Closing date for applications will be 4.00pm Fri 5th July 2013 Interviews will take place on Tuesday 30th July 2013 Further Particulars: Introduction The School of Art, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, seeks applications from practising fine artists for a Fine Art Fellowship under the terms of the Wheatley Bequest. The Fellowship The Fellowship has been created by Birmingham City University in conjunction with the Trustees of the Wheatley Estate and is the outcome of a generous bequest by the late Richard Wheatley. The Fellowship offers an exciting opportunity for an artist at the commencement of or at a critical point in their professional career, to further develop his or her practice, based in the School of Fine Art. Some opportunity for teaching will be given and the successful applicant will be expected to become a full and active member of the academic and research community within the Department. Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) BIAD, a Faculty of Birmingham City University, is one of the largest Institutions of its kind in the country. It provides art and design courses at pre-degree, degree, postgraduate and research levels for over 3500 full and part time students. The Departments of Fashion, Textiles and Three Dimensional Design, Visual Communication, Bournville Centre for Visual Arts, School of Jewellery and School of Art are located across four sites at the exciting new faculty building at Parkside, Bournville, Vittoria Street and Margaret Street.

The School of Art Housed in the city centre at the stunning Margaret St School of Art (1875), the School comprises one of the largest undergraduate courses in the faculty, approximately 240 BA (Hons) Fine Art students, approximately 120 BA (Hons) Art and Design students. It maintains a unique, highly rated international Arts Based Maters Programme (ABM) which houses strong programmes in MA Fine Art, MA Arts and Education, MA Arts Practice and Education, MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice, MA Queer Studies in Arts and Culture, MA Arts & Project Management, MA History of Art and Design, MA Art & Design, and the MA Media Arts Philosophy Practice. The PhD-Research environment is rated as world-leading. Under the auspices of the Centre for Fine Art Research (CFAR), it embraces contemporary fine art, philosophy, discourse and immersive art practice, with inventive intersections of old and new technologies: painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed reality labs, archive and installation, electronicdigital acoustics, media arts and the sciences, alongside the questions of embodiment incorporeality and the queering of sense. Currently there are 22 PHD students working across five research streams:

Art in the Public Sphere Dirty Theory, Immersive Art, Wild Science Electronic Media Art Philosophy Practice Ars Erotica and the Queering of Sense Interpretation Archive Documentation

Duration Normally, for 10 calendar months commencing in October though there is some flexibility in both duration and commencement. The Fellowship will normally conclude with an exhibition of work produced during the Fellowship Value

An award of approximately 9000 will be made. This is paid on a monthly basis at a rate of 900 per month. The award is exempt from taxation and other deductions.

Accommodation The Fellow will be allocated a studio within the Margaret Street building. Additional space will be available during July and August when BA students vacate the building. Access to the general teaching and learning resources normally available for BA and MA students in Margaret Street will be available, including use of the library and use of the extensive workshops. Additional resources within BIAD will be available by arrangement. Access to the studio will normally be:Term time Mon Thurs 08.00 19.30 Fri 08.00 18.00 Vacation time 08.00 18.00 Materials Fellows will normally be responsible for providing their own materials. Conditions Fellows will:

Be required to commit the majority of their time to the Fellowship and to work in and from the studios of the School of Art in Margaret Street, Birmingham. Undertake some teaching within the School. Be part of the academic and research community working within Margaret Street and should be willing to give reasonable access to staff and students of the University to his or her work. Be subject to the Code of Conduct for the use of the Grade 1 listed building and Health and Safety Regulations of BCU applicable at the time.

The University reserves the right to require the removal of offensive/illegal items. Method of Application Closing date for applications will be 4.00pm Fri 5th July 2013 Interviews will take place on Tuesday 30th July 2013 The application form should be accompanied by visual evidence as powerpoint on a disk or a DVD, with accompanying information such as scale, materials, duration etc, and a written statement of not more than 1000 words.

Selection The Selection Panel will compromise staff representatives of the School of Art and a member of the Wheatley family or their nominee. Short-listed candidates will be required to make a 15-minute presentation in front of the panel on their work, reasons for application, and development of work on the fellowship. Criteria Selection will be based upon the quality of the work and interview. Good interpersonal skills are essential. The decisions of the Selection Panel are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
