Rhetorical Analysis: Advertisement Critique (50 points)

Advertisements are one of the most prevalent sources of visual rhetoric in our lives. Advertisements come in all sort of forms, but all of them have the same basic intention: to sell us something. This analysis will be a sort of warm-up project for the written portion of your final project. You will write a critique an advertisement (print or video) in which you assess the advertisements effectiveness by analyzing context and the use of rhetorical appeals. This assignment will be due in class on April 5th.

Requirements
Your analysis will be ~600 words, double spaced, standard 12 pt font If you critique a video ad you will need to include a summary of the advertisement in your analysis. You may choose to also include a screencap. If you critique a print ad you will need to include the image in your paper. For screencaps and print ads you will need to use proper image formatting and a citation. In your analysis you must address the following: o The context of the information in the ad o The context of the ad in terms of other ads o The ads use of rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) o The ads use of visual rhetoric (this will likely be combined in some way with your discussion of appeals) o Whether or not the ad is effective
