Having done field research among the Bisa of Lake Bangweulu </wiki/Lake_Bangweulu> followed by research in Kabwe </wiki/Kabwe> (Zambia </wiki/Zambia>), he went on to the University of Manchester </wiki/University_of_Manchester> to study with Max Gluckman </wiki/Max_Gluckman> and Clyde Mitchell </wiki/Clyde_Mitchell>, and received his Ph.D in 1969.
