We Need New People, New Ideas Says Prasad

A businessman, who was a victim of the 2000 coup, says Fiji needs new politicians and new ideas to take the country forward. Rajendra Prasad, the owner of Rajahs Supermarket and Bakery at Korovou, Tailevu, says politicians should not cause divisions among people by using racial and land issues in their manifestos for next years elections. Mr Prasad, 53, born and bred in Korovou, says race and land agendas in past elections threw Fiji into turmoil and threatened the lives of people in Korovou in 2000. Our properties were taken over. We were threatened. We were told that our shops would be burnt and everyone was frightened. This is because there was racial divide and land issues involved in politics, he said. We need new politicians to come up with new ideas. They have to come up with new developments that can help people. They have to give people choices. There should be no more race and land issues discussed in the elections because it will divide the people. Mr Prasad returned to Fiji in 1998 after working in Australia for 18 years. He was educated at Namalata District School, Tailevu North College and then Queen Victoria School. He studied at the Fiji Institute of Technologys Hotel and Catering School. Then he worked for a year at the Tradewinds Hotel, now known as the Novotel Lami Suva hotel. I want to see changes because I worked hard to reach where I am today. Some of us are poor but we worked hard. My parents were paid twentydollars collectively a week to milk cows. We were very poor but they worked hard. People in politics should think of everyone instead of their own interests.

A Fijian girl living in Australia has been selected as one of the New South Wales state finalist for this year's Miss World Australia pageant. Veniana Natekuru who was scouted by the Miss World Organisation for Miss World Australia last year in December told the reporter she was surprised and never imagined that she would be part of such a big pageant. I took up the offer because I wanted to challenge myself in a way that while I'm learning from this experience I am also helping those who are less fortunate than I am, Natekuru said. The Ra lady said she was a bit skeptical about accepting the offer since she is still a full time University student doing two degrees however she was able to motivate herself that she would be able to do it. Some of the things I like to highlight during the pageant is to organise my outreach program for the rural Aboriginal communities. Seeing how they live their lives and how the Australian Government is helping to aid in better health awareness in their community as well as the promotion

of better literacy skills program for indigenous students. I will also be helping the Variety Children First, (a charity for sick children in Australia) with their upcoming red carpet event, which is also one of Miss World Australia's partner Charity. Natekuru said for those aspiring to be part of similar pageant should Put God first and believe in yourself. That's the only thing that drives me to do better than yesterday. There will be a fair amount of criticism and negativity but don't let that blind you from archiving your goals. As a colored young woman competing in a country which I have come to call home, that is what comes with the package. You'll just have to learn to turn whatever negativity that comes your way into something positive. And that is what I am doing right now. At the end of the day, what you accomplish in life determines you for who you are. Natekuru also hopes to return to Fiji one day to open up a business and support young girls wishing to enter nursing schools.

Fijicare Launches New System

AN insurance company has eased the burden of manual filing for members by installing the latest information technology system. FijiCare Insurance Limited nonexecutive chairman Phillip Thomas said the software was a symbolic cooperation between Fiji and India. Mr Thomas said FijiCare looked for various alternatives and could have sourced the traditional software from Europe but the charge was three times what they could get from India. He said the system was worth $250,000. "The E-Meditek system beats other competitors from European countries," he said. The company's IT system was created by E-Meditek Technologies the leading Indian medical claims third party administrator. Patients at FijiCare's medical centre could now find their cases administered by the same error-free and performing software. "It is a key element of the success of the insurance company to have an integrated data management in particular for something specialised for main class of business. "In the case of FijiCare, the main class business continues to be health insurance." Once the system was working smoothly, Mr Thomas said FijiCare doctors working on a capitalisation basis would be asked to adopt the webbased software. He said the company would assist as far as installation and staff training were concerned. The software would enable company doctors to have online access to patient records.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimaramas visit to China this week highlights the strengthening of close ties between the two countries, and recognises the rising importance of Fiji as a regional leader in the Pacific. The Prime Minister left for Beijing and is scheduled to hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. The visit to Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese leadership precedes a state visit to Moscow next month

for a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin. These meetings, along with Fijis current leadership of the Melanesian Spearhead Group, the G77 and the International Sugar Organisation, underline Fijis robust foreign policy, aligned with other Pacific island nations, focusing on new opportunities beyond its traditional regional partners. He returns this weekend to chair a meeting of the International Sugar Organisation next week in Nadi.

Three Jailed For Stealing

FORMER employees of MH Homemaker in Sigatoka have been jailed for stealing items worth more than $2000 from the retail store earlier this year. Appearing before Magistrate Siromi Dokonivalu Turaga, Reuben Dean and Vinal Vinesh Prasad admitted to stealing a flat screen TV and a microwave oven from MH Homemaker in Sigatoka. The items were valued at more than $2618. The two were sentenced to 20 months and 18 months respectively. Also facing the full brunt of the law were Shavneel Chand Sen and Pranilla Singh who were both charged with receiving stolen property. According to police prosecution, Shavneel and Pranilla were both handed 12-month custodial terms. Pranilla was also charged with one count of giving false information to a public servant. She has been imposed with a further 10 months concurrent to her sentence delivered by the court.

PHARMACIES nationwide have been warned against selling expired medicines which may compromise consumers' health and safety. The warning follows complaints received at the consumer council's Lautoka office. One consumer purchased a bottle of 125mg of Amoxil on May 12 worth $9.95 for his three-month-old baby; the medicine had expired in February. Council CEO Premila Kumar said despite recent efforts to implement stronger laws and regulations in the pharmaceutical sector, some pharmacists continued to engage in bad practices. Mrs Kumar said the complainant was lucky to have had the foresight to read the expiry date before giving the expired medicine to his baby. "While the pharmacy had provided replacement medicine, refunded the cost of the expired Amoxil and compensated travel costs, there is no excuse for pharmacies to be selling expired medicines," Mrs Kumar said.

Approval has been given by the Attorney-General and Minister for Public Enterprises for a bonus payout for Airports Fiji Limited staff. This has been confirmed by the chairman of Airports Fiji, Faiz Khan. The bonus would be for the financial year ending December 31, 2010. In a letter to Mr Khan, Mr SayedKhaiyum stated: Following

Airports Fiji Staff To Receive Bonus

She said the council was concerned that despite widespread publicity on its report Prices and Practices: Pharmaceutical Survey 2010 and consequent action by policymakers to update and strengthen laws and regulations, there continued to be noncompliance in the sector. "It appears consumers continue to face potential risks in the pharmaceutical sector. In this case the medication was still on the shelf although it expired three months ago. "The council urges the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services to take stronger enforcement and monitoring action to curb such bad and dangerous practices." Mrs Kumar reminded pharmacies and pharmacists that there was absolutely no room for any laxity because people's lives were at stake. "Consumers are also advised to check the expiry dates on medication to avoid any mishap." Health Ministry spokesman Shalvin Deo said the ministry would issue a statement on the matter.

consultations with the Prime Minister, approval is hereby granted for the bonus payout in the sum of $377,734. This will be divided and paid to those eligible. Mr Khan stressed their workforce is an important stakeholder. I am glad that we can continue to build strong two way alliances, he said.

An employee of the Ministry of Sugar has been caught spreading false information to discredit the good work made by the Government in the sugar industry. This was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary for Sugar, LieutenantColonel Manasa Vaniqi. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said: The sad thing is the worker was telling people that all the good work done in the Ministry of Sugar was that of the Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry. This is serious, especially when the employee knows of all the positive developments the Government has done for the Fiji Sugar Corporation. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi confirmed the Ministry does not like to be engaged in politics, as past politicians had politicised the sugar industry simply for their personal benefit. He is looking into the matter, but he could not say what action the Ministry would take. FRUITS OF FAIRTRADE INITIATIVE Last week, Prime Minister Commodore

Voreqe Bainimarama handed pension cheques to 380 people over the age of 70 under the Rarawai/Penang Cane Producers Association. The suspect was quick to claim that this was not a Government initiative. In presenting the cheques the Prime Minister said: This money comes from a fund set up under the Fairtrade initiative. This initiative was allowed and supported by my Government and in conjunction with the Fiji Sugar Corporation and Tate and Lyle. Today we see one of the results of this collaboration. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said the National Farmers Union, an arm of the Fiji Labour Party, had been against the Fairtrade initiative. But now that the farmers were benefiting, it had tried to claim that this was their initiative, he said. Lieutenant-Colonel Vaniqi said some workers in the Ministry were supporters of the political party. He has urged them to be apolitical when carrying out their works. The sugar industry is now apolitical and there is no room for politicians.

Fijis Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has acknowledged governments efforts in lifting restrictions that were recently placed upon political parties in the country. There have been no restrictions for now and we are happy that we are have been allowed to set up our branches in the four divisions without any opposition from government, SODELPA general secretary Pio Tabaiwalu told the reporter. Government has given us freedom to do our normal operations and we hope it will continue to be this way, Tabaiwalu said. He said at the moment everything is running smoothly in the party and they will be meeting to discuss ways in which they would be able to interact with other members. This meeting will be just to plan out what we have to do but our main meeting will be held on June 20 and major decisions are expected to be made during the meeting. We are also looking at appointing a new party leader but we will be waiting for the courts decisions regarding Qarases appeal before we can make any changes. Meanwhile in an earlier interview with New Zealands Radio Tarana Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said government was not monitoring any political parties however they are just looking out for the security of the country.

Government has commended the efforts of the Ramakrishna Mission Fiji and the Swami Vivekananda College for encouraging literacy development after they distributed library books and toys to 32 primary schools, kindergartens at the Nadi Council Library this month. The function for this event was held at the Swami Vivekananda College where the Ministry of Educations Western Officer Mr Albert Wise officiated on behalf of government. I sincerely thank the Ramakrishna Mission for the kind donation to the

Ministry of Education. For schools who will be beneficiaries of the donation, the books that you are receiving today must be fully utilized and not left to collect dust on the shelves, said Mr Wise. This development was possible through the Literacy Project which was founded by the Ramakrishna Mission Fiji and designed to promote literacy in the country. The Project which was launched in 2011 will see library books and encyclopedias distributed to 26 primary and secondary schools, 5 kindergartens and a vocational center.

Shipping Affects Export Potential

IRREGULAR shipping service between Viti Levu and Rotuma and high freight costs is affecting Rotuma's ability to access the export and domestic markets in Suva and Lautoka. Rotuma Export and Marketing Company Limited executive chairman Hiagi Foraete said irregular shipping affected travel, and the import and export of goods and services to and from the island. Commissioner Eastern Lieutenant Colonel Netani Rika admitted that a major issue for the Eastern Division, which included Rotuma during the past three months was shipping. Lt-Col Rika said shipping had always been a major issue for maritime islands for many years. "We have noticed and people inform us that shops are always empty and food supplies are in short supply because of the problem," Lt-Col Rika said. "As well, people not being able to be transported to the urban areas on time was always an issue raised during the meeting or it was the other way around, people being stranded in Suva not being able to return to the islands." He said it was important for members of the provincial development boards to discuss the matter further because of its importance, adding that it was not easy trying to solve the shipping issue in the maritime areas.

The first of the four Air Pacific Boeing 737 aircraft repainted in the new Fiji Airways livery, arrived back in the country. The repainted Boeing 737-800 has already resumed services as per its normal schedule. Air Pacific acting chief executive, Aubrey Swift, last week had announced a second Boeing 737 aircraft will return from being repainted and refreshed early next month. Rebranding June will surely be a happening month for Air Pacific as they are also expected to officially become Fiji Airways after eighteen months of preparations. Mr Swift indicated this as a defining moment in the airlines history. The date for the June rebranding is yet to be confirmed, however, it is believed to be held either in mid-June or later in June. Also in early June, Air Pacific will give its biggest market, Sydney, a sneak peek of the Fiji Airways A330 Airbus.

Fiji can conduct democratic elections in 2014 and manage things on its own, says French ambassador to Fiji Gilles Montagnier. If they will request for assistance during elections then we will be able to send observers but they have not so we will not interfere, Montagnier said. They are also not a third world country so they are capable of doings on their own, he said. Meanwhile Montagnier visited the French vessel, le de R, at the Port of Suva to inspect the vessel. The le de R which is currently in Fiji is preparing to roll-out the 837km fibre optic submarine cable system that is intended to help increase Tonga's broadband internet access. The cable is intended to help increase Tongas broadband internet access and affordability, as well as to give them access to the Southern Cross Cable, the main trans-Pacific system that connects Fiji, Australia and New Zealand to the United States of America. After the recent delivery to Fiji of

A new home owner in the Western Division praised the determination by Government to improve lives of ordinary Fijians by providing new homes. For Nadi farmer, Arvind Singh, a new home will mean better life for his family. This after the head of government, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama opened the familys new home at Votualevu in Nadi after requesting government for housing assistance. "I want to thank you, Prime Minister, for thinking of us and never forgetting about our problems," Mr Singh said.

Prime Minister Opens New Homes

"My family will have a better life because of this new home, especially for my children. PM Bainimarama opened the new home at the farming settlement and urged the community to work closely with each other. The head of government also opened several other homes that have been fully funded by Government. The new homes are part of Governments commitment to assisting those individuals and families whose homes were fully destroyed during Tropical Cyclone Evan late last year.

MEMBERS of the public will soon have access to reading materials that was given to the government from New Zealand last week. National Archives and Library Services permanent secretary Sharon Smith-Johns received a gift of $20,000 worth of books by Ms Jill Bess, a New Zealand public librarian. "It is an extremely generous offer from an individual to be able to give Fiji all these books," Ms Smith-Johns said. "We know through library services how much these books will be appreciated out there in the rural areas and outer

islands." "This is one of the main aims of government to raise literacy levels for our people and we want to make books like these available to every Fijian citizen, especially in rural areas." Ms Smith-Johns said the 8000 library books sent by Ms Bess were a result of contributions by libraries and publishers like Geckos Press, Random House New Zealand and the United Book Distributors. "This is Ms Bess' second donation consignment to Fiji. The first one was last year for the Suva City Library."

China Ready To Assist Fiji In Development

A WOMAN who threatened to kill her sister was sentenced by the Magistrates Court in Suva. Lavenia Vugona was sentenced to two months imprisonment and handed a two-month suspended term which would run concurrent to each other. She was also issued a restraining order. Vugona appeared before Magistrate Alipate Mataitini charged with theft and absconding bail. The court heard she threatened to kill her sister with a cane knife after she was confronted for stealing. She only dropped the knife when she heard her sister's children crying. Mr Mataitini issued a domestic restraining order against her and told not to enter her sister's home.

Sister Jailed

Vugona, who waived her right to counsel, pleaded not guilty to theft but admitted the latter charge. The court, however, found her guilty of both charges and imposed two-month terms for each charge, with one of them suspended, and ordered they be served concurrently. The 32-year-old woman had said in mitigation she still lived with her parents and was unemployed. The court heard she had sought forgiveness but her sister was not present in court on that day. It further heard Vugona has four sisters and a brother, and although they were all married and had moved out of their parents' house, their children still lived with her and her parents.

A 53-year-old truck driver from Labasa has been jailed for eight years by the High Court in Labasa for rape. The court heard that Mohammed Ibrahim and the victim had an agreement that she would provide sexual services for him in return for gifts of money, which he had to pay into her bank account or give her cash when meeting. The court then heard that on the day in which they met they had a dispute over whether to eat the food he had brought first and then sex, or to have sex then eat however the victim wanted to eat first but he insisted that they have sex immediately and then raped her after she pleaded with him not to. The court also heard that the man is

divorced, has 3 adult children and he cares for his 75 year old mother who lives in Nadi. The man pleaded with the court for leniency considering that this was "date rape" and happened within a commercial sexual relationship. In handing down his sentence Justice Paul Madigan said there is an element of breach of trust and a commercial agreement for sexual services having been made between them does not allow the driver an absolute and unconditional right to have sex at any time. Every sex worker has the right to say no or in this case not now, Justice Madigan said. The man will be eligible for parole after six years.

PDP Registers For 2014 Elections

The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCA) and the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) will issue a joint identity card effective July, 2013. The announcement was made by chairman of both institutions Ajith Kodagoda. Kodagoda said the joint ID card has been primarily designed for convenience to benefit taxpayers and FNPF members. The card will ease current requirements needed for most financial and legal transactions that include the demand for TIN letters and FNPF Membership cards. From July, all you need to produce is this card, he said. Kodagoda said that an added major advantage is that the card can be issued by both organisations. The Fiji public can obtain this card from either FNPF or FRCA, instead of the current practice where we have to visit both FNPF and FRCA. FRCA will phase out the issuing of TIN letters. TIN letters are primary source document that is a prerequisite required by the banks, the Land Transport Authority or Water Authority of Fiji. FNPF will eventually phase out its current cards and it will soon issue this card for new members, Kodagoda added. FRCA and FNPF will have a joint

FNPF, FRCA To Issue Joint ID Card

database, which will only contain the information required by both parties for the issue of the identity card. FNPF has already identified 200,000 members who also have tax identification numbers. FRCA has over 700,000 taxpayers in its database. And the database would only be accessed by authorised persons of both organisations. Such arrangements are already being done in countries such as Singapore where the SingPass or national identity card is being used to access their pension fund as well as tax services, Kodagoda said. In the United States, they use the Social Security Number as their national ID for all services while in New Zealand, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) number is used to access online Kiwi Saver (pension fund) services. The project will be implemented in phases and will be piloted with a selected target groups. It is envisaged that the card will be used as a smart card similar to ATM cards. I would like to assure taxpayers and FNPF members that both organizations will continue to pursue value-adding products and services that will ultimately benefit our members," he concluded.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has become the fourth party to register under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree for the 2014 Fiji elections. The party was successfully registered by the Registrar of Political Parties Mohammed Saneem. Saneem said that after the irregularities in the party's membership list were discounted, he was satisfied that the party's application met the minimum requirements of the Decree. As of today, the PDP will be able to operate, function, represent and hold itself out to be a political party, he said. The PDP applied for registration with 6,808 member signatures, 539 of which were discounted as anomalies. Total remaining, 6,269. The party now has thirty days to

submit to the Registrar a written declaration giving details of all assets and expenditure including, all contributions, donations or pledges of contributions or donations, whether in cash or in kind, made or to be made to the initial assets of the political party. Party officials and party candidates will also have to disclose personal incomes, assets, business connections, directorships, gifts, and liabilities. Former FLP member and Minister for Commerce and Industry in the multiparty cabinet in 2006, Adi Sivia Qoro is leading the party as its president while former cabinet minister Poseci Bune has been listed as its secretary. National Federation Party, Fiji Labour Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party were successfully registered under the Decree earlier this month.

Mistakes made with the relocation of the Banaban people to Rabi in Fiji must never be repeated, Pacific climate change and relocation experts heard in the Cook Islands. Kiribati delegate Penilesi Alofa said the Banaban people had undergone a traumatic experience and two relocations immediately after World War II. The Banaban people were moved to camps by the Japanese during the war some to Kosrae in the Marshall Islands, others to Tarawa in Kiribati and in 1945 they were moved to Rabi, Ms Alofa said. They were not consulted the British just moved them to somewhere colder and wetter than Banabans home of Ocean Island. No other community should have to undergo this kind of experience. Alofa was speaking at the Nansen Initiative-Secretariat Pacific Regional Consultation on Human Mobility, natural Disasters and Climate Change being held in the Cook Islands. Alofa said the Banabans had been weakened during their forced labour in Japanese camps and the quick move to Rabi dramatically affected their health. Stories are told of people dying every

week in the first few months on Rabi because they were sick, had little shelter, supplies were inadequate and they were not strong, Ms Alofa said. Rabi was bought by the British colonial government from European settlers to whom it was sold by Tui Cakau, Goleanavanua in the late 1800s. The original inhabitants of the island now live in Lovonivonu on Taveuni. Alofa said the people now living in Rabi were deeply grateful to the people of Fiji for accepting them but the island could never be home for some islanders who considered themselves to be Banaban. Our home is Banaba and even though we have been accepted in Fiji we still feel that we are visitors and not indigenous, she said. We still have to buy fishing rights. Its only right that we should do so but these are things that must be considered when moving people around the Pacific. The summit supported by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme is the first in a series of international summits. These are organised by the Nansen Initiative which is a joint effort of the Norwegian and Swiss governments.

Sugar Funds
BY the end of this year, the European Union will have committed $136million in direct assistance to sugarcane farmers in the country. This was highlighted by the head of operations for the EU delegation for the Pacific, Renato Mele, while closing the International Workshop on Nobilisation of Erianthus in Nadi. Mr Mele said reforms to the EU's sugar protocol and removal of guaranteed quota and stable price had serious repercussions to farmers and the local industry. In addition to this, he said the EU also had limitations in delivering further assistance because of the application of Article 96 of the Cotonou agreement, following political issues in 2009. "Nonetheless, since 2006, the EU has managed to provide direct assistance to sugarcane farmers, focusing on activities that would deliver useful impacts for reducing poverty of the most affected," he said. Mr Mele said the assistance was made to relevant institutions, growers and their dependents and channeled through non-governmental organisations and regional and international bodies. One of the biggest beneficiaries has been the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF). "An important share of this assistance is aimed at supporting research, which we consider a major factor that may contribute to the rebound of the sugar industry. "The EU's direct support to the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji will reach a total of $11.5million by the end of 2013." Perhaps the biggest benefit to SRIF was the funding provided by the EU that saw the research centre relocated from Lautoka City to Drasa. "This was for the research centre

to become closer to the fields and experimental trials. "From 2011 to 2013, the EU granted additional funding to the institute, to pursue applied research in breeding, and to find ways to promote its financial sustainability as an independent research agency. Mr Mele said the significant reduction in cane production in recent times was also an area being addressed by EU funded programs. "From 341,000 tonnes in 2000, Fiji's sugar production has fallen to 167,000 tonnes in 2012. "The future of the Fijian sugar industry is heavily dependent on the introduction of new high-yield varieties and diseasefree planting material at farm level. "A specific component of the program was prepared to develop a seed multiplication system in Fiji so that by 2016, sufficient quantities of improved and certified varieties can be replanted with a target of 4000 hectares per year." SRIF CEO Jai Gawander said the institute was fortunate to have considerable support from the EU. "We have to acknowledge their support in terms of programs, infrastructure and training," Mr Gawander said. "As testimony to the EU's support, we now have a lot of young sugarcane researchers that have been sent for training and will also be contributing research papers at international forums this year." The aid given by the EU to Fiji is part of a 1.25billion Euro ($F2.97b) package for 18 African Caribbean Pacific sugar-producing countries affected by reforms to the sugar protocol. This assistance is additional to the EU's Accompanying Measures for the Sugar Protocol program which is currently in progress in the country.

Bees Rake In Millions

FIJI'S beekeeping and honey industry could rake in a gross income of more than $21million annually if it operates to its full capacity of 50,000 beehives. Ministry of Agriculture honey industry national co-ordinator Kamal Prasad said each beehive produced 25 kilograms of honey and at the present retail price of $17.50 per kilo, honey could generate more than $20m. "There are 1000 beekeepers around the country and we are operating about 8000 beehives. "Our honey production last year was almost 200 tonnes and this year, we are targeting more than 200 tonnes," he said. "The industry was affected by Tropical Cyclone Evan where production levels went down. "However, this year there has been good honey flow in most areas and we look forward to full fledge of harvesting from October to December that is the peak honey flow season in the country. "We are also opening doors for the export market in Australia, the United States and later to other Asian countries there are a lot of people showing interest to invest in the honey industry." Mr Prasad said they were focused on opening new areas for beekeeping like Yalavou and Tilivalevu in Sigatoka. He said there were 6000 beehives and 600 farmers on Viti Levu while the remaining 2000 beehives and 400 farmers were distributed on small island atolls. "A farmer can earn $250-300 on average from one beehive during the seasonal flow on an annual basis. "The industry contributes around 2-2.5 per cent towards the national gross domestic product," he said. In a statement this week, Fiji Beekeepers Association president John Lewis said there was great potential for the industry to grow. He said members of the association were producing majority of the country's honey. "The association accounted for more than 80 per cent of the 220 tonnes of honey produced last year in the country 2012 was a slightly below average production year," he said. "To achieve its growth, potential beekeeper training needs to be expanded. Government has very effective basic beekeeping training programs. "We have worked closely with government at selected workshops and the association itself holds seminars and assists with groups of beekeepers, but funding is limited so much more needs to be done," he said. He said contrary to popular belief, beekeeping was not easy-money and successful beekeeping required commitment and dedication.

Increase In Kava Export

FIJI earns $7-$8million annually from yaqona exports. And this number could soon increase if final paperwork was completed to increase exports per month to the US. Fiji exports yaqona to Fiji citizens in Australia, US, New Zealand and the UK. In a statement, Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) sales and marketing officer Alifereti Yaya said Fiji's kava exports could soon increase by 18,000 kilograms per month to the US once final paper was completed by AMA and an American company. He said they were talking to an American investor who was arranging his company before finalising the deal. "We have been talking to this US company that wants to start importing Fijian kava for the US market," he said. "Currently, we are exporting kava to the US but should this deal follow through, we could see our kava exports go up by 18,000kgs per month that is kava which is not pounded." Exported kava to those countries was for consumption while some used it as research for pharmaceutical needs. "Right now, Fiji kava is being exported for drinking. Only two kilos are allowed by travellers or visitors to Australia per person because of the ban it placed earlier while British Army, rugby players and other people in the United Kingdom take kava with them or have kava sent to them by friends and family members." Fiji Kava Council chairman Rupeni Koroi said earlier Fiji's economy would be boosted if kava exports were opened up for pharmaceutical or medical purposes. He said the benefits would flow down to the farmers and communities.

Former Post Fiji executives Peni Mau and Dhirendra Patel were acquitted by the High Court in Suva. The two who were found not guilty by assessors were facing abuse of office and extortion charges. In handing down his judgment Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam said he has no reason to disagree with the

Government has managed to create 5571 jobs in the Northern Division through a Look North Policy rural project This is the Northern Development Programme (NDP) which has funded 1582 projects since January 1, 2008. They included agriculture and fishing. Project manager, Waisale Tuidama said until the end of last year, they had spent $9.8 million. He said the spin-offs had been great. In terms of employment, the programme has created 5571 employment to rural areas. That contributes to eight per cent employment to Vanua Levu that is in the informal sector employment, meaning work to cane cutters, farm labourers and fishing crews, Mr Tuidama said. The NDP has provided livelihoods to 27,855 people of Vanua Levu. That is about 19.2 per cent of the population of Vanua Levu that has benefitted directly or indirectly from the Northern Development Programme. Of the total project 48 per cent are accounted for Macuata, 20 per cent in Bua and 32 per cent in Cakaudrove, Mr Tuidama said. The projects are mostly resource-based and related to land, forestry and fishing.

5571 Jobs Created In 4 Years

Major projects in the community are agricultural like dalo and yaqona farming, livestock, fishing projects, rice farming and village projects like canteens and other small businesses. It is to help recipients set up businesses in villages, settlements, and outer islands. He said majority of the dalo farming were in Taveuni, Bua, and fishing in Udu, Macuata Coast, Bua and Cakaudrove. Another new project is bee farming. Government has identified depressed rural economic zone where Government and NDP will promote small scale businesses for income generation projects. It will create about eight per cent employment in Vanua Levu. The program is meeting its objectives of providing employment, providing livelihood and promoting small businesses in the North. Our main focus now is on import substitution like rice, livestock and poultry. NDP is trying to promote fish processing, poultry for supply of eggs and meat (chicken) this year. He said people had benefitted from the programme through improvements of their lives and living conditions.

Accident Suspect Faces Charges

Vodafone Fiji is working on ensuring its dealers in the North maximise service opportunities for customers. Vodafone dealers started a three-day workshop at the North Pole conference room with frontline trainer Usaia Tukana. The workshop is aimed to help Vodafone dealers improve their interactions with customers and to have the same knowledge of information that Vodafone has of the product they sell, Mr Tukana said. The main focus on this training is on prepaid service. The training gave participants the opportunity to improve on their critical

skills and dealing with customers on solving their problems rather than going to a Vodafone outlet. It also helped participants who were struggling to find that middle ground between being too aggressive and too passive, and how to counter problems on mobiles, said Mr Tukana. Mr Tukana added that the participants would learn about the products they sold, and how to handle problems on mobile phones. At the end of the training, the participants will be given certificates, he said. The participants were dealers from Courts Fiji, Vodafone and Morris Hedstrom.

Murder Suspect Denied Bail

THE 20-year-old man accused of murdering a 39-year-old man of Malevu Village, Sigatoka has been refused bail. Ronald Dulare Singh was refused bail by Magistrate Siromi Dokonivalu Turaga while appearing at the Sigatoka Magistrates Court. Mr Singh is charged with one count of murder following the death of Manasa Nawakula on May 12. According to West divisional police prosecutor ASP Anil Prasad, the accused would be remanded in custody. He said the matter had been transferred to the High Court in Lautoka and would be recalled on June 5. According to the court, Mr Singh was drinking with the deceased on the eve of Mother's Day in front of the Warwick Fiji Resort prior to the incident.

An unexpected fire broke out Monday morning on an old shipping vessel at the Government Shipyard in Walu Bay, Suva. The National Fire Authority prevented the fire from spreading. The authority confirmed that they received the fire emergency call at 9.46am and immediately responded. Upon arrival at 9.55am firefighters saw thick smoke and flames coming out of the partly dismantled vessel which was berthed at the Government Shipyard. Firefighters were able to fully extinguish the fire and stopped the fire from spreading to nearby vessels also berthed at the Government Shipyard. Authority chief executive officer John OConnor, who was also at the site,

expressed his concern on this ship fire incident. Such fires are a threat to the nearby vessels and also to the environment because of the oil and flammable liquid contained in the ship, Mr OConnor said. The ship was being dismantled for scrap metal, he said. Mr OConnor is urging vessel owners to ensure they have proper work permit systems in place to carry out welding in such confined spaces. Employees undertaking welding works must be properly trained and they must recognise the risks associated in welding in confined spaces, he said. The authority is currently investigating the exact cause of the fire.

Accountants from around the country will converge at the Sheraton Fiji Resort from June 7 to June 9 for the 41st Fiji Institute of Accountants Congress. The theme for this years congress is The Challenge of Change. President of the Fiji Institute of Accountants, Cama Raimuria, stressed the need to embrace changes given the initiatives currently under way. Fiji will soon be having a new constitution. New company laws are about to be introduce and many other changes affecting the business community are happening, he said. Any business in todays fast-moving environment that is looking for the pace of change to slow is likely to be sorely disappointed. In fact, businesses should embrace change. Change is important for any organization because, without change, businesses would likely lose their competitive edge, he said. Westpac, Vodafone sponsorship Westpac Banking Corporation, with their partners, Vodafone Fiji, handed over their sponsorship cheque of $75,000 for the annual congress. The much-anticipated annual congress is well-attended by influential policymakers, business professionals, executives and members of the Fiji Institute of Accountants. Westpac Fiji general manager, Adrian Hughes, said: The congress provides a platform for dynamic and interesting presentations and discussions. This would assist decision-makers and business professionals plus it also provides an opportunity for relationship building within the corporate and business sector. Meanwhile, Vodafone Fiji financial controller, Elenoa Biukoto, stressed accountants today face far greater challenge to maintain their relevance. The accounting profession is not just about compliance with regulations and

historical reporting, she said. They are rather a proactive profession seeking out opportunities for growth, improvement and relevance. Mr Raimuria noted the sponsorship for this years event is by far the biggest ever to be received by the Institute in its 41 years of existence. That clearly demonstrates the Congress is of high value and still maintains its status as Fijis premier business forum, he said. Speakers Mr Raimuria said this years congress has an interesting line-up of speakers to deliver on a mix of business and economic issues. We also have an equally good line-up of panelists to deliberate on some key issues, he said. Line-up of speakers Devadas Krishnadas The founder of Future Moves, Singapore and South East Asias first business foresight consultancy will deliver the keynote address on The challenge of Change. Ian Taruita Chief executive of Papua New Guineas National Superannuation Fund (NASFUND) and chairman of the Papua New Guinea Provident Fund. Corporal Qerewaqa also made an application for the case to be transferred to the High Court because the charge was of an indictable nature. He also objected to the accused being released on bail. The case has been adjourned to June 7 for first call in the High Court and the accused was further remanded in custody.

Corrections spokeswoman Ana Tudrau-Tamani said Mr Gade has been in custody since January 22, 1994 for a life sentence. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death is under way.

One of the four teenagers who was involved in a car accident in Laucala Beach last Friday night remains in critical condition, a source told the reporter. The accident claimed the life of a 39-year-old Brisbane woman. The dead Brisbane woman was travelling with four teenagers; two aged 14, and two aged 15 at the time of the accident. The Brisbane woman was born in Fiji and had moved to Australia 12 years ago. She had just arrived last Thursday with her teenage daughter to visit family members. Friends and colleagues of Mount Isa youth worker Sereana Pratap held a memorial ceremony to celebrate her life in Queensland, Australia. More than 50 people attended the

ceremony, including former colleagues from her time with Young People Ahead and most recently the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. According to the North West Star, Pastor Keith Christie led the ceremony where a balloon release was organised as a memorial. People were invited to release a balloon with a message. Pratap, 39, described as "the most beautiful spirit" died when the vehicle she was driving was hit by another car driven by a 26-year-old female. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at the CWM hospital while four teenage passengers, including a family member were admitted and discharged after treatment. The deceased was the wife of outgoing Mount Isa City Council chief executive Bhan Pratap.

THE new cane payment has not only brought delight to farmers but also high anticipation for more land leases for sugarcane farming, says Department of Lands director Mosese Tagicakibau. Mr Tagicakibau, who is in Vanua Levu for public consultation, said more people would be interested in sugarcane farming because of the new payment. "We expect a lot of interested people to visit us for land leases because of sugarcane farming and this is a good sign as land will be put to good use," he said. "We also expect people to approach us for vegetable and root crop farming, which will not only benefit them individually in terms of food security but also the economy. "We have seen that most people have occupied government lands without our concern for instance, lessees migrating overseas and leaving the land behind to relatives and friends to look after it for them. This is against the lease condition and we want people to take heed of this sort of practice to avoid penalties. "People have been urged to visit our office for more information in order to avoid misunderstandings." Alberta Truck's Oversized Load Blamed For Washington Bridge Collapse

Driver says pilot car never warned him that load was larger than the bridge The Alberta trucker who struck a steel beam precipitating a bridge collapse in Washington State was hauling an oversized load that prevented him from crossing the Skagit River Bridge safely, according to a U.S. transportation official. Deborah Hersman, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said 41-year-old William Scott was granted a permit for his oversize load a case shed for a drilling rig which listed the cargo as 4.85 metres in height. Scott told officials he measured his load multiple times along his route and was following a pilot truck whose driver was responsible for warning him, through a two-way radio, of any problems the oversized trailer might encounter. "The purpose of having a pilot car to travel ahead of the tractor trailer with this vertical clearance issue is to ensure the tractor trailer can pass safely," Hersman said. But Scott told officials the pilot driver never signaled him that crossing the bridge over the Skagit River would be a problem, even though the bridges lowest point only had a clearance of 4.45 metres. There are no signs describing the bridges vertical clearance, as signage is not required in Washington State unless the bridge has a clearance less than 4.39 metres. Scott told officials he had worked with the pilot truck company before, but it was the first time he worked with this particular driver. Concrete slid off girders "like icing sliding off of a cake" Three people were injured on Thursday when the bridge collapsed, sending two vehicles into the Skagit River near Mount Vernon on Interstate 5, a busy highway that connects Seattle to the Canadian border. Hersman said Scott "described hearing a boom and feeling contact in the vehicle" as he drove over the bridge. "From the bending and the buckling, the bridge is telling our investigators the story of where the failure originated and how it propagated through the span that dropped into the water," said Hersman, who told reporters multiple teams have been on site since Thursday to investigate the bridge structure. "You can see that the concrete section of that dropped span has slid off of its girders like icing sliding off of a cake. Its a floating bridge deck and it has completely slipped in certain sections right off of the deck." Regulators have dubbed the steel bridge, which was built in 1955, as a "fracture critical" structure, which can crumple when a single, vital component is compromised. Other large vehicles have struck the Skagit River Bridge before the collapse Thursday, Hersman noted. Bridge could be closed for months Hersman says teams will spend about a week inspecting the I-5 Bridge, interviewing the driver of the pilot truck, and examining maintenance documents and accident reports. Investigators will also be using a high tech 3-D video camera to review the scene and attempt to pinpoint where the bridge failure began. Officials say they are still working to find out whether the collapse was a fluke or a sign of bigger problems. "The results can be very catastrophic," Hersman said. "We're very fortunate in this situation." State and federal officials will work together on the investigation, said Hersman. They'll also be on the lookout for safety issues that could affect other bridges. In the meantime, motorists should not expect to drive on I-5 between Mount Vernon and Burlington for many weeks and possibly months, said Washington Transportation Department spokesman Bart Treece. About 71,000 vehicles use that stretch of highway every day. However, officials are looking for a temporary, pre-fabricated bridge to replace the 48-metre section that failed, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said. That option could be in place in weeks. Otherwise, it could be months before a replacement can be built, said Inslee, adding it will cost $15 million to repair the bridge.

Afghan Police Killed After Inviting Defectors Into Checkpoint For Dinner
Suspected Taliban militants killed seven police in southern Afghanistan after persuading the officers to invite them into their checkpoint for dinner. A total of 14 Afghan police and soldiers have died over the last two days as Taliban insurgents increase attacks as part of their annual "spring offensive" launched last month. The two attackers fled the police checkpoint after shooting the seven men in the province of Kandahar, a hotbed of the militant campaign that targets Afghan security forces and officials as well as US-led foreign forces. "Two men asked police to let them spend the night in their post. The police accepted and gave them food," Jawed Faisal, spokesman for the Kandahar provincial governor, said. "After dinner, the men grabbed the guns of the policemen and shot dead seven police and wounded one and fled." Ghorzang Afridi, a Kandahar police spokesman, said that the men escaped in a police jeep with several stolen weapons. "These men used to be police themselves but had abandoned their jobs, and at the post they said they wanted to join the police again," he said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. On Monday night, five Afghan soldiers were killed in the northern province of Badakhshan in a militant assault, the ministry of defence said, while two other soldiers were killed in an explosion in Kandahar on Tuesday. The national police and army are taking over the fight against the insurgents ahead of the withdrawal of 100,000 NATO combat troops by the end of next year, but concerns have been raised over their ability to impose security. Casualties among Afghan security forces have risen sharply in recent years as international coalition troops have begun to pull back and local personnel have taken over front-line duties.

A newborn baby has been rescued after being flushed down a toilet in a Chinese apartment building, according to state media reports. Residents in Jinhua, in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang, alerted firefighters after hearing the two-dayold baby crying in the fourth-floor squat lavatory. Attempts to pull him out failed, so rescuers sawed away a section of the pipe with the baby inside and took him to a local hospital. Firefighters and doctors spent nearly an hour taking the pipe apart piece by piece with pliers and saws, before the newborn was freed with its placenta still attached. From the time he was found until when he was taken out, the baby was stuck in the pipe for at least two hours. The 2.3 kilogram boy suffered cuts to his face and limbs and is now in a stable condition. Social media users vent fury at perpetrators The news triggered hundreds of thousands of comments on China's hugely popular social media site Weibo, with users expressing good wishes for the baby and fury at those who presumably abandoned him. "I can never accept or forgive the

"Can these people be called human beings? The animal to human ratio among the grown-ups is rising inexorably." Another user said watching the rescue left her distraught. will definitely be smooth." There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned often shortly after birth, a problem often attributed to young mothers unaware they were pregnant. Chinese babies born out of wedlock are sometimes also abandoned because of social and financial pressures, and baby girls are often unwanted in a society which puts greater value on boys. Mother will not be prosecuted as police say birth unexpected The mother will not be prosecuted, according to a local police official, who said the woman gave birth unexpectedly while in the lavatory. A police spokeswoman said the mother was in serious condition due to complications from the delivery, while authorities were still looking for the baby's father. The officer confirmed the 22-year-old woman, who is unmarried and had kept her pregnancy secret, will not be prosecuted. She refused to give further details. "Our investigations showed it was an accident," said the officer, who did not want to be named. The country's one-child policy can also mean heavy fines for couples who have more than one baby.

Barack Obama Offers Solace During Visit To Devastated Towns

United States President Barack Obama has offered solace and support to residents during a visit to Oklahoma to see the devastation caused by last week's tornado. The tornado was one of the most powerful in years, killing 24 people and injuring 377, damaging or destroying 1,200 homes and affecting an estimated 33,000 people, according to a recent update from officials. Mr Obama says the damage is hard to comprehend. "Whenever I come to an area that has been devastated by some natural disaster like this, I want to make sure that everybody understands I'm speaking on behalf of the entire country," he said as he stood in front of the wreckage of Plaza Towers Elementary School. "Everywhere, fellow Americans are praying with you, thinking about you and they want to help." The damage in Moore is estimated at anywhere between $2 billion and $5 billion and Mr Obama has promised long-term funding to help rebuild. He praised all of those who went out of their way to save people's lives. "From the forecasters who issued the warnings, to the first responders who dug through the rubble, to the teachers who shielded with their own bodies their students, Oklahomans have inspired us with their love and their courage and their fellowship," Mr Obama said. He also hailed those who have offered shelter for their neighbours whose homes were destroyed. "This is a strong community with strong character. There's no doubt they're going to bounce back. But they But Ms Fallin emphasised the tightknit community was also rallying together to move on. "We're resilient. There's already a big path of debris that's been moved around. People are gathering their stuff," she said. School graduations continue as scheduled Part of that process has included taking up the threads of ordinary life, including holding scheduled graduations. Three area high schools held ceremonies back-to-back at a local convention centre over the last weekend. Free caps and gowns were distributed to students who had lost their homes in the tornado. The US experiences three out of every four tornadoes in the world, but the one that hit last week was an unusually powerful EF-5 - the highest possible level - on the Enhanced Fujita scale and touched down with little advance notice. It followed roughly the same track as the 1999 twister, yet very few homes in Oklahoma - and neither of the stricken schools - had purpose-built storm shelters.

need help," he said. "Just like any of us would need help if we saw the kind of devastation that we're seeing here." Governor seeks help to streamline assistance Mr Obama was accompanied by Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administrator Craig Fugate and local officials. Ms Fallin said she was seeking help streamlining assistance to her battered state from FEMA. "What I need is the ability to get through red tape, the ability to get the FEMA funds in here quickly and to get the services that our citizens need to help them recover through this terrible disaster," she said. "The debris, as you can see behind me, is huge. It's not just a couple houses with roofs off.

"This is a massive debris field. It's not just a couple blocks. It's miles. It's 17 miles (27 kilometres) long, almost a mile-and-a-half (2.4 km) wide." The town of Moore suffered a similarly powerful tornado in 1999 that killed 41, and another in 2003. A public memorial was scheduled to take place later in the day.

Romania Unfurls Huge Flag In Guinness Record Bid

A Romanian village has unfurled what they say is the largest flag ever made in a Guinness World Records bid. It took about 200 people several hours to roll out the flag, which organisers say measured 330 meters by 220 meters, about three times the size of a football field.

The five-ton flag was displayed in Clinceni, 35 kilometers southeast of Bucharest. Workers struggled to keep it firmly planted on the ground because of windy conditions and had to use small sandbags. Prime Minister Victor Ponta and other ministers visited the flag later.

Lab Worker Jailed For Swapping Urine Samples

Fire Erupts On Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

A FIRE broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship early Monday, forcing the more than 2,000 guests aboard to gather at assembly areas while it was extinguished, the cruise line said. A former public servant has been sentenced to 12 months jail for falsifying urine samples for workers at mine sites in WA's North West. Michelle Leanne Marsden, 41, was working for Pathwest in Tom Price last year when she substituted the urine samples of three men to ensure they would get a job or maintain their employment. The original samples provided by two of the men tested positive to amphetamines. Marsden also provided a clean urine sample for a friend so he could comply with a Family Court order. She was charged after an investigation by the Corruption and Crime Commission which included an undercover officer offering her $500 cash to swap a contaminated sample. District Court Judge Andrew Stavrianou said the offences were serious because of the harm that could be caused by drug-affected people operating machinery in the mining industry. Marsden pleaded guilty in the District Court in Perth to five charges of corruption. She will have to serve six months before she can be released. The company said the fire broke out at 2:50am (1750 AEST Monday) in a mooring area on the third deck of the Grandeur of the Seas as it was enroute to Coco Bay, Bahamas. The blaze was put out two hours later. "All 2224 guests and 796 crew have been accounted for, and there have been no injuries of guests or crew reported," the cruise line said. "In an abundance of caution, the captain deemed it necessary to muster all guests at their assembly stations," it said. Two guests were treated for fainting, it said on its Twitter account. The ship has been diverted to Freeport, Bahamas, for further evaluation but the ship's power, propulsion and communications systems functioned without interruption, Royal Caribbean said. The Grandeur of the Seas departed from Baltimore on May 24 on a weeklong voyage to Coco Bay and Nassau, Bahamas. The fire was the latest in a series of mishaps to hit the cruise ship industry. In February, thousands were stranded for days on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship in the Gulf of Mexico without power or toilets after an engine room fire knocked out power.

Grandpa Skydives For Sick Great-Grandson

Man Bit Woman's Nipple

A 22-year-old Balclutha man bit a woman's nipple after she asked him to stop during consensual kissing and touching. Benjamin John Brown appeared in the Balclutha District Court before Judge Phil Gittos and admitted doing an indecent act with intent to offend on March 3. He was sentenced to 100 hours' community work and ordered to pay $500 emotional harm reparation. Police prosecutor Sergeant Marcus McMahon said Brown was at the woman's house when they lay down on a mattress together during the early hours of March 3. They began kissing, hugging and touching but a short time later the woman asked him to stop, McMahon said. Brown grabbed her breast, pulled it from her bra and bit hard on her nipple, McMahon said. She screamed in pain and told him to get out, which he did. She received a small cut at the base of her nipple and was upset by the incident. When spoken to by police Brown denied the facts but admitted biting her nipple and said he did it while they were engaged in consensual kissing and touching and thought she might like it, McMahon said. Brown's lawyer Carmen Jillett said he was co-operative with police and wanted the opportunity to apologise to the woman.

Baby Killer Chinese Man Sentenced To Death

An 87-year-old World War II veteran has parachuted from a plane in Ohio to support his ailing greatgrandson. Clarence Turner of Fairfield made the jump with an instructor. He says he wanted to generate attention for the plight of 10-month-old Julian Couch, who suffers from a lung disease that could require a transplant. WLWT of Cincinnati reports that Julian is hospitalized in Columbus. A fundraiser is planned for June 2. Turner also made a jump at age 85 to fulfill a goal to experience freefalling and landing as he did in the Army. He served from 1944-47, and his last jump was in Japan. Turner says he also hopes to someday make a parachute jump at an older age than former President George H.W. Bush, who's 88. A 48-year-old Chinese man has been sentenced to death for strangling a twomonth-old baby after stealing a SUV with the infant inside. Zhou Xijun was sentenced to death by the Changchun Intermediate People's Court which also deprived him of his political rights for life. Zhou was also sentenced to five years in jail and fined 50,000 yuan (USD 8,065) for stealing as reported. He was ordered to pay the family of the baby 17,098.50 yuan to compensate for economic losses. On March 4, Zhou stole an SUV parked by the side of a road in Changchun, capital of Jilin Province, and drove it onto a highway. He turned himself in a day after massive searches for the baby and the thief were launched by police and the public.

Changes Coming Soon To The Canadian Passport Program

New ePassport, 10-year validity for adult passports, a new fee structure
Here is some advice to help with your passport application Apply during quieter periods. Early in the morning on a Wednesday or Thursday tends to be less busy in the Passport Canada offices. Save time and avoid mistakes. Complete your application form on your computer and then print it out once completed. The fillable PDF application forms are interactive and can help you avoid errors. Doing this may also save you time in the passport office as the barcode can be quickly scanned with the information you have entered. Double check. Make sure your application form is complete and you have all of the required documentation including proof of parentage for child applications. No changes to application requirements Application requirements will not change with the new ePassport; however, the application forms will be modified to reflect the new fee structure and give adult applicants the choice between a 5-year or a 10-year passport. This year, changes are coming to the passport program that will benefit Canadians and help keep Canada at the forefront of international travel document security. As of July 1, 2013: Canadas new 36-page ePassport becomes available through all service channels. A new fee structure takes effect. Applicants age 16 and over can apply for a 10-year passport (a 5-year passport will also be offered, and all children's passports will be issued with a maximum of 5-year validity). These new forms will be posted online on July 1, 2013. Canadians have told us they are looking forward to the new 10-year passport, so we may encounter higher application volumes in July.

Man Sentenced To 17 Months In Jail For Animal Cruelty

B.C. Lotto Winner Collects $31.7M Prize - One Month Later

A lucky B.C. senior has finally stepped forward to claim $31.7 million in Lotto 6/49 winnings, more than a month after Aprils record jackpot. Harry Black was presented with not one, but two cheques at the BC Lottery Corporation's Vancouver office Tuesday after revealing he had purchased duplicate tickets. The 66-year-old Surrey resident told reporters hes been playing the same numbers for 35 years because the odds are better. And now that hes won, the film industry worker said he plans to do something hes never done before: go on vacation. Im just gonna go to an airport, grab a ticket to the nearest flight out and go, Black said Four winning tickets were sold in last months $63 million draw, and two were quickly claimed by players from Vancouver and Alberta. But few would have guessed the remaining two, which were both sold in Surrey, were purchased by the same man. While the other two winners took home a cool $15.8 million each, Blacks double-down strategy secured him twice as much. Black said he realized hed won while working on a film set in North Vancouver, but amazingly wasnt fazed by the life-changing discovery. Im pretty good at keeping my composure, he told CTV News minutes before accepting his two cheques. I dont have any feeling about it. About the same emotion as me having a cigarette. Black credits his even-keeled demeanour to his time working in high-pressure jobs in construction and in the film industry, and said he doesnt plan on quitting. Im a workaholic. I never stop working. Even when Im sitting watching TV my brain is working on something, he said. When Black broke the news to his accountant, he said he couldnt stop laughing. It took him a half an hour for him to regain his composure, he said adding, Hes a good guy. BC Lottery Corporation vice-president Kevin Gass said the chances of one person taking home such a large chunk of the winnings are slim. Scientifically speaking, the odds of him wining half of the biggest jackpot in Canada are about a gazillion to one, he said.

A Vancouver man has been sentenced to 17 months in prison for abusing several cats and a mouse that he filmed on video, in what the BC SPCA says is one of the worst animal cruelty cases theyve ever come across. Jordan Lucas, 29, was sentenced Wednesday in Vancouver after pleading guilty. He was also given a two-year ban on owning any animals. The animal abuse first came to light when Mr. Lucas sold a television to an individual over Craigslist, according to Crown spokesperson Samantha Hulme. Ms. Hulme said the television included an SD card, used to record video, which featured footage of a person abusing a cat and a mouse. The individual contacted the BC SPCA, which subsequently came into possession of more videos of Mr. Lucas abusing cats. Ms. Hulme said the cats were thrown against furniture, burned and sprayed in the face with a chemical. She could not confirm whether the animals were killed. The individual who bought the TV was able to identify Mr. Lucas to police as the person in the video, Ms. Hulme added. She said the videos were made from January to February, 2012. The Crown and the defence had made a joint submission for a 17-month sentence. Ms. Hulme said the Crown

A couple living near Onoway, Alta., received an awful surprise when they returned home to find their dog was missing and a chilling note left behind. The RCMP was advised that a huskycollie cross had been tied up on a leash in the yard of a rural property northwest of Edmonton. When the owners came home, the dog was missing and on the front door was a typed note: "Smile... you are being watched because you have to be careful. Big Brother is on you!!!" Cpl. Colette Zazulak of the RCMP said the owners have no idea who might have swiped their dog. Investigators spoke with some neighbours, but they didn't see anything suspicious. "When a dog gets tied up and goes missing with a note, of course we're really concerned," Zazulak said.

Dog Stolen, Creepy Note Left For Owners

was content that the judge issued the sentence it was seeking. Mr. Lucas was also sentenced to 17 months for an unrelated robbery charge, as well as receiving jail time for several lesser charges. The sentences will be served concurrently and, owing to time already served, will amount to seven months. Lorie Chortyk, the general manager of community relations with the BC SPCA, said her organization was pleased with the sentence but concerned that Mr. Lucas was only given a twoyear ban on owning animals. Its one of the highest jail sentences weve received in an animal cruelty case, but were disturbed with the twoyear ban on owning animals because we felt that, given the brutality of the actions, we would have liked to see a lifetime ban, she said, adding that the abuse was some of the worst SPCA constables had ever seen. In one case, the torture went on for hours and hours of a little kitten, she said. It was one of the most sickening cases. The BC SPCA said it carries out about 6,000 animal cruelty investigations every year. Ms. Chortyk said constables only investigate cases that are reported and that far more cases of animal abuse likely occur.

"There's a lot more to it than just my dog was running around the yard and when I came home it was gone."

The Canada Post Group of Companies reported a profit of $51 million before tax for the first quarter of the year, boosted by the sale of its mail sorting plant in downtown Vancouver in January. The sale of the property gave the federal Crown corporation a $109-million gain before taxes. A year earlier, the group had a pre-tax loss of $73 million in the first quarter. Without the property sale, company said it would have lost $58 million

for the three-month period this year including a $41-million loss at the core Canada Post segment. The company said Wednesday that it expects to report a full-year loss for 2013. Canada Post has been grappling with a persistent drop in many forms of mail as a result of newer technologies such as electronic mail and online banking. Besides Canada Post, the group includes the Purolator courier service and other subsidiaries.

A 24-Hour Queen: Judges Typo Forces Miss Universe Canada Winner To Give Back Her Crown
I tell Denise Garrido that it is OK to be bitter. In fact, I urge her to be just a little bit bitter, because I would be bitter, and because being bitter, because feeling angry, because getting fall down drunk and busting some furniture and shouting at the moon that life isnt fair would all fall within the realm of completely understandable reactions given her present situation. Given that, last Saturday night, at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts in Toronto, with scores of family and friends and complete strangers looking on, Ms. Garrido experienced something that she describes as perfect bliss. When they announced that I was the winner that I was actually going to be Miss Universe Canada it is something that I had always wanted ever since I was a little girl. It truly was a dream-come-true moment. I was so happy. Happy to don her glittering crown, happy to slip on the Miss Universe Canada sash, happy to receive a bouquet of flowers and accept congratulations from her fellow competitors before collapsing into her hotel room bed after a night of celebrating her win. The 26-year-old ballroom dancing aficionado, who has a second-degree Sunday. It started out on a positive note, Ms. Garrido says. Then they told me there had been a miscalculation, that the wrong winner had been found and that the runner-up was the actual winner. Then they asked the aspiring doctor from Bradford, Ont., to hand back her crown. And her Miss Universe Canada sash. And all because of a glitch, all because some Miss Universe Canada judge screwed up when inputting the handwritten scorecards for the gowns and bikinis and skill testing question components of the three day competition into a computer, a mistake that, upon remedy, knocked Ms. Garrido from top spot to 3rd runnerup ending her Ms. Universe Canada reign after 23 hours. It was shattering, she tells me, over her cars speakerphone, while driving from her parents home in Bradford to Toronto. I was sad. I was disappointed. And I was embarrassed, really embarrassed, because everyone back home had been celebrating. Getting over my own ego has been the hardest thing. But being angry would not have changed this situation. I guess not.

Denise Garrido, who was Miss Universe Canada for 24 hours before a miscalculation was spotted and a new winner crowned, poses for a portrait in Toronto, Ontario black belt in Taekwondo and is sequined-glow of her beauty queen a classically trained pianist to boot glory. was still happy the next morning I still couldnt believe it, she says. after waking up to spend the day And then the unbelievable happened: filming Miss Universe Canada 2013 event organizers called Ms. Garrido promotional spots and basking in the into an urgent meeting at 10 p.m.

Air Canada Ordered To Increase Payout To "Bumped" Passengers

Air Canada passengers who are bumped from overbooked domestic flights are entitled to higher compensation, a federal agency has ruled. The Canadian Transportation Agency has decided that the existing practice of paying $100 cash or $200 travel voucher is unreasonable. It has given the airline 30 days to submit new compensation guidelines. The agency sided with Gabor Lukacs, a former University of Manitoba math professor, who has challenged several airline industry practices. "I'm extremely pleased by this decision and it is a very important step forward for Canadian in terms of rights of passengers," he said from Halifax, where he lives. Lukacs suggested to the agency that passengers be compensated between $200 and $800 depending on the length of delay. Delays of less than two hours would prompt the minimum compensation. Bumped passengers who are delayed two to six hours would get $400 and the maximum would be given for longer delays. The agency said the airline must indicate why it shouldn't approve the model suggested by Lukacs or one used in the United States. In the United State, twice the airfare up to a maximum of US$650 is paid for delays of one to two hours and four times the fare to a maximum of US$1,300 is paid for delays exceeding two hours. The federal agency ruled that Air Canada's 12-year-old bumping payout rate is outdated and doesn't reflect the current price of airline tickets, accommodation and other incidental expenses. "Mr. Lukacs has presented a more compelling case that Air Canada's statutory, commercial and operational obligations fail to outweigh the rights of passengers to be subject to reasonable terms and conditions of carriage," it said in a 17-page ruling. The ruling doesn't affect WestJet Airlines (TSX:WJA) because it doesn't overbook flights. Air Canada (TSX:AC.B) could appeal the agency decision to the Federal Court of Appeal. "At this time it would be inappropriate to comment as we are currently in consultation with the Canadian Transportation Agency on this topic," said airline spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur. Air Canada successfully argued that it can overbook and deny compensation in limited cases when it has to switch to smaller aircraft for operational and security reasons that are beyond its control. Lukacs argued that this was a catch-all excuse the airline could use to deny compensation. However, the agency agreed Air Canada should have this flexibility as long as it is able to demonstrate that the events prompting the substitution were beyond its control and that it took every possible measure to avoid the situation. Otherwise, it must pay compensation. While the ruling applies only to domestic flights, the agency is considering a complaint filed by another person dealing with international flights. Lukacs, who has taken Canadian airlines to task over baggage and other fees, said Canadian passengers face what he says are among the worst conditions in the world. The advocate said he was prompted to file a complaint in December 2011 after he and some passengers were told by Air Canada that they were not entitled to compensation if they responded to a request for volunteers to be bumped. "As long as we put up with it they will do it and somebody has to stand up and say no, the buck stops here, this is unacceptable and unreasonable," he said.

Cougar Sightings Close Coquitlam Park

The City of Coquitlam is closing Coquitlam River Park after a series of cougar sightings in the area. Officials say the cougar has lost its fear of people and may exhibit aggressive behaviour. People are being asked to stay out of the park and to be extremely cautious in all areas adjacent to the Coquitlam River, which runs through the park. Conservation officers are attempting to track the animal so it can be captured and relocated.

'Honour Killing' Victim Sought RCMP Help

years of experience at that time. He consulted the senior officer in charge about how to proceed. We provided her with telephone contacts for people in the Indian consulate, he testified. There was not much we felt we could do in Canada at that time. Michael Klein, the lawyer for Mr. Badesha, asked Cpl. Cook if Ms. Sidhu was under oath or otherwise admonished to ensure she was telling the truth. She was not. He read out part of the statement handwritten by Ms. Sidhu that said her family had hit her and threatened her when they found out she was trying to sponsor her husband, Sukhwinder (Mithu) Sidhu, to come to Canada. That, on its face would suggest that this person had been threatened or assaulted? Mr. Klein asked. I would agree with you, yes, Cpl. Cook said. Nothing further came of those allegations, then? No, it did not, the officer testified. And, unlike the other things that were talked about, about the husband in India, these appear to have occurred in Canada, correct? In reviewing it now, I would agree with you. It does appear that that occurred in Canada. Earlier Wednesday, the court heard from the owner of a beauty school Ms. Sidhu attended in 1998, the year before she married in secret in India. Deborah Devos testified that Ms. Sidhu confided to her that she had a secret love in India, but her uncle had arranged a marriage for her already. At one point, she was upset because there was an arranged marriage to a person her uncle had chosen that was quite a lot older than her, and she said the only reason they want me to marry him is because he has lots of money. She did not want to marry him, she said. Ms. Devos said Ms. Sidhu described a family life controlled by her uncle in which girls were not allowed to date or go to dances or parties. She was not allowed to have the type of social life that the boys were allowed to have, said Devos, who recounted for the court two occasions when an uncle she identified as Mr. Badesha came into the school and angrily grabbed Sidhu by the arm to take her home. He grabbed her and at one point I offered to call the police and Jassi asked me not to, that it would make things worse. Malkit Sidhus lawyer, David Crossin, asked Ms. Devos what Ms. Sidhu said about her mother. Is it fair to say that Jassi indicated to you that her mother, because of her gender, was as much a victim in that family as Jassi? he asked. A mother without power. Correct? A woman without power, Ms. Devos said.

Surjit Badesha and Malkit Sidhu appear in B.C. Supreme Court in January 2012 for orchestrating the brutal killing of Ms. Sidhus daughter Jassi more than a decade ago after she married a man the family didnt approve of. Two months before she was abducted and murdered in a so-called honour killing in India, a young British Columbia woman walked into the suburban Vancouver RCMP detachment near her home with a plea for help. Jaswinder Jassi Sidhu walked out of the Ridge Meadows detachment about 45 minutes later with the telephone number for the Indian consulate, although police had received repeated calls in the past from her and others about her situation. She advised me that she had concerns for the safety of her husband, who was in India, and she also mentioned that she felt there was some harm that was going to come to him, Corporal Andy Cook testified on Wednesday at the extradition hearing of Ms. Sidhus mother and uncle. Cpl. Cook took a statement from the 25-year-old woman, who told him she had married against the wishes of her family. On June 8, 2000, Ms. Sidhus body was found in a canal near a village in Punjab, where she had gone to reunite with her husband after fleeing her family home. Her mother, Malkit Kaur Sidhu, and her uncle, Surjit Singh Badesha, face extradition to India to face charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Although others have testified of the increasing fear Ms. Sidhu felt for her own life after her family discovered her secret marriage, Cpl. Cook did not say she mentioned concerns for her own safety. Friends have testified that Ms. Sidhu had been in contact with police repeatedly, and ultimately had an officer escort her to the family home to pack her things and leave. Earlier this month, a woman who rented the basement suite from the family testified that she called police several times to report domestic disturbances upstairs at the home. But Cpl. Cook said Ms. Sidhu told him her uncle had gone to India. Based on our conversation, I was able to determine that the complaint she had was the alleged action taking place in India, Cpl. Cook said. I was unfamiliar with what to do. I had four

Nine Ways To Avoid Counterfeit Polymer Bills

Since Canada's new polymer bills were released last year, 59 counterfeit versions of various denominations have been caught across the country, according to the RCMP. Sgt. Duncan Pound says people have become so confident the new bills can't be counterfeited that they are failing to check the security features. Many of the fakes are also made from polymer, so police say it is important to check the security features to ensure the bills you receive are real. If after checking the other features, you're still unsure that a polymer note is genuine, try spotting the numbers hidden inside the translucent maple leaf. Several fakes of the $100 bill have already been spotted in B.C. In May, police in New Westminster said two counterfeit $100 bills were found at a local business and a major bank. Police said the real bills clearly show the flag and rooftop of Parliament Hill's East Block in the hologram window, along with the number 100, repeated several times. But on the counterfeit $100 bills, the 100, the rooftop, and the flag are not present, said New Westminster police Sgt. Diana McDaniel.

When Anna, a warden at a hostel in made a class five student drink urine as a cure for bedwetting 10 days ago, she invited national outrage. Her 'solution' was no different from a mother would put out her son's wet sheets on display at the window for all to see. Landon would run home every day in a frantic bid to remove the sheets before his classmates could spot them. Punishing a bed wetter is the most common mistake parents make, says pediatric nephrologist. It's not a lack of effort on part of the child that causes him to bed wet. There are a number of factors at work that are beyond his control. The bladder needs to learn to contain the urine while the child is asleep. Just as you cannot teach someone language in a day, you can't teach the child how to control his bladder in a night. While most children are believed to achieve bladder control by the age of five, 20 per cent kids continue to bed wet even until they are 10 years old. Less than 10 per cent carry the behaviour into their teens. It gets problematic not because it is a medical problem, but due to the embarrassment associated with it. Also known as primary nocturnal enuresis, bedwetting has been linked to a variety of factors, including: Genetics: Most children who wet their bed have at least one parent with a similar history. Miscommunication between bladder and brain: Most children learn to respond to that click in the brain even when asleep when their bladder is full. If your child has an 'accident', remember it's not his fault. If it becomes a regular occurrence, try figuring if there is any new stress that has entered his life. Bladder is functionally untrained: It is unable to recognise the amount of urine it could be holding. As a result, as soon as it receives intake from the kidneys, it feels full and loosens to eject urine. Anxiety at play: Often, kids who are stressed about their studies or are bullied at school tend to bed wet. Sometimes, the birth of a sibling is also a reason. When the older child senses being left out, he might withdraw into a shell, and end up seeking attention from his parents. Bedwetting could be a part of this process. Dealing with it Have you ever heard of a young, adult

Parents who scream at their kids for bedwetting end up prolonging the condition. Patience and love is all it takes to make it a 'dry night'

man or woman wetting the bed? "No, right? Parents need to understand that bedwetting does not last a lifetime. All you need to do is equip yourself so that you handle it correctly. Here's how: Don't scold, it will make things worse: Landon is said to have continued to wet his bed till he was 14. Clearly, his mother's public humiliation didn't work. Shouting at your child will not make it stop. It might cause him to slip into depression, and even lose his appetite. Six months ago, a psychologist Seema encountered an 11-year-old student of class five, whose mother would smack him each time he woke up on a soggy mattress. The boy was obese, and his mother thought he was being lazy, refusing to wake up to pee. When I analysed the case, I realised it was his social phobia, inferiority complex and a fear of facing his peers at school, that was leading to wet nights, said Seema. Teased with the moniker 'motu', he had grown into a recluse, and was seeking an outlet to express his anxiety. Seema started with play therapy, asking him to pick up toys and assign them varied roles. He connected with one of the heavy toys, and began narrating his own story and feelings through it. It took over four months for us to assure him that it was okay for him to express his inner self. Gradually, his bedwetting decreased. Use a reward programme or star chart: Prepare a chart for the week and stick it on your refrigerator. Ask your kid to mark each day with a star sticker if he's had a 'dry' night. Let him achieve a target of at least, one star per week. Continue it for two or three weeks and revise the target to more than one star. Reward your child with something he likes each time he meets the expectation. Own up to it: If you are travelling and staying at a hotel or vacationing with friends, don't be embarrassed to share the fact with them. It's not a medical problem. Carrying a waterproof overlay to throw over a mattress is a great idea. Strap on a funky watch: Several shopping portals retail vibrating watches that kids can wear to bed. It's a great way to remind your child to void at fixed intervals (for eg, every two hours). It features an auto restart countdown mode that vibrates for 20 seconds at the interval you choose.

What Causes Seizures?

Do you know what causes seizures? There are many facts about seizures -some you are probably aware of, and some may be new to you. Here, you'll learn the facts about seizures. In a normal brain, there are millions of specialized nerve cells, called neurons, that transmit electrical impulses. These impulses communicate with other areas of the brain and serve in the everyday functions of your life. When these impulses misfire, a seizure occurs. Whether you or a loved one has experienced a seizure, there are some basic facts you need to know about seizures: Seizures are not contagious. Seizures, whether you have watched one or experienced one yourself, are a very frightening experience. However, you cannot have a seizure by coming into contact with or assisting someone having a seizure. You can have a seizure at any age. Seizures can occur from infancy to your later years in life. There are many causes of seizures. For instance, young children and babies are more susceptible to seizures under certain conditions, such as having a fever or too much water. On the other hand, strokes and neurodegenrative disorders, like Alzheimers disease, may make an older person more susceptible to experiencing a seizure. Anyone can have a seizure. You dont have to have to be diagnosed with epilepsy to have a seizure. Epilepsy implies that you are having multiple seizures. However, a seizure can occur due to a variety of factors, such as a fever, high or low blood sugar, a tumor, injury, electrolyte imbalance, and drug withdrawal. Sometimes, you can correct the underlying factor and will not experience any more seizures. On the other hand, some of these factors, such as a brain injury, may be permanent. In this case, you will require lifelong therapy to manage your seizures. There are different types of seizures. Not all seizures look the same. For instance, generalized tonic clonic seizures are characterized by jerking and stiffening of the entire body, whereas in absence seizures, the individual might appear as if they are staring off into space. There are also other seizures that might involve the twitching of a finger or one area of the body. You can have more than one type of seizure. Some people think that you can have just one type of seizure when, in fact, you could have more than one. This depends on which areas of the brain are misfiring. For instance, one person can be diagnosed with simple partial seizures and generalized tonic clonic seizures. Additionally, you could be taking a medication to manage your absence seizures, but may then begin to have generalized tonic clonic seizures. In any case, it is always very important to talk to your healthcare provider when this happens, so that they can optimize your therapy to manage them. You might not need to take medication for your seizure. This statement does not fit all seizure types, but there are some instances where a seizure may not need to be treated. Febrile seizures in children, in most instances, happen one time and do not need further treatment - other than lowering the fever. Additionally, imbalances in electrolytes and blood sugar can usually be corrected in order to prevent another seizure from occurring. Your healthcare provider would need to monitor your blood levels - and your progress - to ensure that another seizure does not occur. Treatments are widely varied. Seizures, as well as other health conditions, vary widely from person to person. Because of this, one drug may not fit everyone. For example, if you and another person suffer from tonic clonic seizures, you might find that you are not taking the same medication to manage them. Your health care provider will find the right medication or other measures to help you manage your seizures effectively. One treatment is not for everyone. Treatment Of Epilepy And Seizures Do you know what is the correct treatment of epilepsy and seizures? There variety of treatment options available, and the use of a particular treatment depends on the type of seizures you are having and other co-existing conditions. To treat a seizure disorder, your healthcare provider will perform a battery of tests in order to discover what may be causing your seizures. These tests would include an EEG, or electroencephalogram, blood tests, lumbar puncture, brain imaging, and a detailed medical history. Depending on the results, your seizures may be treated with medication, with surgery, or by removing the cause of the seizure. There are many causes of seizures and epilepsy that can include: a stroke trauma to the head and brain certain medications fever alcohol withdrawal a tumor in the brain an infection certain metabolic conditions (like low blood sugar, low sodium, or low calcium levels) neurodegenerative diseases (like Alzheimers disease or Parkinsons disease) inherited condition Removing The Cause Some seizure disorders can be treated if the source of the seizures is removed. An example of this would be certain metabolic conditions, like low blood sugar, low sodium, or low calcium levels. In this case, correcting the metabolic imbalance can usually treat seizures. For instance, if an individual had low blood sugar, giving them sugar would usually stop the seizures from occurring. Additionally, high fevers may cause seizures. In most cases, reducing the temperature and breaking the fever usually prevents the seizures from recurring. Treating With Medications Many medications, also known as anticonvulsants, can be used to treat and prevent seizures. Some of these medications have been on the market for a while, whereas others are fairly new. In any case, your healthcare provider will select the medications used to treat your epilepsy and seizures based upon the type of seizures you are having, in addition to any other conditions you may have or your ability to tolerate the medication. The anticonvulsants include: Phenobarbital Dilantin (phenytoin) Depakote (valproic acid) Tegretol (carbamazepine) Gabitril (tiagabine) Neurontin (gabapentin) Topamax (topiramate) Keppra (levetiracetam) Lamictal (lamotrigine) Felbatol (felbamate) Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) Lyrica (pregabalin) Zonegran (zonisamide) Each drug is discussed in detail in a separately. Your healthcare provider will assess the effectiveness of the drug by checking the amount of the medication in your blood and the number and type of seizures you are having, if any. Surgical Treatment If the medications do not seem to control the seizures, surgical treatment may be warranted. Although this is rare, some surgical procedures can reduce, if not eliminate, the number of seizures experienced. Surgeries can include: removing the offending area of the brain removing a hemisphere, or one side of the brain cutting the nerves that connect the two hemispheres, or sides, of the brain. These surgical interventions involve removing the part of the brain identified as the source of the seizures or the fibers connecting the two hemispheres of the brain. Other Treatments While medications are the primary way that seizures are controlled, other treatments have shown favorable results when treating epilepsy. While no one really knows how they prevent seizures, they do work: The ketogenic diet is a special diet that consists of a high amount of fat and carefully controlled, but very limited, intake of sugar and protein. While this diet is very limited in what you can eat, it has been effective in controlling, if not curing, seizures. Vagal nerve stimulation involves the surgical placement of an electrode in the brain that fires periodically to prevent a seizure from occurring. Responding to a Seizure What to do when a fit occurs Dealing with someone that is having a seizure can be scary. When someone is having a 'fit' their muscles jerk, they can lose consciousness, they often fall to the ground and can make noises e.g. rasping and shouting out. On top of this the face grimaces, the body can become rigid. Perhaps the most difficult aspect to witness, I think, there are changes to breathing patterns. In some types of seizure the person may not take a breath for what appears to be quite a long time. In fact it is your anxiety that will make it seem longer. In more serious types of seizure the person may begin to turn a slightly bluish (cyanosed) color before they take a breath. Causes of Seizures One of the problems of a seizure is that you might not know the cause. In fact 60% of people that experience a seizure will not have a diagnosis and may never get a diagnosis. Seizures sometimes just happen for no apparent reason. Seizures in adults and seniors can also be caused things like a head injury, a brain tumor, or from cerebral irritability resulting from infectious diseases e.g. meningitis, a stroke, high fevers or from toxic substances. How to Respond to Seizures If you need to assist someone having a seizure here is what you need to do: Try to note time the fit began. Protect the person from injury or further injury. Move any sharp, hard or hot objects away from the area nearby. Loosen any tight clothing such as around the neck, chest or waist area. You need to help keep the airway clear. Rolling them onto their side will help drain any fluids out of the mouth. However, when someone is having a seizure you may have difficulty achieving this in the seizure's initial phase because of muscle rigidity and muscle jerks. Do not try and force open the mouth. Remember that although the persons' breathing changes and appears to stop it will just be for a 'short' time unless there is a major medical incident occurring ( something you cannot predict and something that is very rare). Monitor the person. When they begin to return to consciousness and the seizure ends, reassure them. Sometimes the person can be disorientated for a short period of time and can feel very sleepy and lethargic. Call emergency services if there is prolonged breathing secession, if the person is pregnant, diabetic or if the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes or if one seizure moves into another seizure. One problem that a colleague of mine who was epileptic always complained about was that she would find herself in an ambulance before she was given time to recover naturally! Sometimes though it is just safer to call 911.

Scientists have shown that a lifestyle that encourages a healthy heart could also shield patients with chronic kidney diseases from kidney failure and premature death, says a study. The findings suggest that patients with kidney diseases should be encouraged to improve their heart's health. Poor kidney health puts people at risk of developing heart problems. But it's unclear whether the opposite is true. Does heart health also affect kidney health? To investigate this, Paul Muntner, a researcher from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and

colleagues used the American Heart Association's recently published tool (Life's Simple 7) that helps individuals assess their heart health. Life's Simple 7 lists seven domains including not smoking, being physically active, following a heart healthy diet, having a normal weight, and maintaining low blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. "Scores on the Life's Simple 7 tool have been associated with risk for having a heart attack but it was unclear whether a worse profile would be associated with an increased risk for developing kidney failure," said Muntner.

Children who develop Type 2 diabetes are at high risk to develop heart, kidney and eye problems faster and at a higher rate than people who acquire Type 2 diabetes as adults, a new study has found. "Once these kids have Type 2 diabetes, they seem to be at very high risk for early complications when compared to adults," Jane Lynch, M.D., professor of pediatric endocrinology in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, said. The study, led in San Antonio by UT Medicine pediatricians, includes 699 children and young people, with 44 San Antonio participants. The rise in youth obesity rates has been accompanied by increasing Type 2 diabetes rates in young people. "It's really a public health issue," Dr. Lynch, who is principal investigator in the San Antonio arm of the study, said. There are many unanswered questions and few guidelines for treatment of youth with early onset Type 2 diabetes, she said. Type 2 diabetes should not be confused with Type 1 diabetes, formerly called

juvenile diabetes. Of the participants from the national TODAY diabetes study, more than a third required medication for hypertension or kidney disease 3.9 years after they had joined the study. In the study, 699 adolescents were randomized into three groups that received metformin, metformin plus rosiglitazone, or metformin plus intensive lifestyle intervention. While the children on the combined drugs did the best of the three groups, Dr. Lynch said, all did poorly. The researchers were particularly disappointed that the intensive lifestyle intervention group did not do better. The rate of deterioration of beta cell function in youth was almost four times higher than in adults, researchers found, noting a 20-35 percent decline in beta cell function per year on average, compared to 7-11 percent for adults. Beta cells store and release insulin. It does not make things easier that these adolescents with early onset T2 diabetes have a tough time managing complex health problems.

A new study shows that potatoes are one of the best nutritional values in the produce aisle, providing one of the better nutritional values per penny than most other raw vegetables and delivering one of the most affordable source of potassium of the more frequently consumed vegetables, second only to beans. Dr. Adam Drewnowski and colleagues from the University of Washington used a combination of nutrient profiling methods and national food prices data to create an "affordability index," which was then used to examine the nutrients per unit cost of 98 individual vegetables as well as five vegetable subgroups including dark green, orange/red, starchy, legumes (beans and peas) and "other" vegetables. The results indicated while dark green vegetables had the highest nutrient density scores, after accounting for cost, starchy vegetables (including potatoes) and beans provided better nutritional value for the money. Potatoes, in particular, provide one of the lowest cost options for four key nutrients including potassium, fiber,

vitamin C and magnesium. Among the most frequently consumed vegetables, potatoes and beans were the lowest-cost sources of potassium and fiber-nutrients of concern, as identified by the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines. "The ability to identify affordable, nutrient dense vegetables is important to families focused on stretching their food dollar as well as government policy makers looking to balance nutrition and economics for food programs such as the school lunch program and WIC," lead researcher Adam Drewnowski, PhD said. "And, when it comes to affordable nutrition, it's hard to beat potatoes," he said. The study was funded by the United States Potato Board and adds to the growing database of nutrition science that supports potatoes in a healthful diet. In addition, one medium-size (5.3 ounce) skin-on potato contains just 110 calories per serving, boasts more potassium (620g) than a banana (450g), provides almost half the daily value of vitamin C (45 percent), and contains no fat, sodium or cholesterol.

Tips To Protect Eyes From Heat

From viral conjunctivitis to corneal ulcer, the merciless summer can cause all sort of eye-related problems. Water, eye exercises and other remedies can help protect them. Below are some of the common eye problems during summer and tips on how to ward them off. Viral conjunctivitis: If your eyes turn red, get pricking sensation and if they start watering, you are suffering from viral conjunctivitis. Since it spreads fast, try not to contact people for a few days. You also need to maintain good hygiene by washing hands and the eye area with clean water. Keep handkerchiefs and towels to yourself and do not allow others to use them. Use antibiotic eye drops and eye ointments, but only after consulting experts. Stye: In this case, your eyes swell up. You will experience pain and redness will occur due to bacterial infection on the eyelids. Hygiene is important to get rid of stye. Maintain it with a hot compress. Analgesic tablets and antibiotics will also help to give some relief from pain. Dry eyes syndrome: The symptoms of this condition includes intense itching, fluid discharge from eyes, redness and soreness or dryness in the eyes. Eyes need to be washed thoroughly, lubricating eye drops will provide relief too. Wear good quality eye shades that will help to protect eyes from sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Corneal ulcer: The infection can be a result of complication of conjunctivitis or use of contaminated contact lenses. It can be bacterial, fungal or viral. It leads to severe pain, redness, watering, blurring of vision, photophobia and a yellowish white spot on the cornea. You must immediately visit a doctor if you are infected. Some dos and don'ts. Sunglasses: Opt for sunglasses that cover whole eyes. Shades block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation and screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light. Make sure your sunglass lenses are perfectly matched in colour and free of distortion and imperfection. Graycoloured lenses reduce light intensity without altering the colour of objects, providing the most natural colour vision. See a sunglass lens on how much UV radiation it absorbs. Contact lenses: Your contact lenses should also be protected from intense heat. If you wear UV protective contact lenses, you still need to wear a pair of sunglasses to protect the area of the eye that is not covered by the lens. No air-conditioning (AC): Use of AC should be avoided in case you are suffering from any kind of eye infection. Cold Water: Splash cold water on your eyes at regular intervals. This relaxes stressed eyes and keeps your eyes hydrated. Avoid rubbing eyes. Stay away from dusty areas. Eye exercise: Exercise is good for relieving the stresses off from eyes. The best eye care exercise that you can practice is to close your eyes and press them with your palms. You should do this eye care exercise daily for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Steps On How To Be More Successful In Your Life

Step #1 Take Full Responsibility For Your Life Do you believe that life happens on you because it is fate? Or do you believe that whatever happens to you because you choose to? The main difference between a successful person with an ordinary person who is struggling with life is that a successful person will never blame on what had happened to him. Successful people are strong believer in themselves. Successful people believe that everything happens on them because they choose to. It is because of their decision and action that lead them to the kind of lifestyle they are living today. On the other hand, if you are struggling through life today, it is because youre not in control of your life. Instead, you let all the circumstances around you take control of you. People will only struggle through life because they are not in control of what happens to them. Which means, if youre in control, youll feel happy, youll feel satisfy and as a result, youll be more successful. To sum it all, if you want to be successful in your life, you must first learn to be responsible. You have to take the responsibility that whatever happened to your life, happens for a reason. Step #2 Follow Your Instinct And Do What You Love Where do you think that successful people find their motivation to keep going on even if they failed 100 times? It is from doing what they love. When you do something that you love, youll automatically come up with the motivation to keep going on. And this is the number one motivational source of every successful person. If you think that successful people are all workaholic and they dont have the time to enjoy their life, then youre wrong. To them, theyre not working, theyre enjoying simply because theyre doing something that they love so much. Theyre willing to do it even if theyre not making any profit or getting any pay. If youre willing to do this, youre definitely doing something that you love to do. So focus in doing what you love, and then only try to make money from it. Most people thought that they should work hard and then make money from their hard work and so they can enjoy their life with the money they have. But this is not what a successful person would think. For a successful person, hell do something he loves, hes enjoying what he is doing while making money from the process and keep enjoying what he is doing. This is the real mindset of a successful person. Youre struggling in life because youre trying to profit from something that you hate to do. When you dislike to do something, youll never put in 100% commitment into doing it better. So find out what you love to do today and keep doing it. Step #3 Commit To Life-Long Learning Constant learning and never-ending improvement are vital in ensuring your success in your field. I know that if youre going to be a millionaire, you must be the top 5% in your field. When you become the top 5% in your field, youll definitely make more money than those who are in your field. And the only way you can become the top 5% in your field is through committing to life-long learning in your field and apply the knowledge into your life. Think about it, can you commit yourself and spend 30 to 60 minutes everyday to read a book? If you can, youll probably finish a book in a week. This means that youll finish 50 books in a year. Compare to others, how many books do you think most people will read? The answer is none. Most people are not going to read any books right after they leave their school. Therefore, if you can commit yourself to this self-improvement habit, youll definitely transform yourself into the top 5% in your field. Some people might say that it takes 1 year to finish 50 books, which is a long time. However, you must remember that no matter you spend the 60 minutes into reading or you spend it to watch television, youre going to lose that 60 minutes as well. You cannot stop time, you can only benefit from it by doing something constructive. And this is what youre going to do with it, use the time to learn and improve. Wake up 30 minutes early each day and use that time wisely to improve yourself. You can also attend seminars and workshop to improve your knowledge in your field. Dont wait for seminars to come to you, instead, go for those seminars. And listen to audio when youre travelling, this will leverage the most from your time. These are the 3 steps that youll need to be more successful in your life. To be successful is not an overnight process, you must go through all the process first before you can see the results. Success is a process, it is all about getting things done. So follow through these 3 steps today and start to transform yourself into a super achiever.

Former Child Actor From 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' Debuts In Cannes As Director!

You'll never guess who this young debut director at the French Riviera is... Remember that cute kid who played Preity Zinta's little brother in Kal Ho Naa Ho or the chubby kid who played younger Hrithik Roshan in Mujhse Dosti Karoge? He is no longer the affable boy but has transformed into a young filmmaker. Atith Naik is currently in Cannes to showcase his short film at the festival. Atith, who started his acting career at the age of six, appeared in seven feature films and more than 160 commercials. This time, there are a lot of Indian faces here for a change.` Atith is also making sure he has a sound training for his future projects. He is enrolled in Columbia College, Hollywood and is expected to graduate next year with a major in cinematography and another degree in Fine Arts. `I left India at the age of 18 to study film production in the Philippines. Whats Worse: Mallika Sherawats Lies Or Her Fake Accent?

No More Villain's Roles: Rishi Kapoor

In todays time, with the Internet cutting the distance between people, actors just cannot afford to tell stories. Especially not at the worlds most prestigious film festival, from where news is bound to travel far and wide! However, no one seems to have explained this logic to the Murder actor Mallika Sherawat. Or maybe she hasnt gotten her head around the intricacies of using the net.were not sure what the truth is. Much to the annoyance of millions of desi viewers, Mallika was seen and heard boasting about her cinematic accomplishments in an interview she gave at a media booth at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival. The Hisss actor was seen telling the interviewer in an accent that was neither Indian nor American but definitely exotic, that she was the first person to kiss onscreen. The lady spoke with all her heart, obviously believing deeply in herself, saying that the 17 kisses that she shared with her costar (Himanshu Malik in Khwahish, 2003) onscreen helped champion womens causes in India. She even insisted that she was the first one wear a bikini in an Indian film! Of course, she seems to have forgotten that a far more talented actor called Devika Rani kissed her co-star and later husband Himanshu Rai several decades earlier, in a 1933 film called

Karma, the liplock lasting four minutes! And there are more than a dozen heroines who wore bikinis long before Mallika did, starting with Sharmila Tagore in 1967 (Evening in Paris), Dimple Kapadia (Bobby, 1973), Zeenat Aman (Qurbani, 1980), Aruna Irani (Bombay to Goa, 1972), Rakhee (Sharmilee, 1971), Mumtaz (Apradh, 1972), Madhrui Dixit (Mujrim, 1989) we could go on and on! This only goes to show what a regressive mindset Mallika herself has, to subvert a whole chapter in the history of Indian cinema just to appear cool and with the times, no? Ms Sherawat also went on to say that after the many kisses she did, she became a fallen woman even as she attained superstar status in India. Not entirely true, wethinks. Her choice of movies like The Myth (with Jackie Chan, 2005) and the debacle of epic proportions that was Hisss (2010) were more responsible for boring holes in her career, rather than the temporary fame her kissing scenes got her. Sure, we admit that Bollywood is not as progressive as it should be when it comes to giving leading ladies their due, but it isnt as bad as Mallika makes it out to be either. But we know that in any womens empowerment that will take place in the future, Mallikas shapely self will not aid the cause!

Nikhil Advani's D Day and Subhash Ghai's Kanchi would be the last of Rishi Kapoor's current crop of greyblack roles. Thereafter the chameleon actor says he would be taking a break from being bad. Rishi Kapoor is currently going through the most fruitful phase of his entire 44-year career as an actor. Quips Rishi, `It's intentional. I wanted to prove myself as an actor. Log bol rahen hain ke Ranbir Kapoor achcha actor hai. Yeh bhool gaye ki Rishi Kapoor bhi actor hai. They say Ranbir is Raj Kapoor's grandson. They've forgotten the one generation that came in-between. Hello, knock knock.... I am not going away anywhere yet. I didn't want Ranbir to be called a chip off the old block. I wanted that I should I be known as a chip off the new block. Today loads of work is coming my way. I'm at liberty to pick and choose. ` Suddenly after Agneepath there is a spate of interesting negative roles for Rishi Kapoor to play. The excited actor reveals, `I'm not interested in playing the villain as a loud caricatural uni-dimensional creature. I

can't do that. I am trying to humanize evil. If you see my character in Aurangzeb I am not trying to ACT evil. My character's thinking is evil. He is willing to go to any lengths to achieve his ambitions and greed for wealth. I try to enter the thought-processes of my grey characters. Now in Nikhil Advani's D Day I again play the bad guy. I've again humanized the character. People around my character think him evil. But he's just doing his job. ` The maverick performer had had his fill of villainous roles for now. `I'll be seen in grey roles in two more films Nikhil Advani's D day and Subhash Ghai's Kanchi. Now enough for now. I don't want my grand- daughter to grow up and see me playing too many despicable characters. Whatever I am shooting for are light but not conventional roles. In fact the only father's role I'm shooting for is in Nupur Asthana's film where I get to work with another wonderful young actor Ayushmann Khurrana. But I am not shying away from any kind of roles, negative conventional or anything else.

Salman Khan Back As Prem With Sooraj Barjatyas Next

Back in March, we had reported that John Abraham had replaced Akshay Kumar in the sequel to Anees Bazmee's film Welcome. Now we hear that Sonakshi Sinha has been roped in for the film. If what we hear is true, Sonakshi has been paired opposite John in the film. Interestingly sometime back, John had expressed his desire to work alongside

Sonakshi Cast Opposite John In Welcome 2

Sonakshi. Sources close to the film, state that Sonakshi had been roped in for the role three days ago, while Kainaat Arora is expected to replace Mallika Sherawat in the film. Welcome 2 which will be helmed once again by Anees Bazmee who had directed the first part in 2007, is expected to start shooting in Dubai from June.

Who can forget Salman Khan as the most adorable Prem. If you are waiting to see the Dabangg star again as Prem then the days are not very far. Report say Salman Khan has teamed up with Sooraj Barjatya for the next. Salman has pushed back the shooting of No Entry sequel to accommodate dates for Barjatyas film. The filmmaker is keen to begin shooting by the end of the year or early next year and report is doing the round that Sallu has given them dates before he kick starts the shooting of Sajid Nadiadwalas 'Kick. Sooraj has not yet planned the script but when he approached the actor, he readily agreed. Salman even called up Boney Kapoor Boney Kapoor confirmed that he is not starting the film shooting anytime soon without citing the main reason.

Breathe Easy SRK, Akki: It's Sunny Deol Vs Sunny Leone Now

He adds, Talks are on with Salman as far as dates are concerned but I cant reveal the details. Salman shares a strong bond with Sooraj Barjatya. Sooraj ventured into direction with blockbuster, Maine Pyar Kya in 1989 with Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. The film was a box-office hit and people started to like Salman as Prem. He then stared in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) which became one of the highest grosser. The last time Salman and Sooraj worked together was Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999). Sooraj Barjatya makes family oriented film and Salman favors his choice as he too hails from a large family and believes in such themes. It would be really interesting to see Salman and Sooraj teaming up after 14 years.

While the industry is looking forward to the clash of titans at the box office this Eid - with SRK's Chennai Express and Ekta Kapoor's sequel of Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai - another film slotted for a release on the same day has quietly been shifted to a later date. Sources say that Sunny Deol's film Singh Saheb The Great was also scheduled for an early August release. However, the actor in a move that clearly shows he doesn't want to indulge in ego clashes, decided to postpone the release to October 11. It made no sense for director Anil Sharma and Sunny to hit the theatres on Eid when already two big films are fighting for theatres. While Ronnie Screwvala has already booked many screens, Ekta is also hell bent on getting her film a fair share at the box office.

Insiders say that the muscle power of an impressive cast of Shah Rukh KhanDeepika Padukone along with director Rohit Shetty and Milan Luthria directing Akshay Kumar-Imran Khan-Sonakshi Sinha could have been another reason why Anil and Sunny altered their initial plans. The source adds, `It was getting difficult for Singh Saheb to get any theatres and it was a sensible decision by Sunny to not let ego hamper the film.` `We do not wish to be involved when two films are already fighting at the box office. Our sole aim is to have the best possible release for our own project, on October 11.` It's Sunny vs Sunny! With the re-scheduling of dates, Sunny will now clash with another Sunny at the marquee. Deol's film will release alongside Sunny Leone's Ragini MMS 2 on October 11.

Bollywood Song List Revealed On BBC Asian Network

A song from 1966 Bollywood blockbuster movie Suraj (Sun) has been voted the best-loved track by BBC Asian Network listeners. Baharon Phool Barsao (Sprinkle the Flowers) was chosen from a list of 100 Hindi movie songs released between 1940 and 2010. The 100 tracks were shortlisted by a panel of experts including British Indian hip hop artist Hard Kaur. The countdown was part of the station's celebrations of 100 years of Bollywood. It was revealed in a special programme presented by Tommy Sandhu, following a whole day dedicated to counting down the best songs. Other panel members included Asian Network presenters and Indian film critic and entertainment reporter Rajeev Masand. "Bollywood is huge and massively popular for our listeners. Counting down the Top 100 Bollywood songs is a great way to celebrate all things Bollywood," said Neila Butt, Asian Network's editor of music and live events. Music is an integral part of any Indian movie and gives it extra appeal. The songs in Bollywood movies are normally pre-recorded and then lipsynched by the actresses and actors. The voice heard by the audience is usually the voice of a proficient playback singer. For many cinemagoers in India, it is a double pleasure watching a favourite actress and hearing a favourite singer simultaneously. "Audiences flock to the cinema to watch a movie at times just because of one song they've heard. A big part of its success and appeal is the music the songs and music are the soul of the movie." said Asian Network presenter Noreen Khan, who was also on the shortlisting panel. Bollywood churns out hundreds of films every year and has a global reach. Popular Hindi film songs have been played repeatedly in clubs, parties and Indian weddings around the world. Deepti Naval Documentary On Balraj Sahni Hits Roadblock

Films about Indian cinema's legendary personalities are still a rarity. And one of those rare attempts is being made by Deepti Naval - she is keenly interested in making a non-fictional film on the life and times of that amazingly naturalistic actor Balraj Sahni, but facing certain problems. Deepti, who is aesthetically motivated by Balraj Sahni's effortless performances, has been researching his life for years. Just when she was ready to put all her research material on screen for the immortal actor's birth centenary this month, a hurdle has placed in Deepti's plans by Balraj Sahni's son Parikshat Sahni. Explains Deepti, "I was really keen on making a film on Balraj Sahni. But when I approached his son Parikshat for his consent, he told me he had already given the filming rights on his father's life to another producer. He didn't think it was right for me to do a film when someone else is committed to do the same. I agree. But we're trying to find a solution to the deadlock, because I'm really keen to do this." Years ago, Simi Garewal made a documentarly called "Living Legend Raj Kapoor" and Sandip Ray did one on Kishore Kumar. Deepti, who was recently seen in a minuscule role in Yash Raj Films' "Aurangzeb", says some of her important scenes have been cut from the film.

"But I've no regrets. I did it because of my regards for Mr. Yash Chopra. He was always very sweet and kind to me," said the actress of films like "Saath Saath" and "Chashme Buddoor". The actress says mainstream cinema has always had a problem positioning her. "That's why I keep running back to the more realistic cinema. It's okay to do a small role in mainstream cinema like 'Aurangzeb' or 'Yaariyan'. But it's films like Rituparno Ghosh's 'Memories Of March' and Avinash Kumar Singh's 'Listen, Amaya' that sustain me as an actress," said Deepti. She is now looking forward to the release of Shekhar Suman's "Heartless". " 'Heartless' is a rare commercial film where I have a substantial role," she added.

The JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, which opened this week, may hold the new record for the world's tallest hotel building, but there are several other hotels that have breached the 400 metre mark. All the rooms in the Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong are to be found on floors with three-digit numbers, and offer a magnificent view of Victoria Harbour and the city's skyline from well over 400 meters up. The very highest luxury, in a twofold sense, is enjoyed by guests staying in the 415 sq. m Ritz-Carlton Suite on the 117th floor. A research by Emporis (www.emporis. com), the international provider of building data, shows that the Park Hyatt Shanghai is located on floors 79 to 93 of the Shanghai World Financial Center, the city''s tallest building at a height of 492 meters and a total 101 stories; in Shenzhen, the top 26 floors of the 442 meter tall KK100 are home to a St. Regis-Hotel. At 355 meters in height, the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, supersedes the 22 meters shorter Rose Tower, home to the luxurious Rose Rayhaan by Rotana, as the tallest building solely used as a hotel. Both skyscrapers are located in Dubai and provide their guests with an impressive view of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa. The Makkah Clock Royal Tower might be the world's second-tallest building, but its Fairmont Hotel only occupies the lower two-thirds of the tower. The top third consists of an enormous clock tower whose face can be seen from as far as 17 km away. A boom in skyscraper hotel construction is particularly evident in Asian cities and the future will not see a reduction in the number of sky-high hotels opening there: three of the buildings in the list were only completed in 2012, and further hotels of superlative dimension are already in the starting blocks, among them the controversial Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang. The 330 meter tall building, which has been under construction since 1986, will not now have the 3,000 rooms originally planned, but, in housing a Kempinski Hotel, will introduce the first western hotel chain to North Korea. The World's 10 highest hotels are: 1. The Ritz Carlton housed in International Commerce Centre, Hong Kong - 484m - 118 floors - 102-118 hotel floors 5. Grand Hyatt housed in Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai - 421m - 88 floors 51-87 hotel floors 2. Park Hyatt housed in Shanghai World Financial Center, Shanghai 492m - 101 floors - 79-93 hotel floors

With the RX, Lexus found an upper hand against the German luxury car brands. Its sedans and coupes lagged those from Mercedes, BMW, and Audi--but the Lexus RX beat all those brands to market with a richly fitted tall wagon with all-weather, all-purpose appeal. To this day, the Lexus RX--in RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid editions-remains a comfortable, understated piece, with a loyal following of repeat owners and buyers not swayed by the recently arrived Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes M-Class. The RX is more practical, often less expensive, and has standout tech and entertainment features in a package that won't be seen as fiscally or environmentally irresponsible. It also has a long-established reputation for reliability and dealer service that can't be erased. They're upscale, but not ostentatious. For the first time since the current thirdgeneration RX models bowed, for 2010, they've received a light refresh. The 2013 Lexus RX models get a version of the new 'spindle grille' that's already made its debut in the GS sport sedans, which makes it just a little menacing in our opinion, while all the snub-nosed, blunt-shouldered purposefulness-crossed with soft elegance--of the current generation's design remains. LED running lamps, new rear taillights, and a few new colors are the extent of the exterior changes, while inside there's a new steering wheel, contrast stitching for the leather, and a redesigned center console. New for 2013 on front-wheel-drive models is a Sport Appearance Package that includes a unique front bumper, halogen headlamps and superchromefinished 19-inch wheels. If there's a clear pronouncement to make about the RX 350 and 450h, it's that performance takes second stage

Hybrid models perform nearly as well--in an absolute sense, though they manage to mute out even more of the outside world through the steering and brakes. The 2013 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h are plush, yet not over-the-top lavish, and just a short ride in one is enough to see why it's such a popular choice for upscale realtors who don't want to look to filthy rich. There's a certain wholesomeness about the practical design, and its versatile seating is roomy and accommodating for four adults; at the same time, it's supremely smooth and quiet, with the passenger experience about as refined as you'll find in flagship luxury sedans like Lexus' own LS. Our only gripe remains that the standard front seats are a little flat and have odd back contouring, while the ride can be sharper (though still not rough) with the 19-inch wheel options. Lexus vehicles have a reputation for being not just refined and comfortable, but also for being exceptionally wellequipped. That's definitely the case here in the 2013 RX 350 and RX 450h; you'll find a comprehensive list of comfort and convenience features, while options are pretty much limited to interior upgrades and top-notch infotainment systems. Major options include leather; a USB port; navigation with real-time traffic; a rear-seat DVD entertainment system; and a superb Mark Levinson sound system. who will ask those inappropriately dressed to drape shawls, which we will provide," Barretto said. The shawls and stoles will have to be returned to the volunteers after the tour to the Church is over, he added. Barretto said the grouse over "inappropriate" clothing was common both with women and men. "Even men come here wearing beachwear. They would have to wear the shawl too," he said. The church, some 15 km from here, holds the mortal remains of Spanish Saint St. Francis Xavier, who evangalised large parts of Portugueseheld Goa and is known as the region's patron saint. Hindu temples in Goa, especially those in the temple town of Ponda, 30 km from here, too have put up signboards asking visitors to come wearing "decent clothing", failing which they would not be allowed into the temple.

The "indecently" dressed visitors to the 16th century Basilica of Bom Jesus in Goa, a must-do on most tourists' itineraries, will now be offered shawls to cover themselves up before they enter the shrine, a priest said on Wednesday. "We had been receiving complaints that tourists were not dressing properly for the church. Many people felt offended by it. We were forced to take this step," Fr. Savio Barretto, rector of the church, said. Last year, the church authorities had put up signboards and sought help from guides to ensure that tourists were appropriately dressed when they visited the baroque-style church, endorsed by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation ( Unesco) as a world heritage site. However, the efforts did not make much difference. "Now we have volunteers

Labasa lacked in defence: Gurjit Singh

TIMES SPORTS

Vancouver Canucks Re-Sign Tom Sestito To Two-Year Contract

Suva coach Gurjit Singh says the weakness in the Kalayanji Pala Labasa side defence was the key for their 5-2 victory last Sunday at ANZ Stadium during the Fiji Sun GP Batteries National Football League. Labasa scored early in the first half but at half time found themselves 3-1 down. Singh was satisfied with the performance of his side. Labasa was a good side but they were not organsied I saw their weakness in their defense and I told by boys to go through their defense and that is what they did and we scored. We could have

been up early in the match but we missed a lot of opportunities, Singh said. Labasa coach Arthur Simmons said lapse of concentration allowed Suva to score against his side. We started well but after we scored but they tend out to sleep after that one goal and by the time they woke up the three goals were already in the net but we will come prepared for them in Fiji FACT. Simmons added. Labasa will face the struggling Rewa side in this weekends clash in Suva on Sunday while Suva takes on Savusavu prior to Rewa and Labasa match at 1pm.

Northern Playoff Takes A Break

The Fiji Sun GP Batteries Northern premier division playoffs will continue next weekend. This was confirmed by the National League board chairman Shiek Ibrahim. The teams have asked for a week of break so that they can recover from playing 90 minutes of matches for three days and then prepare well for next round of matches. They deserve a break after performing so well in the first round of matches, Ibrahim said. The performance from defending champion Taveuni and Dreketi have impressed the senior vice president of Fiji Football Association. I am quite satisfied with the performance of Taveuni and Dreketi over the three day of competition and I believe they have really done well and they will be the teams to watch in the next round but at the same time I can see the hunger for other teams to do well. Ibrahim said. The next round of matches will resume next weekend as currently Taveuni leads the points table with the three followed closely by Dreketi with six points.

The Vancouver Canucks have locked up heavyweight fourth-liner Tom Sestito for the next two seasons as they continue to reset their team for the 2013-14 NHL season. Sestito. 25, received a two-year, one-way deal worth $1.5 million. His cap charge is $750,000. He made $605,000 in 201213 and stood to become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent on July 5. Sestito announced the signing himself on his twitter account. Once I got my end signed and they got their end signed and it was official, I just went out and did it, Sestito chuckled over the phone from his home in Rome, N.Y. Listed at 6-5 and 228 pounds, Sestito arrived in Vancouver mid-season on waivers from Philadelphia and played his first game March 2 against the L.A. Kings. He appeared in 23 regularseason outings for the Canucks, scored once, had 11 shots on goal and collected 53 penalty minutes while averaging just 6:37 time on ice. His fight card included the Kings Jordan Nolan, the Flames Brian McGrattan (twice), the Wilds Mike Rupp and the Blues Ryan Reaves. Players like Tom Sestito are a commodity, they really are, said Canuck assistant GM Laurence Gilman, who negotiates the teams contracts. He has size, hes prepared to play a physical games and has some aptitude with the puck. We were pleasantly surprised with him. Because he is limited in his skating ability, Sestito has never had a fulltime gig in the NHL. He once scored 42 goals in junior with the OHLs Plymouth Whalers but hasnt been able to achieve anything close to that in the professional ranks. In six seasons since leaving junior, hes played in just 57 NHL games, 13 with Columbus and 21 with the Flyers. He has five career goals. Security was an issue with Sestito in his contract talks with the Canucks. I wanted to have a two-year deal and I definitely wanted the one-way, he said. Being a UFA, I imagine I would been

able to get a one-way somewhere but I definitely wanted to be in Vancouver again. I expressed that in my exit meeting and they said they wanted me back, too, so I thought it was going to get done pretty quickly. Vancouver is a great organization with great fans and they treat you well. The leadership group in that locker room is second to none. So I didnt want to go anywhere else. I honestly dont think I could have matched that up in another place. Sestito did admit he was a little apprehensive that the Canucks are without a head coach after the firing of Alain Vigneault last week. Like every other player, hell now have to gain the trust of the new man. The coaching situation is always a concern but the organization is pretty sure what Im going to bring and I think the coach, whoever it is, will appreciate what I bring, he said. Sestitos agent, Scott Norton, agreed that not knowing who will coach the Canucks could be a bit risky for his client but noted that managements desire to have him back was paramount. There is always a gamble in not knowing who the coach is and there are certain coaches, I guess, who appreciate Toms style of play more than others, Norton said. Tom was faced with the option of going to UFA this summer but he loved his time with Vancouver. The talks went pretty smoothly, They seemed happy with what he brought to the table and I think theyve publicly said they probably need a little bit more size and grit in their lineup. With the Sestito signing, the Canucks still have 11 players from the seasonending roster who stand to become free agents on July 5. The UFAs are Mason Raymond, Andrew Alberts, Max Lapierre, Derek Roy, Manny Malhotra, Andrew Ebbett, Cam Barker and Steve Pinizzotto while those in the restricted category are Chris Tanev, Dale Weise and Jordan Schroeder.

TIMES SPORTS Ba Plans Ahead Blues Target Fact

Design Engineering Lautoka has taken a serious approach towards the Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament which starts next month. Their hard work was rewarded with a 4-1 victory over Rewa in the Fiji Sun GP Batteries National Football League last Sunday at ANZ Stadium in Suva. Blues coach Ravinesh Kumar was pleased with the performance of his team and has indicated that more needed to be done if they are to claim glory next month. The match against Rewa was the bench mark for the Fiji FACT and we have more things to work on to and we will do much better than the match against Rewa in the Fiji FACT, School teacher Kumar said. Lautoka last won the Fiji Football Association Cup Tournament (Fiji FACT) in 2002. Shalendra Prasad, the association president has been there administrating the blues for some years and believes that this is the year that his side will bring back the glory to the Sugar City. We are very desperate to win the Vodafone Fiji FACT and the road to the final would be very hard as we will be playing 90 minutes matches day in and day out which can be a huge factor for any team. All the teams are preparing to win and so is Lautoka, he said. We are also going for the win and the preparation needs to be well. The participating teams have ample time to prepare and there shouldnt be any excuse for not preparing well, he added. Lautoka defeated Nasinu in the 2002 Fiji FACT which was staged in Rewa and later had to be moved to Lautoka due to adverse weather condition We have last won in 2002 and since then we have been qualifying for the semifinals but we could not go one step closer of winning the title as there might have been some up and down in the team which has prevented us from winning the title.

Friday May 31, 2013

The Ba football side aims to retain the Fiji Sun GP Batteries National Football League in a bid to qualify for the 2014 Oceania Champions League. We could not achieve our dream this year as we were out of the competition at the semifinal stage but we have not lost hope and we will work hard this season in the National Football League so that we can win and be a representative of Fiji in the Champions League again, Ba manager Iliyaz

Khan said. Ba gained maximum points in the National Football League last weekend at home as they beat Coastal Rental Nadroga 2-0 and Tavua 13-2. We have a young team with the guidance of the senior players and they have done well. We have set our focus on winning the league title and the officials have full confidence in the side, he said.

Jack Reddy.

"Every team is a winner in the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s-The Road To Moscow". That's the statement from the President of the Marist Rugby Club, Lawrence Tikaram. Tikaram said the tournament has grown over the years because all the participating teams will walk away with something. Meanwhile the games will finish at around 9:30pm Friday after the first round of elimination where the top 32 teams progress to the next elimination
BC Reg. # 58791

round on Saturday. Organisers are confident with the new lighting at the ANZ Stadium, the teams will enjoy the night games. Tickets for the Marist 7s are on sale at the Fiji Sports Council office in Suva and it is $7 flat for Friday. On Saturday the ticket price will be $12 for the grandstand and $7 for the embankment. Games will kick off 8am at the ANZ Stadium, Bidesi Park and Buckhurst Park.

But this year we have a good coach guiding us and definitely he is planning well to end the winless streak this year, the Lautoka businessman said. The current Lautoka players look promising as they walloped Rewa last weekend. The players and the coach had worked hard for the match against Rewa and they came out victors and the communication amongst the players has been a game plan by the coach Ravinesh (Kumar), Prasad said. The side has been boosted with the return of the former Ba and Suva midfielder Shameel Rao who strongly featured for the side against Rewa. Shameel Rao has reunited with the Blues after sometime and we are very fortunate to have him in our squad and his inclusion will have a big impact with Alvin Avinesh in the midfield. So we are looking forward for his services to the team, he said. On the other hand latest inclusion and Fiji under 20 left back Pranil Naidu has been ruled out of the Fiji FACT after sustaining an injury. Doctors have ruled Naidu out of football action for the six weeks which means he would not be able to take part in the Fiji FACT which is the major blow for us but we have other players who would be playing for us, he said. Prasad has assured the Blues faithful that the day of celebration is not very far away. I urge the fans to keep supporting the team and the wait has been a long for the loyal fans and this year the side is on the right track and the best players have been assembled by the association to end the wait. Prasad said. Lautoka will have a stiff mountain to climb when the tournament starts next month at ANZ Stadium in Suva when the side faces Navua in the tournament opener then plays Rewa on the second day followed by Nadi at the Prince Charles Park in Nadi.
