Creating Assembly of Toy Plane

Open SOLIDEDGE Assembly In Assembly, we bring in different part in the graphic window. The first part become the reference part and all the part are assembled (locked in X, Y, Z) with respect to this part to build the assembly

Click on Part Library on the left hand corner to open the folder containing the parts

Left click and select the Fuselage. Drag it to the graphic area place it. The position of the Fuselage differs as per the modeling method. This example is a sample. Similar method can be used to achieved final orientation
The first part you place in an assembly becomes the base component. Solid Edge places this part fixed, using a Ground relationship. No other relationships need to be applied to this part to fully position it in the assembly.

When you take the cursor on the part the color of this part changes

When you select the part it turns green. Adjustment wheel appears on the part for adjusting the part

You can move the wheel by clicking and holding to the centre of the wheel and dragging it to desired position by selecting a surface/edge

Click and select the wheel as shown in the image below

Take the cursor near the vertical wheel to highlight it. Click the wheel and it will pop a new angle window

Click 90 in this window to rotate the fuselage.

After rotation the fuselage will look as seen below.

Now click and drag the Lower Wing to bring it in the graphic window. This will pop up a new window for aligning the lower wing with the fuselage. Notice that the FlashFit option is already active by default. You will use FlashFit to define a mate relationship between the top face of the block and the top face of the plate.

Now to assemble the Lower Wing, select the top face of the lower wing

Rotate the assembly by holding down and dragging the middle mouse button and select the face as shown in the image

The Lower Wing automatically aligns itself as can be seen in the image. The orientation may vary based for few.

Next we need to select the central cylinder, for that select the cylinder, in case it is not possible to select the cylinder and instead the face is getting highlighted, stay on the area on the face near the cylinder and the following icon will appear Right Click this icon to open selection options

Choose the Cylinder option for the pull down menu

Similarly select the hole for alignment on the Fuselage as shown in the image below

The first set of holes will align themselves. Now select the next hole in similar way a before. Sometimes the cylindrical surface can be directly selected.

Once completely assembled the lower wing will align itself and it will change color to grey.

Next Select the Stud D6

Bring the part in the graphic window

Click on FlashFit to expand the pull down menu

Select the insert command

Select the front face as shown in the image

Select the inner flat face of hole of the lower wing

Next select the circular face of the stud as shown in the image

Then select the circular surface of the Lower wing to inset the stud in the lower wing

This will automatically align the stud in the hole on the Lower Wing

Repeat the same step for the other D6 pin

Next bring in the landing gear part to assemble

To start assembling this part, select the top face as shown in the image

Then select the cutout surface as highlighted in the following image

The face will automatically align themselves

Then select the circular surface of the hole as highlighted

Then select the circular surface of the stud to align it

Then complete the same for the other hole

This will align the landing gear to the lower wing

Now bring in the Main Axle

Select the circular face of the main axle and the circular surface of the hole of the landing gear

This will align the main axle to the landing gear hole

To give the other relations, switch on the planes by checking the box next to Reference Plane. This will make the assembly planes visible

To switch on planes of the Main Axle, click on the icon as shown below

Click on the icon Show Reference Planes

This will switch on the Planes on Main Axle

As we need 3 Relations to lock a part to the assembly, and we have done the first one, we will now give 2 relations between planes to locate the part

Select the Right Plane of the Main Axle and the Front Plane of the assembly to lock them

For the last Relation select the Front Plane of the Main Axle and the top plane of to align them

The assembled part will look as shown below. Now turn off the assembly planes by un-checking the box Reference Planes

The assembly planes will be switched off

Select the part, right click to open a pull down menu, select Show/Hide Component in this select Reference Planes and un-check the box in front of them to hide them.

The assembled part will appear as in the image below

Now bring in the Wheel component

For assembling the wheel, we will use Insert command to assemble the wheel

Once Insert command is selected, select the face on the wheel as shown

Select the mating surface on the Main Axle as shown

Now we will give the other relation

Select the inner face of the cylinder on the wheel

Select the inner cylinder of the Main Axle to complete the Insert relation

Once defined, the wheel will be aligned in place

Complete the same process for the second wheel.

Bring in the Wheel Axle part in the assembly

Again we will use Inert relation to position this component

Select the lower face of the dome of the wheel axle as first part to assemble

Select the face of the wheel as shown

Now select the circular face of the Wheel Axle

Now select the inner circular face of the wheel

The assembled component will looks as shown in the image below

Complete the second wheel

Now we will fit in the motor

Apply insert constraint

Select the lower face of the motor

Now select the inner face of the Fuselage front counterbore

Next select the circular face of the motor

And the circular face of the Fuselage front counterbore

The assembled motor will be positioned as below

Now bring in the Propeller

Use Flash Fir and select the back face of the propeller

Select the front face of the motor to align them

The 2 faces will mate as shown

Now switch on the assembly planes

Switch on the propeller planes by expanding the menu as shown

The planes will be displayed

Select the Top plane on the propeller

Select the Assembly Top plane

Both the planes will align as shown

Select the Right plane of the propeller

Align it with the Assembly Front plane

The Assembled Propeller will appear as shown

Hide the assembly and Propeller planes

Now bring in the holder part

Assemble it by using Insert command

Select the face on the Holder part

Select the front face of the Propeller

Select he circular face on the holder

Select the circular face on the propeller

The completed Propeller will be as follows

Now we will fit the Vertical Tail part

Select the face on the Vertical Tail as shown

Select the semicircular part on the Fuselage

The component will fit as shown

Use Flip command to invert the Vertical Tail part

Once flipped the part will appear as shown

Now select the flat face of the vertical tail

Select the inner vertical face of the fuselage

Both components will be aligned

Select the horizontal face on the vertical tail as shown

Similarly select the face on the fuselage

The vertical tail will be positioned

Now bring in the horizontal tail

Select the face as on horizontal face as shown

Select the inner horizontal face on the vertical tail part

Both faces will be aligned

Select the vertical face on the horizontal tail part

Select the vertical face on the Vertical Tail part

Both faces will align

Flip the component to align to the Assembly

Now select the faces as shown

By aligning 3 faces on both the components the horizontal tail is completely aligned

Now select the Stud D4

Assemble it using the insert command

Select the faces as shown

The Stud will be assembled

Now we will pattern the stud. Select patten

Click on the part to include in the pattern. Select the stud

Click the green tick mark to accept the selection

Now click on the pattern. Select one of the holes on the lower wing

By clicking on one, the software will detect the pattern and select the other holes

Click on the feature to pattern. Again select the Stud D4 part

Now Click Finish

The Stud D4 part will be patterned

Now bring in the Vertical Crossbar

Select the bottom face of the Vertical Crossbar

Select the top of the Lower wing

Flip the component to align it

The component will position itself

Align the holes of the cross bar with the stud

Once both the holes are aligned, the cross bar will be positioned as below

Repeat the similar process for the other side

Now assemble the stud to the crossbar

Use insert command to position it

Fix the other 3 studs. Here Pattern cannot be used as the holes are on 2 different parts. So assembly all 4 studs by using Insert is the easiest way.

Bring in the Upper Wing

Align the lower face of the Upper Wing to the top face of one of the crossbar

Flip the component if required.

Now select the cylindrical face of the Upper Wing to align them to the studs

Select the appropriate studs to align the wing in correct orientation.

Repeat the same process for the other stud as shown

The correctly assembled upper wing will appear similar to shown in the image below
