where. Rising action Climax Falling action Resolution Conflicts or problem encountered by the main character. The highest point in the story. Actions taken to resolve conflicts. Ending where problems are resolved.

Setting is the time and location in which a story takes place is called the setting. For some stories the setting is very important, while for others it is not. There are

several aspects of a story's setting to consider when examining how setting contributes to a story ( some, or all, may be present in a story ). Place - geographical location. Where is the action of the story taking place ? Time - When is the story taking place ? ( historical period, time of day, year ) Weather conditions - Is it rainy, sunny, stormy, ? Social conditions - What is the daily life of the characters like? Does the story contain local colour (writing that focuses on the speech, dress, mannerisms, customs, etc. of a particular place) ? Mood or atmosphere - What feeling is created at the beginning of the story ? Is it bright and cheerful or dark and frightening ?

2.0 Synopsys
For his biology class, Dave goes on a field trip to search for creatures to dissect and study. Dave and his friends spot a lizard on a cherry tree, climb the tree to get it, and break the tree. The owner of the tree charges the boys six dollars but Dave could not pay the dollar. Daves teacher, Professor Hubert, pays for Dave but then asks Dave to pay him back by doing some chores after school. Dave cannot afford to stay after school because he has to help his strict dad, Lusterbut Professor Herbert not agrees. When Dave finally arrives home, his dad mad that he had to do the farm chores alone. Dave explains what happened at school but Luster is not completely convinced about Daves biology excuse and decides to go to the school in the morning with his gun. Professor Hubert is frightening of Lusters overall presence with a gun and Luster ignorant of all school related subjects Trough out the day, Luster shadow Professor Hubert and learns about germs that is about school in present time When the day is over, Professor Hubert tells Dave to forget the debt but Luster tells Dave to pay it back. Both Luster and Dave stay to payback the debt In the end, Luster apologizes to his son for his ignorance about school and tells him to always pay his debts.

3.0 Theme

Patience of a teacher A teacher who patiently treat various types of parental whims. Even has been scolded, the teacher still able to control the situation and prove themselves that the present education system more challenging. Teachers would be able to control emotions when dealing with a hot-tempered parent. In this story, we can see the patience of Professor Herbert as a Daves teacher, he able to playing his role as a professional teacher and can solve the problem without any help from others. For example, when Daves father come to school to see him and bring a gun, he still can act normal. "Yes," says Pa, pulling out his gun and laying it on the seat in Professor Herbert's office. Professor Herbert's eyes got big behind his black-rimmed glasses when he saw Pa's gun. "I was only doing my duty," says Professor Herbert, "Mr. Sexton, and following the course of study the state provided us with." Another thing is when Daves father angry with him, he still can control his emotion and always think positive. He was not going to get anger with Daves father but he explain to Daves father that there has a reason why he did the punishment to his son. "What else could I have done with Dave, Mr. Sexton?" says Professor Herbert. "The boys didn't have any business all climbing that cherry tree after one lizard. One boy could have gone up in the tree and got it. The farmer charged us six dollars. It was a little steep, I think, but we had it to pay. Must I make five boys pay and let your boy off? He said he didn't have the dollar and couldn't get it. So I put it in for him. I'm letting him work it out. He's not working for me. He's working for the school!"

4.0 Character

Dave Obey

I threw down my books in the chip yard. I ran to the barn to spread fodder on the ground for the cattle. I didn't take time to change my clean school clothes for my old work clothes. I ran out to the barn. I saw Pa spreading fodder on the ground to the cattle. That was my job. I ran up to the fence. I say, "Leave that for me, Pa. I'll do it. I'm just a little late." Always worries

I don't mind staying after school," I says to Professor Herbert, "but I'd rather you'd whip me with a switch and let me go home early. Pa will whip me anyway for getting home two hours late." Good sons

My boy is good as the rest, not he? A bullet will make a hole in a schoolteacher same as it will anybody else. He can't do me that way and get by with it. I'll plug him first. I aim to go down there bright and early in the morning and get all this straight! I aim to see about bug learning and this running all over God's creation hunting snakes, lizards, and frogs. Ransacking the country and going through cherry orchards and breaking the trees down after lizards! 0ld Eif Crabtree ought to apoured the hot lead to him instead o' charging six dollars for the tree! He ought to agot old Herbert the first one!"

Difficult to trust other

"Are you telling me the truth?" says Pa. "I'm telling you the truth," I say. "Go and see for yourself." "I don't mean to dispute your word," says Pa, "but I don't believe it. 5.0 Plot

Exposition Dave caught with six of his colleagues as climbing a cherry tree. They had been fine of six dollars for broke down the tree. Dave cannot pay because he had no money. He was fined by Professor Herbert. He is required to do charity work for two hours after school to pay the debt of one dollar. Rising action Dave gets home at night after finishing her fine. His father scolded for returning late. Father accused him of deliberately did not want help his father in the barn. Dave denied and told his father that he was fined for broke down the cherry tree. He needs to do charity work for two hours a day to get 50 cent wages from his teacher to pay for the tree. Climax Dave and his father go to school on the next day. His father brought a gun to meet Professor Herbert to ask about the truth. Professor Herbert surprised by the presence of Daves father who came in anger. Professor Herbert trying to calm his father. Falling action Daves father scolded Professor Herbert because ask his son to finding a lizard. His father thought that Professor Herbert teaches his son in a incorrect way and harmful to his children. But Professor Herbert explained to him that the new learning is different from before. Professor Herbert brought his father to the lab and indicates to him that there is a germ in the human body. His father see the germ through a microscope. Resolution Lastly, his father believes that the existence of germ in the human body. His father is aware that today's learning has progressed and did not like the old school. Then, father had fully believed Professor Herbert because he had reason to do the punishment to Dave. Daves father regret his act of scolding Professor Herbert. Dave's father eventually help Dave solve the recompense.

6.0 setting Place

Cherry tree The tree that Dave and his friend had broke down.

I have to punish you for climbing up in that cherry tree. Why did we do all of this? Six of us climbed up in a little cherry tree after one little lizard! School The place that Dave studied and the place that his father meet Professor Herbert "I'll attend to that myself in the morning. I'll take care of him. He was not from this county no how.
