AAPS SPRING MEETING MAY 17, 2013 COLUMBUS, OHIO AGENDA & SPEAKER BIOS 1:00 pm Welcome & Introductory Remarks Lawrence Huntoon, M.D., Ph.D. 1:05 pm 1:15 pm Ohio Health Freedom Act - H.B. 91 Representative Ron Young Ron Young and his wife, Kathy, reside in Leroy Township, where they have lived since 1987. They have five daughters and one grandchild. Since 2011, and previously from 1997 through 2004, Ron has represented eastern Lake County as its State Representative in the Ohio General Assembly. Ron served in the United States Army for four years. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Kent State University, where he received a BA of Psychology and a Certificate in Education from Cleveland State University. He taught in the public school system just after graduation. In 1981, Ron founded Technical Employment Services Inc (TES), which focuses on Engineering, Scientific and Industrial segment job placement. 1:15 pm 2:15 pm Impeding Access to High-Quality Patient Care: Counterproductive MOC, MOL, CME. Ken Christman, M.D. Ken, son of missionary parents, spent his early childhood years in Brazil and Peru. He graduated from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1973 and began practicing Plastic and Reconstructive surgery in Dayton, Ohio in 1981. He has served as Secretary of the Montgomery County Medical Society, in Dayton, Ohio and as Delegate to the Ohio State Medical Association. Last year, along with other concerned Ohio physicians, Dr. Christman helped lead efforts to oppose plans by the State Medical Board of Ohio to impose new Maintenance of Licensure requirements on physician practicing in this state. 2:15 pm 3:00 pm MOL, MOC and Now Continuous MOC- important steps in stopping the unlimited expansion of regulatory capture now. Paul Kempen, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Paul M. Kempen is an American born and raised staff anesthesiologist at the main campus of the Cleveland Clinic who has worked in private practice, but predominantly in tertiary academic centers over his 30 years of clinical practice. As a board certified anesthesiologist, he has been actively following the mounting attempts to change board certification (from the original resident educational outcome measure of excellence) into a basic requirement for a state license renewal (MOL). He is a clinician and educator, received his medical education in Europe, undergraduate education and anesthesia residency at the University of Michigan and has participated in international volunteerism, most recently after the Haiti earthquake in the "second wave" on the USNS Comfort with Project HOPE. 3:00 pm 3:15 pm BREAK 3:15 pm 3:30 pm What to Expect from ObamaCare in a Blue State Wayne Iverson, M.D., M.B.A. AAPS Board Member, Wayne Iverson, M.D. is a physician in private practice with offices in the San Diego, California area. He practices Internal Medicine and Noninvasive Cardiology. He is the past Chairman of the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and continues as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California at San Diego Volunteer Faculty, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He previously was appointed as a Solo & Small Group Practice CMA Delegate from San Diego County. After joining AAPS in 2009, Dr. Iverson reenergized the AAPS California State Chapter and

in 2010 co-organized the National Doctors Tea Party. Last year Dr. Iverson stepped up to run for Congress in Californias 52nd District and is now speaking throughout Southern California about What to Expect under ObamaCare.

3:15 pm 4:00 pm Legal Strategies to Combat the War on Doctors and Patients. Andrew Schlafly, Esq. Andy Schlafly is the General Counsel for the Association of American Physicians & Surgeons. Mr. Schlafly received his law degree magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as an editor on the Law Review. He clerked for Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and has taught at Seton Hall Law School, and speaks and writes widely. He filed the landmark lawsuit against the Texas Medical Board, and last year he deposed its Executive Director and its former President. He also led the filing by AAPS of 8 amicus briefs against ObamaCare, which is more than any other organization. Last month Mr. Schlafly launched the AAPS lawsuit against the ABMS. 4:00 pm 4:30 pm Change Board Recertification - The Start of a Movement Ron Benbassat, M.D. ChangeBoardRecert.com Dr. Benbassat practices Internal Medicine in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Benbassat has recertified in the past with the American Board of Internal Medicine but does not intend to do so again. He is an activist working to prevent Maintenance of Certification from becoming required to maintain licensure. To assist in his efforts he founded Change Board Recertification, a national movement of physicians committed to reforming the Board Recertification process 4:30 pm 4:50 pm Physician-Led Efforts to Create Rational Alternatives to MOC. Martin Dubravec, M.D. Dr. Dubravec was born and raised in Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois for both undergraduate and medical school. He completed an Army residency, fellowship in Allergy/Immunology, and a 4 year commitment prior to moving to Cadillac, MI, where he has been in solo practice for the past 12 years. In addition to

doing the bidding of his wife and children, his interests include the issue of board certification. He enjoys the outdoors, is organist for his church, has been a teacher for his homeschooled children, and is director of marionettes for the Great White Pine Puppet Company. He is very appreciative of the AAPS, Dr. Benbassat, Dr. Kempen, and all individuals for taking on this issue of board certification. 4:50 pm 5:10 pm Case Study: A physician's experience with onerous MOC Juliette Madrigal, M.D. AAPS President Dr. Juliette Madrigal-Dersch, M.D. is a graduate of the University of Texas, Austin, Texas A&M Medical School, and was Chief Resident at Oklahoma Univ. School of Medicine. She started her own traditional medical practice in 1992 in Marble Falls, Texas. In addition Dr. Madrigal is currently the Burnet County Health Authority and Medical Director of the Horseshoe Bay, Spicewood, and Marble Falls Fire Departments. Dr. Madrigal has an active speaking schedule including appearances on the Nick Cavuto show, NBC News, town hall meetings, and briefings to Congress on Capitol Hill. 5:10 pm 5:30 pm Opposing MOC via Organized Medicine Lawrence Huntoon, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Huntoon is editor-in-chief of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a past president of the AAPS, serves on the AAPS board of directors and is chairman of the AAPS Committee to Combat Sham Peer Review. He is an unrepentant lampoonist, whose subjects have included Medicare bureaucrats, otherwise known as the Blue Bunglers, managed care moguls, and others who are intent on demeaning, devaluing, attacking, and oppressing those who practice medicine. In addition to his collection of managed care cartoons, known as Huntoon Lampoons, his creations have included the WEDONT CARE HMO Card, and his collection of correspondence with HCFA and Medicare bureaucrats, known as Little Frank, which now stands over ten feet tall and weighs well over 200 pounds. Trained as a medical research scientist with a Ph.D. in neurophysiology, Dr. Huntoon is a practicing solo neurologist who is opted out of Medicare and runs a third party-free practice in the Buffalo area. 5:30 pm 6:00 pm Q & A, Group Discussion

Hes an economist and policy specialist. On Capitol Hill he is known for developing free market solutions and effective legislative coalitions. He is a respected leader in Washington DC and frequently relied on as a policy expert. While on Capitol Hill, he has worked for a Governor, and represented an academic think tank. Charlie has been published at Entrepreneur.com, Fox Business, the Daily Caller, and Women Entrepreneur in addition to writing congressional testimony and speeches for politicians, business owners, and academics. 7:00 pm 7:30 pm DINNER 7:30 pm 7:45 pm Update on AAPS Initiatives to Protect Physician Autonomy, Preserve Patient-Physician Relationship Jane Orient, M.D. Dr. Jane M. Orient, Executive Director of Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, has been in solo practice of general internal medicine since 1981 and is a clinical lecturer in medicine at the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine. She

received her undergraduate degrees in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Arizona, and her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is the author of Sapiras Art and Science of Bedside Diagnosis; the fourth edition has just been published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. She also authored YOUR Doctor Is Not In: Healthy Skepticism about National Health Care, published by Crown. 7:45 pm 8:05 pm Assume the Physician John Hunt, M.D. - www.ReadJohnHunt.com John Hunt loves to write, and does so as often as he can. John is also a pediatrician, pulmonologist and allergist/immunologist. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia, where he has been since 1998. Dr. Hunt received his B.A. from Amherst College and his MD with Distinction from George Washington University School of Medicine. He was an officer in the United States Navy, serving in both active duty and reserve roles as a pediatrician including three years stationed in Iceland. He has founded several active companies, in transportation, medical device manufacturing, advertising, laboratory research, and pharmaceutical development. He co-founded Trusted Angels Foundation, and frequently travels to Liberia in capacities as a physician, investor, and in performance of humanitarian work. John feels a personal responsibility to serve children. He is a strong advocate of free-market economic growth as the best way to create wealth and lessen poverty and, by so doing, advance the well-being of children. He does not trust government to do what individual people should be doing. John has two wonderful teenagers, one of whom is attending the University of Virginia. He lives, for the most part, in central Virginia.
