Navigating Cisco Prime Common Services Tasks in LMS 4.1

Cisco Prime Common Services (CS) provides the application infrastructure for all existing Cisco Prime network management solutions for them to share a common model for data storage, user login, user role definitions, user access privileges, and security protocols. This chapter provides the mapping of CS tasks in LMS 4.1. It explains:

Server Tasks Software Center Tasks Device and Credential Tasks Group Administration Tasks

Server Tasks
This section provides information on the Common Services Server tasks in LMS 4.1.

You can add and delete users, edit user profiles and modify the logged in user credentials Setting up security certificate Admin > Trust Cisco Prime LMS Portal > Management:Local Server > Common Services > Server > Security > Single Server Name > Certificate Setup Certificate Setup Cisco Prime allows you to create security certificates that enable SSL communication between your client browser and management server. Self signed certificates are valid for five years from the date of creation. When the certificate expires, the browser prompts you to install the certificate again from the server where you have installed Cisco Prime. Peer Server Account Setup helps you create users who can programmatically login to CiscoPrime LMS Servers and perform certain tasks. These users should be set up to enable communication among multiple Cisco Prime LMS Servers. Users created using Peer Server Account Setup can authenticate processes running on remote Cisco Prime LMS Servers.

LMS 3.2 Navigation Cisco Prime LMS Portal > Common Services > Server > Security > Multi-Server Trust Management > System Identity Setup

LMS 4.1 Navigation Admin > Trust Management:Multi Server > System Identity Setup

Description Communication between multiple Lms Servers is enabled by a trust model addressed by certificates and shared secrets. System Identity setup helps you to create a "trust" user on servers that are part of a multi-server setup. This user enables communication among servers that are part of a domain. There can only be one System Identity User for each machine. You can add the certificate of another Cisco Prime LMS server into its trusted store. This will allow a Cisco Prime LMS Server to communicate with another using SSL. If a Cisco Prime LMS server needs to communicate with another Lms Server, it must possess the certificate of the other server. You can add certificates of any number of peer Lms Servers to the trusted store. You can add, delete and view the details of the client certificates. With Single Sign-On (SSO), you can use your browser session to transparently navigate to multiple Lms Servers without authenticating to each of them. Communication among multiple Lms Servers is enabled by a trust model addressed by Certificates and shared secrets.

Topology Services displays the network topology of the devices discovered by LMS, through Topology Maps. Besides these Maps, the application includes numerous reports that help you to view the physical and logical connectivity in details. Bandwidth Utilization is the measure of traffic flowing across a link. LMS highlights bandwidth utilization across links, in the Topology maps. It computes the bandwidth utilization by taking the best estimate of the mean physical layer network utilization on the links, during the sampling time interval. In Topology Map, LMS can differentiate the links using colors, based on the bandwidth utilized by them. You can customize the filters to display bandwidth utilization.

Description A Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) allows you to create logical broadcast domains that can span across a single switch or multiple switches, regardless of physical positioning. A VLAN contains a group of devices on one or more LANs. You can create amd delete VLANs using VLAN Configuration wizard.

Creating VLANs

Cisco Prime LMS Portal > Campus Manager > Configuration > VLAN Configuration > Create

Configuration > Workflows:VLAN > Configure VLAN

Allows you to create a VLAN by selecting devices or entities to be included in the VLAN. Domain Selector helps you to select devices in Switch Clouds and VTP Domains. A Private VLAN (PVLAN) is a VLAN that isolates devices at Layer 2 (L2), from other ports within the same broadcast domain or subnet. PVLAN segregates traffic at L2 and converts a broadcast segment into a non-broadcast multi-access segment. To create a Private VLAN, you must designate one VLAN as primary and another as either isolated, community, or two-way community VLAN. Then, you can assign additional VLANs as secondary VLANs. After creating primary and secondary VLANs you must associate the secondary VLANs to the respective primary VLANs.

You can manage thresholds for:

Setting Priorities

Cisco Prime LMS Portal > Device Fault Manager > Configuration > Polling and Thresholds > Setting Priorities

Monitor > Fault Settings: Setup > Priority Settings

System-defined groups have a higher priority than customizable groups, but you can change the priorities as needed. This is helpful, for example, when you configure specific customizable groups of interest and want to give them the highest priority. Changes to polling parameters, setting priorities and threshold values do not take effect until you apply changes, thereby reconfiguring LMS to use the new values. Similarly, after you resume devices or device components that were suspended from polling, you must apply changes for the device elements to be polled. Your login determines whether you can perform this operation.

Cisco Prime LMS 3.2 Applications Removed from LMS 4.1

Cisco Prime Assistant, part of Cisco Prime LMS 3.2, is a web-based tool that provides workflows to help you resolve network management and deployment issues. A workflow is a compilation of tasks that help you deploy Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution (LMS) servers and troubleshoot your network. The Cisco Prime Assistant Engine, which works in the back end, executes the workflows and allows you to navigate among the tasks. This Cisco Prime Assistant application is not available from LMS 4.1.

Description The Conflicting device state occurs if the sysObjectID in the device and that in the Device and Credential Repository do not match. Normal devices are devices that have been successfully contacted by LMS, or the device has contacted LMS at least once (polling, successful job completion, Syslog receipt). This indicates that this was a real device in the network (at one point in time). This state does not guarantee that you have had a successful Inventory and Configuration Collection.

Device Management task Viewing Conflicting Cisco Prime LMS Portal > RME > Devices > Device Types Device Management > Conflicting Device Types Viewing Normal Devices Cisco Prime LMS Portal > RME > Devices > Device Management > Normal Devices

Viewing Pending Devices

Cisco Prime LMS Portal > RME > Devices > Device Management > Pending Devices

When the device is added to LMS, device management moves the device into this state, and invokes all the registered application tasks such as Inventory Collection and Configuration collection. Based on the results of the tasks, the device moves to one of these statesPre-deployed, Normal or Aliased. The Pending state is a transient state and no device will be in this state for any significant time. If the devices are in this state for a longer time, you can suspend the devices and resubmit for managing.

Working with pre-deployed devices

Cisco Prime LMS Portal > RME > Devices > Device Management > Pre-deployed Devices

In the Pre-deployed device state, the device has never been contacted by LMS through protocols such as SNMP, Telnet, or SSH. If LMS contacts the device through tasks such as Inventory polling, Configuration polling, and receiving syslog messages, the device moves to a Normal state.

Cisco Prime LMS Portal > RME > Admin > Reports > Archive Settings You can change the default directory location for reports archival on the LMS server.
