Technical Specifications
LF Series Sprinkler
The Rain Bird LF Series Sprinkler is built rugged to withstand the harsh conditions in
agricultural applications. It has been designed to combine the advantages of an impact
sprinkler with stream height exibility that delivers precise, uniform and unrivaled water
distribution.
This low-ow sprinkler series oers full-circle operation with a variety of color-coded
nozzles and deector inserts that snap into place with the push of a nger, making
accommodations to every setup a snap.
Weighted drive disk provides long dwell time between stream interruptions to achieve the
maximum distance of throw
The deflector is designed to provide a fan pattern to optimize uniformity
During impact, the Precision Jet (PJ) spoon directs the water stream into the field
preventing erosion at the riser base
Specifications
Most Robust Sprinkler in its Class
Patented Ceramic Radial Bearing (CRB) is longer lasting than conventional counterparts
Patented Flow Dependent Brake (FDB) stabilizes rotation time over a range of water pressures
Provides consistent performance at high temperatures and below freezing
Deflector made of composite engineered thermoplastic - provides dimensional stability,
resists wear caused by dirty water conditions
Drive disk made of engineered thermoplastic - shields and protects sprinkler from freezing,
wind-blown and water-borne debris
Springs and pin composed of high-grade stainless steel for corrosion resistance
Ultraviolet (UV) stabilizer protects the sprinkler from the sun
Easy to Use
Sprinkler is comprised of: the drive unit, body, deflector and nozzle
Each piece can be purchased separately
EZ-twist tabs allow simple removal of the drive unit; no tools required
Nozzles and deflectors snap in place with the push of a finger
Color-coded nozzles and deflectors allow easy identification
Weed Guard blocks weeds from growing into the sprinkler and stopping the rotations
Accessories
Edge Guard (Road Guard) precisely directs water back to the field
It can also be used as a part circle on edges and row ends
Splash Guard fits over the top of the sprinkler and directs water downwards. When removing
or replacing the sprinkler, allowing users to change or clean nozzles without getting soaked
Stream Splitter splits the water to avoid direct water streams into tree trunks, equipment,
and general areas that do not need watering
Operating Range
Pressure: 25 to 60 psi (1.7 to 4.1 bar)
Flow Rate: 0.77 to 4.02 gpm (175 to 913 l/hr)

Distribution Uniformity
Distribution Uniformity
For Sprinkler Irrigation
Distribution Uniformity (DU) is a measure of how
evenly water is applied across a eld during
irrigation. For example, if one inch of water is
applied in one part of the eld and only half an inch
is applied in another part of the eld, that is poor
DU. DU is expressed as a percentage between 0
and 100%, although it is virtually impossible to
attain 100% in practice. DUs of less than 70% are
considered poor, DUs of 70 - 90% are good, and
DUs greater than 90% are excellent. In short, bad
DU means that either too much water is applied,
costing unnecessary expense, or too little water is
applied, causing stress to crops.
FIGURE 1: Depiction of irrigation resulting in poor DU and excessive watering.
Irrigation Eciency is dierent than DU. Irrigation
Eciency refers to how well the irrigator matches
water applications to crop water need, and
generally answers the question of how much to apply, and how often. This is generally
In Figure 1, the farmer has irrigated to suciently
referred to as irrigation scheduling. For instance if a crop needs 24 per year and the
water the entire eld. The poor DU, indicated by the
irrigator applies close to that amount (less any distribution ineciencies) then the
uneven inltrated water, has resulted in excessive
irrigation eciency would be high. In contrast, if the irrigator applied 48 per year with a
watering in some areas of the eld. That is, more
high DU system, and the crop really only needed 24, the irrigation eciency would be

very low, nearly 50%.
crop.
Obviously, there must be good DU before there can be good irrigation eciency, if the
crop is to be suciently watered. So although good DU alone is no guarantee of good
irrigation eciency, it is a good place to start.
Following are prole views of two adjacent sprinklers in a eld and the root zone
underneath them. The spray patterns from the adjacent sprinklers must overlap to result
in the same amount of water falling in all parts of the eld.
In the gures, the horizontal, dashed line depicts the depth of the actual soil water
decit at irrigation. This is the amount of water that the grower applies to soak into the
soil to satisfy crop water use requirements. The dark brown area depicts the actual depth
of water inltrated during the irrigation. Over irrigation is indicated whenever the actual
depth of irrigation is below the soil water decit line (the horizontal, dashed line).
Conversely, under-irrigation is indicated whenever the actual depth of irrigation line is
above the soil water decit.

Distribution Uniformity
Figure 4 depicts good irrigation. Both the DU is high (even application) and the depth is
right (irrigation efficiency). The field has been slightly over irrigated but this is probably
necessary to leach salts from the soil profile. In this case, the farmer has applied the right
amount of water and has not been forced to waste money to over irrigate, nor has he
been forced to sacrifice revenue by under irrigating and producing a substandard crop.
DU may be determined theoretically by using sprinkler uniformity software, or it can be
determined by taking actual irrigation application measurements in the field.
In either case, The Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT) has software and guidelines to
help farmers and designers achieve the best DU possible. More information can be
found on CITs website http://cati.csufresno.edu/cit as well as

Frost Protection
encased tissue of the plant. The degree of protection is greater than with undertree, but more water per acre is required. Ice is an excellent
thermal conductor, so the temperature of the surface of the ice encasement is rapidly reflected at the plant tissue. Maintaining a temperature of
31-32 at the ice surface depends upon supplying water to that surface at regular rapid intervals to maintain an ice/water interface there. As long
as a film of water surrounds ice-coated vegetation, the temperature of the ice and vegetation cannot go below 32 F.
Therefore, the frequency of wetting and the speed of rotation of the sprinklers are of great importance in obtaining the maximum protection
from the minimum amount of water. For example, with an application rate of 0.11 inch/hour (50.0 gpm per acre), with a wind 3.4 mph, an air
temperature of 32 F, and a wet bulb temperature of
29 F, a leaf edge drops from 37 F to 29 F in about 50

Impact Sprinklers
Impact Sprinkler Head Types:
Spoon-Driven, Wedge-Driven,
and Precision Jet (PJ).
Principal of Operation
On spoon-driven sprinklers, (Figure 1) the
water passes through the body (1), then
through the nozzle (2), past the sloping vane (3),
through the window (4) into the curve of the
spoon (5). The reactionary force of the water
leaving the spoon drives the arm out of the
stream and away from the nozzle. The tension
of the arm spring (6) then pulls the arm back
into the original position where it impacts on
the bridge or nozzle, causing the sprinkler to turn. The impact is accentuated by the
thickness and angle of the leading edge of the sloping vane.
This impact is only sucient to cause a small degree of travel so that the rotation of
sprinkler is uniform and relatively slow (one-half to three minutes per revolution,
depending on pressure and size of sprinkler and nozzle). Slow rotation keeps wear on
moving parts at a minimum and prolongs the life of the sprinkler.
Wedge-drive sprinklers (such as the Rain Bird 14V) operate in the same manner except
that the wedge rather than a spoon serves to force the arm in or out of the water stream.
The chief advantages of the wedge are that it prevents an excessive amount of water
from being deposited just below the sprinkler, and that it provides a greater driving force
that rotates these sprinklers satisfactorily with smaller size nozzles.

Adjusting
Screw & Spring
Bearing washers are composed of material which provides the friction necessary for the
successful operation of the sprinkler. As stated previously, Rain Bird sprinklers are WATER
LUBRICATED and all materials used in their construction are anti-rust and anti-friction
metals, except the bearing washer.
Nozzle
ADJ NOZZLE
3 Improper Pressure
Rain Bird sprinklers are designed and adjusted to operate over fairly wide pressure
ranges depending on the model. When operating on pressure that is either too high or
too low, the performance will be unsatisfactory both as to sprinkler rotation and water
distribution. Operating a nozzle at too low of a pressure will result in large droplets and a
distribution of most of the water around the outer edge of the pattern. If the pressure is
extremely low the sprinkler may fail to rotate. In the case of too high a pressure, the
nozzle will tend toward misting and even slight wind currents will carry the water away
from the desired pattern. Extremely
high pressure could cause the

the sprinkler body, causing the
and Gauge - RBGL 100
sprinkler to stand still or turn
backwards. In general, as nozzle size
increases, so must the pressure for
desired performance.
4 Measuring Water Pressure
The nozzle pressure of a sprinkler is
measured with a pilot tube while the
sprinkler is in operation.
The pitot tube is used with a
pressure gauge a shown in Figure 2.
When used to measure the
operating pressure of a sprinkler,
where more than one sprinkler is
operating on one pipe line or lateral,
the curved end the tube is inserted
into the stream 1/16" from nozzle.
When measuring the operating
pressure the curve end of the tube
must be held approximately 1/16
out from the nozzle opening and in
the center of the stream. (Figure 3)
This is done so that the ow of water

Move the curve end of the tube back and forth through the stream until the highest
pressure is recorded. Do not insert the pitot into the orice.

All pressures indicated in this manual and our catalog are pressures at the sprinkler,
which may dier considerably from pressures at a distant source from which water is
supplied. Small diameter pipe or hose will reduce pressure considerably. Failure of a
sprinkler to perform properly when pressure is lower than recommended for a particular
size nozzle may be overcome by changing to a smaller size nozzle. However, it is not

A good rule of thumb for adjusting a bent arm is to bend it so that when the arm is at

Bearing Spring
Arm weights for some sprinkler mo els are available from Rain Bird distributors and
dealers in order to adjust for proper spring tension. To check spring tension with the arm
weight, hang the weight over the outer lip of the spoon, with the sprinkler held in a
sideways position. The weight should deect the leading edge of the spoon below the
nozzle opening but not beyond the hex point on the outside of the nozzle. If an arm
weight is not available check the arm tension with that of a new sprinkler or with one
that is operating satisfactorily.

on through the hole on the left from the back
side. The end of the spring is now pointing
toward you. Bend over end (approximately 1/4)
using needle nose pliers (see Figure 7). The
spring wire is normally longer than required.
Hold arm with spoon end pointing toward you

of the spring at the center line of the arm. Now
install arm in body as shown in Figure 7. Drive

arm around as far back as it will go, away from
nozzle and feed upper end of spring into the
hole that is farthest from the nozzle. Then feed through the other hole so it extends
about 1/8 and bend this extended spring end over sharply to clinch. Check the
assembled spring to be sure that the spring end does not rub against the center bearing
of the arm or the spring coils when it rotates (see Figure 7).

Model No. 25
Sand-Cast Trip Models-Bronze Color
The trip spring (Figure 12) is about the only item in this assembly that may need to be
replaced after extended use. To reach this spring, pull o the whole assembly after rst
removing clip. Cut the spring loose from the upper trip casting and replace with a new
one in the same position.
After bending the spring, be sure there is not too much wire left. If there is, cut the end
o so that it wont rub against the lower trip casting. The assembly must be put together
before it goes on the shaft.
Be sure spacer washers are in place as shown in Figure 12. Some water causes lime
deposits, which should be cleaned o. Lime deposits can cause the mechanism to stick
after a few years use.
Model No. 25
Powered Metal trip Models-Yellow Color
Removing and replacing the trip spring for these sprinklers is the same in every respect
as for sand cast trip models expect that the spring is held in place by a preform on one
leg of the spring. No bending and cutting of the wire is required. The new spring is
installed by pressing the spring leg with the preform through the appropriate hole and
then following the above instructions for the sand-cast trip models.
Models No. 35 and No. 65D
Although somewhat dierent in their parts, the operation of these models is basically the
same as the No. 25.

Micro-Bird Spinners
Micro-Bird II
Spinners
The Micro-Bird II Spinner is a low-flow, micro-sprinkler ideal for applications of mature trees, greenhouses, nurseries, gardens, and landscapes.
Tall Bridge and superior plastic design reduces wear and stalling.
Unique spinner design provides a superior wetted pattern.
Two-Step thread configuration to accommodate both large and
small sizes of distribution tubing.
Four color-coded nozzle bodies for easy identification.
340 pattern design provides uniform coverage without wetting tree trunks.
Low 10 trajectory angle to fight wind drift.
Filtration mesh hole size should be approximately 10 times smaller than
nozzle size.
