When selecting a heat exchanger, certain principles are frequently used. The descriptions below are given to explain some of these principles. Exergys engineers will perform these and other calculations to recommend the optimal heat exchanger to meet your needs.
Heat Exchanger:
accomplished with numerous small fluid passages, or a long tortuous fluid path. While beneficial for heat transfer, these configurations often create significant resistance to flow. The pressure drop is a measure of this resistance, and is calculated as follows: The pressure drop is used either to determine the fluid flow rate through the heat exchanger, or the size of the pump used to pump the fluid. P = Pin Pout
A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermal energy from a warmer fluid into a cooler fluid, without allowing the two fluids to mix or come in contact with each other.
Exergy offers the following two types of heat exchangers: The shell & tube heat exchanger consists of a number of small diameter tubes (the bundle) enclosed inside a larger tube (the shell). One fluid flows through the small tubes, the other flows around the outside of them. Connections are provided at each end to connect the fluid inlets and outlets. The tubeintube heat exchanger consists of two tubes, an inner and an outer coiled together. As with the shell & tube, one fluid flows through the inner tube, the other flows around the outside of it.
Effectiveness:
For two given fluid streams, there is a maximum amount of heat that can be transferred. For example, it is impossible for the hot fluid to be cooled to a temperature colder than the inlet temperature of the cold fluid. This is shown in the diagram below.
The heat transfer rate (Q) of any heat exchanger is a measure of how quickly thermal energy is being transferred from the warmer fluid to the cooler fluid. It is expressed in units of BTU/hr or Watts. The transfer area (A) is the total area of the wall separating the two fluids, through which the thermal energy is transferred. For Exergy heat exchangers, it is the outside surface area of the tubes inside the shell.
The overall heat transfer coefficient (U) is a measure of the heat exchangers ability to transfer heat between fluids. It is determined by the physical properties properties of the fluids used, and the geometry of the heat exchanger. Due to their small size, the heat transfer coefficient for Exergy heat exchangers is usually greater than the values published for shell and tube heat exchangers. This means that often the desired amount of heat transfer can be accomplished with a smaller transfer area. This coefficient is used to calculate the heat transfer rate as follows: Q=UA T

An efficient heat exchanger allows both fluids to come in close proximity to each other, without mixing. This is often
A = Heat transfer area, ft2 [m2] Cp = Specific heat or heat capacity, BTU/(lbF) [kJ/(kgC)] m = Mass flow rate, lb/hr [kg/sec] P = Pressure loss, psi [kPa] Q = Heat transfer rate, BTU/hr [W] Tin, Tout = Inlet and outlet temperatures respectively, F [C] T = Characteristic temperature difference, F [C] U = Overall heat transfer coefficient, BTU/(hrft2F) [W/(m2C)] = Effectiveness, dimensionless
Transfer Area:
The effectiveness ( ) of a heat exchanger is the ratio of the actual heat transferred to this maximum possible amount, and is calculated as follows: (m Cp)hot (Tin Tout)hot
