Week 4 Trying VS Trusting Galatians 3:15-29 In todays lesson we will finish Galatians chapter 3:15-29, but before we do we will

look at Galatians 3:5-10 again. Do you receive Gods Promise of righteousness by trying to obey the law or through trust in Jesus?
5

I ask you again, does God give you the Holy Spirit and work miracles among you because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Christ.6 In the same way, Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith. 7 The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.8 Whats more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would declare the Gentiles to be righteous because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, All nations will be blessed through you. 9 So all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith. NLT Righteousness is the blessing Abraham received because of his faith (verses 6,9) Righteousness is the promise of God given to those who place their trust in Jesus. It is given as a gift of grace apart from your obedience to the law. God proclaimed the Good News of His promise long ago when He told Abraham, People of all nations will be blessed (made righteous) through you. (verse 8) What is the promise of Righteousness? Righteousness (Strongs 46): Innocent; free from all guilt or blame; justified It is the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous in the eye of the law. In addition to the pardon of sin, justification declares that all the claims of the law are satisfied. The law is not relaxed or set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law (Rom. 5:1-10). It proceeds on the crediting to the believer by God himself of the perfect righteousness, of Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:3-9). Justification is not the forgiveness of a man without righteousness, but a declaration that he possesses a righteousness which perfectly and forever satisfies the law, namely, Christ's righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 4:6-8). www.christiananswers.net/dictionary/justification.html: Bible Encyclopedia Gods promise of righteousness means: You are Innocent!

You are free from all guilt or blame! You are Justified! All your sins are pardoned and God accepts and treats you as righteous in the eye of the law. All the demands the law put on you are completely satisfied and fulfilled in Jesus You are declared by God to be entitled to all the rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law God, Himself, credits you with the perfect righteousness of Jesus! God declares that you possess a righteousness that perfectly and forever satisfies the law! You are qualified for all of Gods blessings, not because of you trying to obey the law, but because of your trust in Jesus! Relationship- trusting Jesus and His promise of righteousness

So then, those who are people of faith are blessed and made happy and favored by God [as partners in fellowship] with the believing and trusting Abraham. Those who trust in Jesus and believe that He made them righteous apart from their good works, are made blessed, happy, and favored by God Religious Law-trying to be made righteous through obedience to the Law
10

And all who depend on the Law [who are seeking to be justified by obedience to the Law] are under a curse and doomed to disappointment AMP Those who depend on their obedience to the law to be righteous are under a curse (condemnation) and doomed to disappointment The Law did not cancel the Promise of God
15

Dear brothers and sisters, heres an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case. 16 God gave the promises to Abraham and his child. And notice that the Scripture doesnt say to his children, as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says to his childand that, of course, means Christ. 17 This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. NLT Verse 16: God did not give His promises to Abraham and his natural children, He gave His promise to Abraham and the seed that would come through him, which is Jesus. This means its not Abrahams natural children who would receive the promise of righteousness, but rather Abrahams spiritual children-those who placed their faith in Jesus. The covenant was made with Jesus, so that man could not mess it up. God did not require any works from man, they only had to accept His promise by trusting Jesus. The promise God gave to Abraham and to Jesus is found in Galatians 3:7-9: Gods promise was that He would declare the Gentiles to be righteous because of their faith in

Jesus. He proclaimed this Good News when He said All nations will be blessed through you. Verse 17 says, just because the law was given to Moses 430 years later after God had made this promise, does not cancel Gods original promise to make you righteous through faith in Jesus. If it did, God would be breaking His promise.

18

For if the inheritance [of the promise depends on observing] the Law [as these false teachers would like you to believe], it no longer [depends] on the promise; however, God gave it to Abraham [as a free gift solely] by virtue of His promise. AMP False teachers are those who teach that inheriting Gods promised blessing of righteousness depends on you obeying Gods law. But the truth is it depends on God keeping His promise. Then why was the law given? Galatians 3:18-21 New Living Translation (NLT)
18

For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting Gods promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise. 19 Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. 20 Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.21 Is there a conflict, then, between Gods law and Gods promises? Absolutely not! If the law could give us new life, we could be made right with God by obeying it. 22 But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive Gods promise of freedom only by believing in Jesus Christ. If you could inherit Gods promise of righteousness by trying to keep the law then it wouldnt come as a result of simply accepting Gods promise. The law was given so that people could see that they could never be made righteous by trying to obey it in their own strength-they needed a Savior! If the law was never given, the Good News of the promise would never have been realized. Man had to see that their self-righteousness, their best effort, could never qualify them to be declared righteous before God. So they could give up trying and simply accept Gods promise to them through Jesus! If obeying the law could give you life, then God wouldnt have needed to give you His promise.

The Law leads us to Jesus

23

Now before the faith came, we were perpetually guarded under the Law, kept in custody in preparation for the faith that was destined to be revealed (unveiled, disclosed), 24 So that the Law served [to us Jews] as our trainer [our guardian, our guide to Christ, to lead us] until Christ [came], that we might be justified (declared righteous, put in right standing with God) by and through faith. AMP The Law was only given to lead you to Jesus, so that you could be made righteous through faith in Him! Religion divides us by our doctrine and self-righteousness, but relationship unites us by making us all equal in Christ!
25 26

And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian. For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and Gods promise to Abraham belongs to you. NLT Religious law teaches that it is up to man and his good works to be acceptable and pleasing to God. Religion places value and importance on man based on their performance. If they do everything right then theyll have a blessed life, but if something is wrong in their life, they must have done something wrong. It creates shame in peoples hearts and causes them to hide. On the other hand, relationship with Jesus sets us free from the law and defining ourselves by our ability to keep it. We no longer need the law to determine whether or not we qualify or whether or not we are better or worse then someone else. Because we are all equally loved, approved, blessed, children of God through faith in Jesus! And we begin to judge each other as wonderful and righteous in Jesus, no matter what we may be going through. As Gods children, we put on Jesus perfect righteousness! We were made one spirit with Him, which makes us all one with each other! Comparison and competition ends because we are all just like Jesus- heirs of Gods promise of righteousness! We are all Gods favorite, righteous, beloved son or daughter, and when we truly believe that, we dont need a law to guide us. We are led by Gods Spirit of love, and the fruit of His righteousness comes out in our lives!
