Why Did God Make Tornados?

Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, Where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, Where the floods overflow me (Psalms 69:1-2).

When you live in Tornado Alley, you know that a devastating storm is a regular possibility. In the back of our minds we try to prepare ourselves for what may come. We even build precautions, warning systems, and safety plans into our lives. Still, we are almost always stunned by the terrible destruction that is left in the wake when the storm has passed. When the storm has passed responses usually fall into one of two categories. Many people turn to God with a sense of thanks for their safety and a desire for His aid as they seek to rebuild. Others look to question and blame. A not uncommon question asks, Why did God do this, or allow this to happen to me? There are facts of life as we know it. If you are standing in the way of danger as it approaches, you will generally be harmed. We are not invincible. When the tornado comes, there will be havoc. I think about the words of Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption as he recounted the troubles that had entered his life. I was in the path of the tornado... I just didn't expect the storm would last as long as it has. Frankly, it is not the storm that we fear, or even the immediate pain that it brings. It is the life altering consequences after the storm that cause our soul to tremble. As we look to the natural challenges in the world and nature around us, we may pause to wonder why God made tornados. Still it is in the wake of the storm that the faith in action is allowed to grow in our lives. We build best in the wake of the storm. Russ

Special Tornado Donations

We have all been touched by the devastation of the recent tornado. While we are greatly thankful that personal injuries were very limited, several members of the congregation have been left with great damage to their properties. Some homes have been total losses, while others have repairable damage. There are also other loses including clothing, furniture, personal items of every kind, as well as irreplaceable keepsakes. We will try to have a list of those affected. If you would like to financially aid the members of our congregation who were affected by the tornado with a monetary offering, you may do so very easily through the church. Simply write a separate check, or add an amount to your regular contribution and assign the additional contribution to Tornado Relief. These additional funds will be distributed to the needs of our members. Be sure to state the additional amount that is to go to the aid of the affected members.
