Priority Reach/ Site H M L Town 1 X T3.01-B Monkton Project/Strategy Description River Corridor Protection. Working with VLT (Bob Heiser) and Michelle Smith, LCA has assisted Phil Russell to develop a conservation easement and ~13-acre CREP riparian buffer at the Phil Russell property - 227-acre farm in Monkton/ Hinesburg (former conventional dairy now pasturing free-range, grass-fed Angus). The riparian buffer has dimensions nearly identical to the geomorphically-defined river corridor, will be established through CREP funding, and will be maintained as a defined Special Treatment Area of the VLT easement after the 15-year CREP contract expires. The CREP project will also involve livestock exclusion and provisions for alternate livestock watering sources. Stressors addressed Channel Erosion, Nutrient Loading, Thermal Stress

T3.02 Monkton

Gully Stabilization. Last Resort Farm. Proposed bioengineering techniques and NRCS standard stonelined swales to treat five gullies draining the northern steep valley slopes along Pond Brook. Livestock Exclusion. Tracy Farm. (Priority is low, because the Tracy's reportedly sold most/all of their cows in 2012). Wetland Restoration. Tracy Farm. Abundant (priorconverted) hydric soils indicating potential for wetland restoration. Livestock Exclusion. Phillips Farm. Livestock with direct access to lower reach T3.03 downstream of the States Prison Hollow Rd box culvert. Forested buffers are absent. Wetland Restoration. Phillips Farm. Abundant (priorconverted) hydric soils adjacent to Pond Brook and rightbank tributary, indicating potential for wetland restoration.

Priority Reach/ Site H M L Town 5 X T3.02, T3.03 Monkton Project/Strategy Description Livestock Exclusion, Buffer Plantings. Barnyard improvements. Cota Farm. Several acres of pasture where livestock have direct access to tributaries of the Pond Brook. Barnyard improvements could include roof runoff collection & diversion, provision of alternate (drilled) water supply (potential Black Leg concern associated with existing irrigation pond). Wetland Restoration. Cota Farm. Abundant (priorconverted) hydric soils adjacent to tributaries of Pond Brook, indicating potential for wetland restoration. Moderate slopes may limit feasibility. Stabilized Stream Crossings. Willowell Foundation. Field equipment fords on two tributaries to Pond Brook opportunities for stabilized stream crossings to reduce sedimentation in the stream Forest Management Practices workshop. Demonstration projects for Pond Brook watershed forest land owners hosted by nearby Little Hogback Community Forest. Forest Management Practices workshop. Demonstration projects for Pond Brook watershed forest land owners hosted by New Leaf Organic Farm Livestock Exclusion. Buffer Enhancements. Multiple ruminants (e.g., llamas) pastured with access to tributaries to Pond Brook. Stressors addressed Pathogens, Channel Erosion, Nutrient Loading

Priority Reach/ Site H M L Town 11 X T3.04 Monkton Project/Strategy Description Address stormwater runoff to fields from forests and road ditches. Monkton TH #3 (Bristol Road). Field and forest owned by Layn Farm. During intense rains, stormwater runs off the forested slopes and is captured by the road ditch, conveyed under the road to swales/ intermittent tributaries that drain directly to Pond Brook. Significant erosion of sediment from the corn field despite (narrow) grass swales. Improved barnyard practices. Layn Farm. Including manure management (2nd pit for heifers); possible sileage leachate; roof runoff collection & diversion. Stressors addressed Pathogens, Sediment Loading, Nutrient Loading

Improved field practices. Layn Farm. Wider grass swales, increased setbacks to address frequent inundation along field edges adjacent to Pond Brook, notill practices, interseeding, broadcast cover cropping, crop rotation. Improved onsite septic system maintenance. Minimize residential applications of nutrients.
