The Coanda story (in terview)

Some quotes from th e in terview: "I believed a more effective motor fen ce could be utilized by creatin g a vacuum in fron t of, or above th e aircraft, in to wh ich th e plan e would be drawn . Th is is a n atural ph en omen on , demon strated every time a torn ado ravages th e coun tryside" "a powerplan t with n ot a sin gle movin g part" "I wan ted th e vacuum above th e surface, an d un der h igh pressure, to be derived from a circular motion of gases. In 1932, wh en I was first experimen tin g with th is circular effect, I was producin g as h igh as six ton s of liftin g power per square yard above th e win g." "I in creased its power (ordin ary pistol en gin e) by 53.5 per cen t!" He modified th e exh aust system with a "depressor"."

Hen ri Coan da, an aeron autical en gin eer from Ruman ia, was livin g in Paris at th e turn of th e cen tury. By 1910, Coan da h ad built wh at migh t be con sidered th e first jet aircraft in th e world- th e bi-plan e "Turbin e Aeroplan e" wh ich was displayed in Paris. Coan da, h owever, missed h is cr itical h istorical claim to fame wh ile toyin g with th e air craft's primitive motor-driven th ermal jet turbin e wh ich started th e aircraft rollin g forward. Not bein g a pilot, Coan da jumped in to th e jet aircraft an yway an d attempted to fly it. He failed an d crash ed, bein g ejected from th e aircraft in th e process. An oth er Turbin e Aeroplan e was n ot attempted. However, Coan da n oticed th at th e flames from th e en gin e exh austs wen t aroun d th e protective plates an d con verged again on th e fuselage. Th is led to Coan da's famous ph ysical ph en omen on discovery th at wh en a liquid moves at h igh speed n ear a curved surface, it adapts itself to th at curvature. Th is also applies to air, but th e flow speed must be much h igh er for effectiven ess. It is a "suction " effect. Th us, th e "Coan da Effect" was discovered an d Coan da h imself quick ly experimen ted with it before filin g for th ree n ew propulsion paten ts in 1938. Paten t No.2,108,652 dated Feb 15, 1938 con cern ed airflow acceleration over th e periph ery of a con cave disc. Despite th is remar k able idea, n o official in terest came of it un til th e German occupation of Paris in 1940. T h e SS immediately brough t Coan da in an d put h im to wor k on design in g a large disc to be powered by th e latest in German jet en gin e tech n ology. Coan da for h is part design ed a stran ge len ticular disc with a diameter of 20 meters. It was to utilize twelve Jumo 004 jet en gin es in stalled in a radial pattern on its periph ery with jet n ozzles th at fork ed in to th ree pipes directed towards th e th ick extern al rin g. On ce lift was obtain ed,acceleratin g th e en gin es on on e side would cause th e oth er side to go down wards an d th e craft wen t in th at direction . Wh ile Coan da's design was a masterpiece of jet disc tech n ology, on ly scale model win d tun n el testin g was perfor med by th e en d of th e war. Such a mach in e would n ot be practical due to th e n umber of jet en gin es requiredvital en gin es th at th e Me-262 Sch walbe an d Ar-234 Blitz desperately n eeded. Th e large mach in e would h ave also con sumed large amoun ts of aviation fuel of wh ich German y h ad a critical sh ortage of. Postwar, h owever, Coan da's work was validated by scien tists of th e Allied research services wh ich declared h is propulsion system suitable in 1949.

Th e Corn ell Aeron autical Laboratory in th e US durin g 1952 furth er added to Coan da's credibility wh en tests per formed usin g h is propulsion system came back with positive results. Coan da subsequen tly filed n ew paten ts in th e 1960s for disc aircraft an d propulsion systems but n on e of h is cr aft were ever con structed.
