A2 Film Studies Documentary Nanook of the North Attempt to answer the following questions on the opening 20mins of Nanook

of the North? Which type (Reflexive, Observational, Interactive, and Expository) of documentary do you think Nanook of the North best fits into? Can you identify any ways in which the film may be authored? What do you notice about the editing and cinematography of the film compared with the previous documentaries we have seen? The following questions should be attempted after completing the reading on the accompanying handout. Who was the documentary sponsored by and what did they do? What do you think inspired Flahertys desire to travel and document the lives and customs of remote communities? How Flaherty is considered to have broken the rules of expository cinema and stretched the boundaries of what can be considered a documentary?
