IMS OVERVIEW

IMS stands for IP Multimedia Subsystem It is an evolution to NGN of mobile networks defined by 3GPP in Rel5

IP Network

SIP

IMS defines a generic architecture for offering IP based multimedia services on mobile networks. IMS is using SIP - Session Initiation Protocol from IETF - Internet Engineering Task Force as the main control protocol IMS is one of the key parts of the convergence of the mobile and wire-line communication

Why IMS?
Operator perspective Common foundation for fixed, mobile and enterprise services
Cost effective and quick introduction of new innovative services.

Secure interoperability
Critical for mass-market, person-to-person services. Multi-vendor integration through standardized architecture. Solution also when roaming

Keeps charging relation with user

Adds flexible charging possibilities; off- and online, volume, time, per event, A-party pays, B-Party pays etc.

IMS - A cornerstone for convergence

4

Why IMS?
End-user perspective
New, exciting services and enhancements of existing services
Unique services in flexible combinations of voice, text, images, video, games etc. During telephony call being able to share pictures, video and other media.

Same services available regardless of terminal and access type

Services presented to fit terminal and access situation and capabilities.

Ease of use
See in advance who you can contact and how.

Security
Safe to use services. Once authenticated, all IMS services subscribed to can be accessed.

IMS offers a richer user experience

5

What is the consumer experience?

Enabling multimedia communication between people

A new communication style enabled by IMS

(P)roxy-CSCF [Call Session Control Function] issues ENUM service discovery query to on-site or hosted ENUM DNS server for a SIP-URI of the destination CMS. P-CSCF resolves host name within SIP URI using on-site or hosted private DNS infrastructure. S-CSCF sends SIP Invite to destination (I)nterrogating-CSCF. Destination I-CSCF queries Home Subscriber Server to get address of Destination S-CSCF. I-CSCF proxies Invite to destination S-CSCF. Standard SIP/SDP session negotiation follows

Summary
Convergence is different in different places. Convergence will be implemented in three dimensions User Services, Devices and Network. IMS is the cornerstone for convergence. IMS is based on mature and globally accepted standards. Key IMS benefit is horizontalization effect across applications and access technologies. It enables operators to launch new services with fast time to market Comprehensive activities ongoing to secure end to end solution including terminals The evolution starting point, requirements and need are unique for each Operator/Service Provider.
