Learning Objective: Learning Outcome: Man And The Variety Of Living Things Cell as a unit of life Understanding cells 1.1 A student is able to: identify that cell is the basic unit of living things

Materials:

Activity Sheet 1, red and blue colour pencils, writing paper.

Teacher:

Good afternoon, boys and girls! I have a question for you today. Look at yourself and your friends. Who can tell me what are you made of? Teacher waits and listens to the students' responses. Student: hair, skin, teeth nerves, bones. Well, your answers are not wrong but think again what make up your hair, skin, teeth, nerves and bones. Teacher encourages the students. If necessary teacher can give a little hint by writing the letter "C" on the board. Students : cells That is right! You are made of cells. Every part of you - your bones, your muscles, your skin, your blood, your teeth, your hair - is made of cells. These cells are so tiny that you can only see them using a microscope. Teacher arranges some activity sheets on the teacher's table. Activity 1 I am going to start off today's lesson with a story. Now, stop whatever you are doing and put away all your books. I would like you to listen very carefully. With suspense music, teacher reads the following in an expressive manner. Two aliens, Nano and Piko were sent to Planet Earth to investigate the living things on earth. They have been observing you sitting under a tree through their machine.

Teacher poses the following questions. They must be thinking.. What would they observe about you and your structure? What would they observe about the tree? What are the similarities between you and the plant? Students may be eager to answer but teacher would listen to them and ask them to discuss in their groups and then present their thoughts. Now, you can work in groups and tell the class your group's answer. It would be interesting to share your ideas. Before that, I am going to put you into eight groups. As I move from student to student, each of you will number yourself starting with ONE till FIVE and remember your number. Teacher goes to a student and ask the student to say the number one, the next student say the number two and so on until the fifth student. When the teacher is near the sixth student, the student starts off with the number one again. Now each of you have a number. All the students with ONE forms a group. Students with TWO forms another group and so on. I am sure you can do this quietly. Students move into their groups quietly. Good, you have done it perfectly. First, I will give each group Activity Sheet 1- Under the lens. These will give you hints to the three questions. If any of the groups cannot read any of the words just raise

your hands. Teacher distributes activity sheet 1 to the groups Please look at the Activity Sheet 1. First you read the text. Then look at the instructions. You have to circle in red the name of the basic living unit. Then you underline in blue the organisms formed from these basic units. Next, complete the text by filling in the missing words. Students are given 5-10 minutes to discuss and 2 groups can be called to give their answers to the activity sheets to the class. Teacher then reinforce the correct answer. Let us go through your answers for activity sheet - 1 and clear some of your doubts. All organisms including animals, plants and humans are made up of cells. The cell is the basic unit for carrying out the processes of life. Do you know what is meant by the basic unit? Teacher waits and listens to students responses. Yes, you are right in saying that it is the smallest working unit. Can you name a few processes of life? Students maybe slow in responding. What do all living things do? Teacher waits and listens to students responses.

Very good! Respiration, giving birth to young ones, digestion, getting rid of waste products and many others are examples of processes of life. Refer to the Activity Sheet 1. What is the name of the basic living unit? Teacher waits and listens to students responses. Yes, the name of the basic living unit is the cell. Teacher waits and listens to students responses. How many of the words 'cell' have you coloured? Teacher waits and listens to students responses. Four? Thats right. What have you underlined in blue the organisms formed from these basic units. Teacher waits and listens to students responses. Yes, the organisms are . animals, plants and humans. Look at the text where you have to fill in the blanks. Can someone read aloud the group's answers. A student reads aloud the answer, while the others listen. Yes, all complex living things consist of millions of tiny cells which can only be seen using the microscope. There are many types of cells. All these cells work together to perform a specific function. Cells exist in different forms and sizes. I am glad that all the groups have shown good effort. We will have to stop here but before I end this lesson

I want you to read further on cells and make notes on it . You can get information from reference books in the library or the Internet. Thank you, have a good day.
