1.

INTRODUCTION

The software in a P540 relay is stored internally in non-volatile memory. The relay can be programmed with new software via the 25-way socket on the front of the relay. This report explains the steps required to do this. To perform the download three things are required. A suitable computer running an AREVA programme called Px40 Download and Calibration A standard 25 way lead with male connections on both ends The appropriate files to download, supplied by AREVA as a self extracting ZIP file Also required are the MiCOM S1 software and a 9-way cable with male connections on one end and female on the other. When new P540 software is installed, it causes the relay to revert to the factory defaults for the protection settings, PSL, dnp3 configuration (if appropriate), Goose configuration (if appropriate) & language. So, it is important to ensure that these files are available prior to the software download either from master copies or extracted from the relay using MiCOM S1. Note the language files cannot be extracted. The Px40 Download and Calibration programme can also be used to change the model and or serial numbers. Again, this action will restore the default settings.

2.

PX40 DOWNLOAD AND CALIBRATION PROGRAM

The Px40 download and calibration programme must be installed on the PC. This program available from AREVA comes with its own install program and is installed in the same way as any other windows program.

3.

P540 SOFTWARE

The P540 relay software is supplied as a self-extracting ZIP file. An example of such a file is P545_12G.exe where P545 indicates the basic model, 12 indicates the software version number and G is the letter of issue of that software. Separate files exist for P541, P542, P543, P544, P545 and P546 and for each version of software. All files are uniquely named. To install the files on your computer copy the appropriate zip file to a suitable temporary location on your computer i.e. C:\temp. Select (highlight) the .exe file that corresponds to the required model e.g. if the model is a P545 then P545_12G.exe should be used. Using Windows explorer double-click on the selected file; the following screen is displayed.

A (default) directory location for the (download) files is displayed. This must be selected for the download to work. Click on the Unzip button, the files will be decompressed and stored in the previously specified directory (c:\P545 in the above example). The following screen will be displayed when the process is complete:

The files are now stored in the specified directory as shown below:

SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD

Power up the relay and connect a 25-way lead between the parallel port on the PC and the relay front 25-way port. The lead must be point to point i.e. pin 1 - pin 1, etc. Start the Px40 Download and Calibration application program, the following (default) screen should be displayed:

Ensure the same port as the hardware interface (usually LPT1) is selected in the Relay for Calibration and Serial Nosand Relays for Software Downloadboxes. Click on the Softwarebutton. The following will be displayed:

If the software is being upgraded to a different version of the same basic version i.e. 12F 12G with no change in protocol, the model and serial numbers do not change and the Skip button should be pressed. This will advance to the software down load dialog box. If the Model number and/or serial numbers in the relay are incorrect, a model and serial number must be entered in the appropriate fields. Note that the Model Number includes the communications option and the software version information.

and w = 1 for courier, 2 for modbus, 3 for CS103, 4 for DNP3.0, and 5 for UCA2 and ss is the software version (i.e. 12 for 12G software) A breakdown of the rest of the model number can be found in the Hardware / Software version historysection of the service manual.

Press the Downloadbutton. The following screen is displayed if the download is successful.

If an error is produced, then check the parallel port connection between the PC and Relay and the port selection in the selection Px40 Download and Calibration default screen. Select OK, the following is displayed:

Change the directory to the location where the download files are stored (C:\P545 in the example).

All of the available communication variants (download configuration files) are displayed. Either double click on the required communication protocol version or select (highlight) the version and click on the Openbutton. The download process may take a couple of minutes, after which, the following will be displayed if the download was successful:

If an error is produced during the download, then check the parallel port connection between the PC and Relay and the port selection in the selection Px40 Download and Calibration default screen. After a successful download and the relay will reboot. Check there are no unexpected alarms and check the following items in the SYSTEM DATA Column of the menu: + Model Number (e.g. P545118A1A0120B) + Serial Number (e.g. 123456N) + Software Reference (e.g. P545____1_0120_G) Update ratings label information accordingly and inform the After Sales department of the upgrade. Finally download the applications setting etc via MiCOM S1.
