SUBMISSION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY 29th May 2013 11.00 1.00pm
RATIONALE My Final Major Project was about demonstrating and building on the skills and passions in Graphic Design that I have developed over this course. I am a typographic based designer with a love for print, branding, packaging and layout. Any piece of design that focuses on the effect of colour and typography inspires me. I selected a range of briefs that would allow me to reflect my interests and to push my design and software skills even further by producing a body of work that was both visually strong and professional. It was towards the end of the last module that I realised that branding and packaging for the retail sector was a career path that I wanted to peruse after I leave University. For this reason, I chose two briefs that would give me the freedom to stretch my design ability and apply my skills to naming, branding and packaging two different food products. Another of the briefs I chose was to redesign the identity for a Deli shop; developing my branding and packaging skills one step further and designing an identity that would applied to all aspects of the Deli and its products. As well as packaging, I have a love for type and layout, so another brief I chose was a collaboration with a Photography student. This brief allowed me to further my skills in branding, typography and it also provided me with the opportunity incorporate photograph with typography skills. For this brief I designed a range of publications that would showcase the students work in a professional format. BLOG. e-fairbank1013-fmp.blogspot.co.uk Staff Use

THE POWER OF PRINT AND PACKAGING

THE POWER OF PRINT & PAKCAGING I designed an A4 publication that featured a range of print based projects that have informed and inspired my design practice development. I used this publication to explore the various techniques that designers use to design a piece of print that catches the target audiences attention. I categorised the projects into areas of design that contribute and affect the strength of the design outcome and organised the book accordingly. Over the last few months I have been collecting a large range of print based projects from specific design studios, individual designers work and also designs that have just simply caught my attention. The aim of this publication was to demonstrate the importance of packaging and how the power of a printed design can make or break a brand and product. BELLA RAE PHOTOGRAPHY This was a collaborative brief and I chose it because gave me the opportunity to combine my type and layout skills with range of a third year photography at Manchester Art School. The focus of the brief was to design her identity apply this to a range of publications and promotional design that showcased her work. This brief took a lot longer than expected because there were numerous setbacks with photography shoots and being cancelled. I spent around six weeks on this brief, on and off, picking it up again when Bella has succeeded with another shoot and I had more material to work with. The branding took a week, and the actual design and layout of the publication also too longer than I expected. Originally the brief was to design one publication, but I ended up extending it to three publications, one of which was a 28 page spread of Bellas portfolio which ended up being the strongest of all the publications. BRIEF 3

MARINAS PIES This was a print based investigation to develop a brand identity that could be applied to a range of pie packaging and take away pie packaging. The focus of this brief was on the impact of the stock choice and keep the overall design and typography and production costs to a minimum. Each pie flavour is identified by a line vector of one of the ingredients e.g ham. I chose this brief because it tested my normal design strategy and style as it made me focus more on creating a minimal packaging design rather than one with an overpower combinations of colour.

BRIEF 4

YOGPOTS (YOGHURT BRANDING) This brief focused on the development and design of a new brand that could be applied to a range of high quality yoghurts. This brief gave me the opportunity to create a product and name from scratch, then packaging and promote it as well as being able to use bright colour as the main method of attraction. This brief took around 5 weeks, the logo development continually developed over two weeks and the packaging and promotional part took a bit longer than expected but I am please with how the design range has turned out. CQF Deli Rebrand This was a print and digital based investigation into the application of a new brand identity across a range of products for the local village shop. I chose this brief as it would help me to develop my branding skills and create an identity that was powerful but kept the actual packaging to a minimum. Another focus of this brief was to redesign the website and make it more functional, an area of design that I have not focused on as much previously. I took around five weeks for this brief. The brief took around 4 weeks. The logo changed half way through applying the identity to a range of products and business cards. I am very pleased with the new logo and new brand identity, it is smart, sophisticated and still reflects the deli ethos.

Additional Comments Brief 2: DISCONTINUED Untapped Music Label: Branding & Packaging I decided to discontinue this brief and focus on extending my other briefs. At the end of the last module I wanted to design packaging for both electronic music and food / drink, however as my briefs developed I realised design for music was not something I was very interested in and instead I focused my attention to food and retail packaging. Brief 4: In my original statement of intent I wrote that this brief was to brand and package a coffee range. After going on a studio visit to Big Fish, London and learning more about their branding and packaging of Gu Puds, I wanted to use a brief to focus on this studios work and apply my branding and packaging skills to a desert range and using Gu as inspiration, Signed Date
