CST/Telecom Technician

Career Opportunities: Computer repair and upgrade, telecommunications installer, DSL installation, cable internet, cable TV installer, CCTV installer, voice and data or structure wiring installer, security system installer, bench technician, electronic technician, electrician apprentice.

Start Date: First Monday of every month. Competency-based curriculum. Location: JobTrain 1200 O'Brien Drive, Menlo Park, CA 94025 (650) 330-6429 Length of Training: 4 Modules, 20 weeks (600 hours): Module I 240 Hrs 8 weeks Computer Service Technician Module II 150 Hrs 4 weeks Wireless Networking Module III 210 Hrs 8 weeks Telecommunications Installer Module IV Basic Electronic Theory (concurrently with first two modules) Optional additional training - 210 hours (an additional 7 weeks) Telecommunications Technician competencybased education and student may choose some modules with permission of the instructor. Installer positions require climbing poles and ladders with 50 to 70 pounds of equipment. Technician positions have less physically demanding requirements. Students must maintain a 90% attendance level. INSTRUCTIONAL OUTCOMES: Computer Service Technician Install motherboards, memory, CPUs, hard drives, floppy drives, CD and DVD drives. Format drives. Install operating system, load and remove software, upgrade OS and software programs. Troubleshoot and repair common computer problems. Wireless Networking Learn to set up a network in a home or business that uses wireless components NIC cards and wireless routers with desktop computers or laptops. Learn the security precautions and how to install and configure wireless access points. Learn to help home users set up their computers to access public wireless network. Telecommunications Installer Terminate CAT 5e and 6 cables with RJ 45 plugs and jacks, coaxial cables with connectors and make fiber optic cables with connectors and splices. Do punch down and cross-connects.

Test cables with LinkRunner or Fluke DSP cable analyzer and use fiber optic power meter as appropriate. Assemble simple LANS with copper cables, fiber optic cables and wireless. Set up a closed circuit TV. Telecommunications Technician Use oscilloscope and digital multimeter to measure signals, describe and demonstrate modulation methods of a signal, harmonics, distortion, and demodulation circuits. Describe and demonstrate land line telephony and cell phone telephony. Life Skills and Job Readiness workshops are included in training. Completion Requirements: Completion requirements are based upon enrollment expectations and completing instructional outcomes. Certification Track: Students are prepared to take the national A+ Certification exam. Accreditation: Fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC).
