Notions de Base n 4

LE STYLE INDIRECT
Comme en franais, lorsque lon rapporte les propos de quelquun en anglais, et que lon a donc recours au style indirect, il faut
tre attentif :
1. au temps de la phrase, et celui du verbe introducteur
2. lordre des mots
3. aux pronoms personnels et aux possessifs utiliss
4. certains complments de temps ou de lieu (loignement spatio-temporel si le verbe
introducteur est au pass)
5. la ponctuation (suppression des guillemets et points dinterrogation/dexclamation)
Les changements 3, 4 et 5 font surtout appel au bon sens. Ils ne seront pas tudis de faon exhaustive dans cette fiche.

1. PROBLEMES DE TEMPS
Lorsque le verbe de la principale, celui qui sert rapporter, est au pass, il y a concordance des temps, (sauf pour les vrits
gnrales, universelles ou scientifiques), cest--dire que le temps du verbe de la subordonne est repouss dun cran dans le
pass selon le schma suivant :

REMARQUE: Lorsquune phrase est au plus-que-parfait au style indirect, il sagit de reprer les indications temporelles
pour dterminer le temps au style direct.

Pour les temps composs et groupes verbaux comprenant plusieurs auxiliaires on tiendra compte du temps de lauxiliaire le plus
gauche.

2. ORDRE DES MOTS : Le problme se pose surtout lorsquil sagit de rapporter des questions et des ordres.
QUESTIONS INDIRECTES
Lorsque lon rapporte une question, lordre des mots dans la question rapporte est celui de laffirmation.
On replace lauxiliaire aprs le sujet sil y a eu inversion, ou lon supprime DO, DOES, DID en mettant le verbe au temps qui convient (comme
pour rpondre aux questions, voir NB3 2 partie)
On conserve linterrogatif de la question. Il faut introduire IF (ou WHETHER, dans un style plus soutenu) au dbut dune question laquelle on
rpond YES/ NO.
Noter labsence de guillemets et de point dinterrogation.
Whats his name ?
Will he come tomorrow ?
Where do you live ?
Why does he go to Paris every week ?
When did the new neighbours move in ?
Did they buy a lot of furniture ?

She asked if he would come the next day.

ORDRES / IMPERATIF
Be quiet, children !

=> Mr Black told the children to be quiet.


= construction infinitive quelque soit le temps du verbe introducteur
=> Mr Black says (that) the children must be quiet.
=> Mr Black told the children (that) they must be quiet.

CAS PARTICULIERS
Autres emplois de la CONSTRUCTION INFINITIVE.
What must I do ?

Jim does not know what he must do.
Quand le sujet de la principale, ici Jim, est le mme que celui de la subordonne, ici he (reprise deJim), on peut utiliser la construction
infinitive:

Ill visit her soon.

He promises (that) he will visit her soon.
