Learning Progression in My Topic Area is about..

Developing Basic Understanding of Concepts About Print

Novice: Defining CONCEPT(S) Understands key terms: o Book o Reading o Words o pictures Is able to correctly hold the book Follow text directionality Understands that a story is being told through pictures and words Able to differentiate between text and illustrations.

Practitioner: Defining CONCEPT(S) 1:1 correspondence Differentiates between letters/words/symbols (period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, quotation marks etc) Able to follow text directionality from simple 1 line per page text to 2 lines of text per page and able to follow text to the next page Identify author and illustrator Understands that the pictures and words work together to tell a story Listens to E-books Essential DETAILS -Is able to point to the words as someone correctly reads them and understands that words have multiple letters grouped together. -Is able to distinguish between words and the punctuation marks (does not try to associate a sound or word with the punctuation mark) -is able to identify all 26 letters within the text -Is able to follow text directionality as it gets more complex (moving from 1 line to 2 lines, from one page to another) -Is able to explain the importance of the author and illustrator and their roles in creating the book.

Independent/Expert: Defining CONCEPT(S) Understand and correctly read basic punctuation (period, exclamation mark, question mark, commas, quotation marks etc) Utilize basic non fiction text features (captions, labels, picture glossary etc.) Understands that the pictures may support the text by adding additional information that is not directly stated in the text

Essential DETAILS -Is able to hold the book the right way (right side up, cover/title page at the beginning) in order to interact with the book. -Is able to move their fingers left to right to represent the text directionality -Is able to identify some alphabet letters in the text.

Essential DETAILS -when reading is able to notice the basic punctuation which will help change/influence their perception of the text -attends to basic non fiction text features to help enhance their reading and understanding of the text -Notices that more information that is not necessarily stated in the text can be found from the different non fiction text features as well as the basic illustrations in pieces of fiction.

So what? What is important to understand about this? -If students do not understand the basic concepts of print they will never become successful independent readers!
