1. Identify
a. Albrecht Durer
i. Sometimes called the “German Leonardo.” He employed the
techniques of the Italian masters in his paintings, especially in his
engravings. Many of his engravings portray the religious upheaval of
his age. He helped spread the Italian Renaissance ideas in his
homeland.
b. Jan van Eyck
i. His portrayals of townspeople and religious scenes abound in rich
and realistic detail. He also developed oil paint which produced
strong colors and a hard surface that could survive centuries.
c. Francois Rabelais
i. A French humanist that had a varied career as a monk, physician,
Greek scholar, and author. He uses his characters in his books to
offer opinions on religion, education, and other serious subjects.
d. William Shakespeare
i. The towering figure of Renaissance literature. He was an English
poet and playwright. His love of words vastly enriched the English
language. More than 1700 new words appeared for the first time in
his works. (examples: bedroom, lonely, generous, gloomy, heartsick,
hurry, and sneak.
e. Miguel de Cervantes
i. The writer of one great work Don Quixote, which was an
entertaining tale that mocks romantic notions of medieval chivalry.
f. Johann Gutenberg
i. He printed the first complete edition of the bible using the first
printing press and printing inks in the west. Gutenberg and his
successors built on earlier advances.
2. Define
a. Engraving
i. A form of art in which the artist sketches a design on a metal plate
with acid and then uses the plate to make multiple prints.
b. Vernacular
i. Everyday language of ordinary people.
c. Utopian
i. An ideal society.
3. How did Durer help bring the Renaissance to Northern Europe?
a. He studied the techniques of the Italian masters and then brought home
what he had learned by employing these methods in his paintings.
4. What themes did Erasmus and More raise in their writings?
a. Erasmus strived for equality not only in writing (the same language), but in
the church as well, for he believed it was very corrupt at the time. More

believed in a utopia where no one is idle, all are educated, and justice is
used to end crime rather than eliminate the criminal.
5. What were three effects of the printing revolution?
a. An enormous increase in the amount of works printed.
b. Printed books were cheaper and easier to produce than hand-copied works.
c. Printing books exposed educated Europeans to new ideas, greatly
expanding their horizons.
6. Why do you think the cultural flowering of the northern Renaissance did not begin
until after economic growth had taken place?
a. Once the economic growth took place, things really began moving.
Everything started to fit together, the printing press was created, and ideas
were spread.

Question: Are there differences between the Renaissance in the North and in Italy?
Answer: The Italian renaissance has more secular and humanist themes. They have more
urban cities and which are based on trade, manufacturing, and especially banking. Artists
started caring more about human anatomy and got more realistic in their paintings.
