FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR For more than three decades Outfest has been a leader in LGBT rights and cultural expression, ensuring that LGBT stories are created, shared and protected: stories that depict the rich diversity of who we are as individuals, families and communities; stories that educate, entertain and inspire. This years Outfest Los Angeles is no exception. Our Gala features range from the humorous writing of David Sedaris in C.O.G. to the slow pace of a Texas town in PIT STOP, from the injustices against LGBT people in GOD LOVES UGANDA to the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop in REACHING FOR THE MOON, and finally to the rallying activism of ALICE WALKER: BEAUTY IN TRUTH. Our 31st edition featuring 155 films from 28 countries soars with new talent and old friends. Each section of the festival promises an extraordinary experience. Our international voices span the globe, with documentaries and narrative features from Poland, China and Nepal (a first!) including award-winners BWAKAW and IN THE NAME OF... A number of Outfest alumni return with delightful new films: Rose Troche, Jamie Babbit, Del Shores, Darren Stein, Rodney Evans and more. And where else will you catch the Los Angeles premiere of Andy Warhols last film, SAN DIEGO SURF? I am especially proud that Outfest has expanded its reach into mentorship and education, ensuring that future generations tell meaningful stories. This years Outfest Los Angeles boasts three films developed in the Outfest Screenwriting Lab: G.B.F., HOT GUYS WITH GUNS and PIT STOP, as well as five short films created through OutSet: The Young Filmmakers Project, a collaboration between LifeWorks and Outfest. Los Angeles isnt the only place you can find Outfest. This September 611 we present NewFest in New York, part of a strategic partnership with NewFest and Film Society of Lincoln Center. I want to thank all the volunteers, filmmakers, members, sponsors and film lovers who are at the heart of Outfest. You play a crucial role in inspiring storytellers, building community, promoting equality and changing lives. I look forward to celebrating 2013 Outfest Los Angeles with you!

OPENING NIGHT GALA

THURSDAY | July 11 | 8:00pm | Orpheum Theatre

C.O.G.

Dir/Scr: Kyle Patrick Alvarez, 2013, USA, 88 min.

OPENING NIGHT GALA

The first feature based on the writings of best-selling author David Sedaris, C.O.G. captures the living legends stringently funny perspective and cements director Kyle Patrick Alvarez as a gifted young storyteller. Recent college graduate David (Jonathan Groff, Glee) decides to get close to nature, and the working class, by spending a summer picking apples in Oregon with his friend Jennifer (Troian Bellisario, Pretty Little Liars). Even after she blows him off, he charges ahead on a picaresque journey that will take him from orchard to processing plant to an arts and crafts workshop, guided along the way by an increasingly eccentric and motley bunch of mentors. Whether trying to interpret the possible flirtations of co-worker Curly (Corey Stoll, House of Cards) or resisting the religious hard-sell from Bible-thumping Jon (Denis OHare, True Blood), David finds himself on the most complicated path of all figuring out who he is and what he wants. The stunning ensemble cast includes Casey Wilson (Happy Endings), Dean Stockwell (BLUE VELVET) and Dale Dickey (WINTERS BONE). Outfest is honored to open its 31st film festival with this bitingly witty coming of age tale anchored in warmth and insight.

Kyle Patrick Alvarez is a 29-year-old, Los Angeles-based writer-director. His second feature film is C.O.G., which is based on a story by David Sedaris, and which premiered in competition at this years Sundance Film Festival. In 2010, his screenwriting and directorial debut, EASIER WITH PRACTICE, won him the prestigious Someone to Watch Award at the Independent Spirit Awards while also being nominated for Best First Feature.

THE 17TH ANNUAL OUTFEST ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: KIMBERLY PEIRCE

If Hollywood has a tendency to pigeonhole filmmakers, its downright insistent on wedging queer female directors into a very limited space. Over the last 15 years, however, writer-director Kimberly Peirce has managed to elude the box, operating in a variety of genres with a gift for genuine characterization and storytelling. Peirce burst onto the scene with 1999s BOYS DONT CRY, a compelling retelling of the life and death of transman Brandon Teena. Hilary Swank won a well-deserved Best Actress Oscar for her powerful, gimmickfree portrayal of Brandon, and the film was showered with awards from critics and festivals worldwide. Kudos aside, BOYS DONT CRY announced to the world a powerful, singular voice, a promise that Peirce fulfilled with her compelling follow-up, STOP-LOSS (2008). Peirces look at the trials of U.S. soldiers being sent back into combat once again demonstrated a gift for portraying working-class concerns without condescension. While Peirces work often uncovers painful truths, it also inspires viewers to pursue their own bliss and to overcome their own obstacles. She is one of the leading chroniclers of the LGBT experience, but her sense of humanity touches all of her characters. With her eagerly awaited take on Stephen Kings CARRIE, due out later this year, and several screenplays of various genres in development, Peirces career promises to take her and us to any number of destinations, guided by her sure and steady hand.

PIT STOP

Dir: Yen Tan, Scr: Yen Tan, David Lowery, 2013, USA, 80 min.

GOD LOVES UGANDA

Dir: Roger Ross Williams, 2013, USA, subtitled, 83 min.

CENTERPIECE SCREENINGS

The modest lives of two rugged Texans intertwine in Yen Tans refreshingly grounded, quietly sexy PIT STOP. A 2009 Outfest Screenwriting Lab project that blossomed into a 2013 Sundance darling, Tans yarn moves through a blue-collar town and observes how a handsome contractor named Gabe (Bill Heck), spends time with his ex-wife Shannon (Amy Seimetz, UPSTREAM COLOR) and their daughter. Across town, Ernesto (Marcus DeAnda) ignores his flagging relationship with a much younger man and sits vigil at the bedside of an ailing ex. When Ernesto and Gabe meet unexpectedly one day at a local gas station, a connection forms that has the potential to alter both of their lives for good. In his touching follow-up to CIAO, writer-director Yen Tan provides an evocative glimpse into the everyday lives of two Southern men seeking love and affection over aching solitude. As far from the beaten path as its protagonists, this dreamy feature is a different kind of love story with depth, clarity and no shortage of sexual tension.
CENTERPIECE POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium AFTER-PARTY: The Abbey

As virulently antigay American evangelicals find less of an audience for their hateful message at home, they have sought a new demographic in Africa. This surprisingly funny and infuriating new documentary from Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams examines how the nation of Uganda has thrown open its arms to discredited and oblivious ministers who, in deadpan interviews, appear completely unaware of how their teachings have induced politicians to put forward the countrys infamous kill the gays legislation. But the film also introduces us to Ugandan clergy who, both at home and abroad, are risking excommunication and even death to defend the unpopular cause of LGBT equality. From its chilling examination of state-sanctioned bigotry to its darkly comical one-on-ones with bright-eyed, tone-deaf missionaries, GOD LOVES UGANDA provides powerful insight into the ignorance (cloaked in religion) exported by the United States to the rest of the world.
CENTERPIECE POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium

Malaysian-born and Austin-based Yen Tan is a writer, director and graphic designer. His award-winning films have screened at festivals worldwide and picked up video and theatrical distribution. He appeared on the cover of The Austin Chronicle, where he was profiled for his film poster designs (including GAYBY and SOCIAL BUTTERFLY). His new feature, PIT STOP, had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Roger Ross Williams directed and produced MUSIC BY PRUDENCE, winner of the 2010 Academy Award for documentary short. He is the first African American to win an Oscar for directing and producing a film. Williams began his career producing political satire for Comedy Central and Michael Moores TV Nation. He went on to work as a broadcast journalist for ABC, NBC, MSNBC and CNN, ultimately producing and directing numerous primetime specials for PBS, ABC, CBS, Sundance Channel and NYT Television.

REACHING FOR THE MOON

Dir: Bruno Barreto, Scr: Carolina Kotscho, Julie Sayres, Matthew Chapman, 2013, Brazil, subtitled, 116 min.

ALICE WALKER: BEAUTY IN TRUTH

Dir/Scr: Pratibha Parmar, 2013, UK/USA, 82 min.

Veteran filmmaker Bruno Barreto (DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS) returns with a steamy tale of an unlikely romance between two extraordinary lesbian artists, set against the backdrop of political upheaval and a clash of cultures. Grappling with writers block, legendary American poet Elizabeth Bishop (Miranda Otto) travels to 1950s Rio de Janeiro to visit her college friend, Mary (Tracy Middendorf). Hoping to find inspiration on Marys sprawling estate, Elizabeth winds up with much more a tempestuous relationship with Marys bohemian partner, architect Lota de Macedo Soares (Glria Pires), that rocks the staid writer to her foundation. Alcoholism, geographical distance and a military coup come between the lovers, but their intimate connection would span decades and forever impact the life and work of these two extraordinary artists. The attraction of two polar-opposite women has rarely been so volatile and so erotically charged on the big screen.
CENTERPIECE POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium AFTER-PARTY: The Abbey SPONSORED BY:

Alice Walkers extraordinary journey from sharecroppers daughter to activist, journalist, poet and Pulitzer Prizewinning novelist of The Color Purple comes to vivid life in this compelling and inspirational documentary. Courting controversy through her life choices (relationships with white men, and later with women), her work and her outspoken political advocacy, Walker emerges as a vibrant, fiercely intelligent and dedicated woman who has defied the odds to become one of this generations most fascinating figures. Her personal and professional accomplishments, reflected against a period of progress, violence and upheaval, celebrate fulfillment and self-expression against forces that conspire to silence and marginalize outsiders. Featuring testimonials from collaborators and peers (including Steven Spielberg, Yoko Ono, Sapphire, Gloria Steinem, Jewelle Gomez, Quincy Jones and Peter Guber) as well as intimate interviews with Walker herself, director Pratibha Parmar offers rare insight into a complicated and provocative artist.
CENTERPIECE POST-SCREENING RECEPTION: DGA Atrium AFTER-PARTY: Amalfi Ristorante

CENTERPIECE SCREENINGS

His comedy DONA FLOR AND HER TWO HUSBANDS was Brazils highest-grossing film until 2011, with more than 12 million tickets sold. There could be no better way to close this years festival than with G.B.F., a groundbreaking twist on the classic teen comedy. When closet-case Tanner (Michael J. Willett) is outed by his high schools overeager GSA, he becomes a hot commodity for three teen queens who believe that a G.B.F. gay best friend is this seasons must-have accessory. More powerful than any bullies, fashionista Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars), drama queen Caprice (Xosha Roquemore, PRECIOUS) and Mormon Shley (Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) stop at nothing to score Tanner as their pet, even if it means driving a wedge between him and his real G.B.F. Brent (Paul Iacono, The Hard Times of RJ Berger). Director Darren Steins flashy, hilarious comedy about the changing landscape of high school acceptance features a riotously funny performance by Will & Grace star Megan Mullally, the most quotable one-liners since MEAN GIRLS, and ingenious references to your favorite teen films and shows, including SIXTEEN CANDLES, CARRIE and Glee. So invite your G.B.F.s, B.F.F.s, BFs, GFs, FBs and tell your GPS to take you to Closing Night. We promise itll be totes amazeballs!

SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES

Dir/Scr: Del Shores, 2013, USA, 135 min.

TEST
Dir/Scr: Chris Mason Johnson, 2013, USA, 90 min.

Freespirited young lesbian Andy (writer-director Drew Denny) and her reserved childhood friend Liv (Sarah Hagan, Freaks and Geeks) are traveling across the Southwest to disperse Andys fathers ashes. Starting out building campfires, drinking, snuggling and reminiscing about the good old days, tensions arise as the trip progresses, forcing them to examine the core of their relationship. Are they friends or something more? Dennys autobiographical comedy about connection, the open road, and yes, how to have fun with your pants on, is a joyride of sweet twists and turns.

BEYOND THE WALLS

Dir/Scr: David Lambert, 2012, Belgium, subtitled, 98 min.

There are maladjusted teens, and then theres Pol, whose best friend is a walking, talking stuffed bear who sounds like HAL, the evil computer in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. (TED, this aint.) As Pol tries to unravel the meaning behind a strange series of circumstances involving his gay friend, a local girls death, a sexy new transfer student and his English teacher (Martin Freeman, THE HOBBIT), he finds that nothing in this weird, weird world is what it seems. Evoking the strange and sometimes sinister mood of DONNIE DARKO, AMERICAN BEAUTY, ELEPHANT and KABOOM, ANIMALS is like a mysterious dream youll want to have over and over again.

Paulo, a sensitive pianist, meets a brooding bartender named Ilir one night in Brussels. The two fall in love but are soon at odds over issues of fidelity, trust and, ultimately, the iron-clad indifference of the law. With candidness and grace, director David Lambert paints a vivid portrait of romance in Belgium, taking us through sex shops, silent cinemas, jail cells and, most memorably, into the headspace of two men hopelessly infatuated with the idea of love.

SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER Dir: Leesong Hee-il, 2012, South Korea, subtitled, 37 min. GOING SOUTH Dir: Leesong Hee-il, 2012, South Korea, subtitled, 45 min.

A country wrestling with rampant LGBT abuse, Nepal has just released its first-ever explicitly gay-themed film, the sensual and emotionally rich SOONGAVA: DANCE OF THE ORCHIDS. Two girls, Diya and Kiran, fall into a secret love affair just as one is being forced into an arranged marriage. Madly in love and unwilling to put up with the strict societal restraints imposed upon them, they decide to run off together and, in the process, rid themselves of a community they can no longer call home.

The tension between rage and desire simmer beneath every frame of SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER and GOING SOUTH, two sexually charged films from up-and-coming Korean filmmaker Leesong Hee-il. In SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER, a teacher gets blackmailed into entertaining a love-struck student hellbent on getting him into bed. A similar power struggle emerges in GOING SOUTH after a sergeant kidnaps his superior on their way back to an army base with hopes the two will run off together. Both narratives take fascinating turns that force the audience to re-evaluate whos the victim and whos the aggressor.

BAYOU MAHARAJAH: THE TRAGIC GENIUS OF JAMES BOOKER

Dir: Lily Keber, 2013, USA, 93 min.

To work as one of the four remaining thirdtrimester abortion doctors in the United States is to live with daily threats and constant condemnation from pro-life activists. After the Kansas-based Dr. George Tiller was murdered in 2009, his remaining colleagues, including lesbian physician Dr. Shelley Sella, must cope with a difficult and widely misunderstood profession that is based entirely on saving womens lives and protecting their well-being. With unflinching candidness and empathy, AFTER TILLER, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, highlights the devastating choices both doctors and patients must make as well as the vitriol and judgment they must endure from those who see them as nothing more than murderers.

Brilliant gay jazz pianist James Booker was known at various points in his career as the Black Liberace, the Ivory Emperor and Little Chopin. Yet his incredible, tumultuous life has never received proper attention until now. Director Lily Kebers portrait traces Bookers life from his early years as a chart-topping child prodigy to the end, where he performed onstage in his underwear, dishing out drug-fueled conspiracy theories. Featuring interviews with the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint, as well as a generous helping of archival footage, the film brings to life the unforgettable story of this amazing musician.

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

Dir: PJ Raval, 2013, USA, 110 min.

Wisecracking Robert runs the oldest surviving gay bar in Texas. Dennis looks for love after a lifetime of being in the closet about his sexuality and his cross-dressing. Ty manages a gay senior advocacy group in NYC and hopes his boyfriend will pop the question once the state legalizes gay marriage. Director PJ Raval (TRINIDAD) takes a heartfelt look at three stories of the everyday struggles that come with aging. Though these unique men resist easy classification, Ravals compelling film sounds a much-needed alarm about the care and kindness we must give our LGBT elders before its too late.

Dir: Eric Slade, Stephen Silha, Dawn Logsdon, 2012, USA, 83 min.

BORN THIS WAY

Dir: Shaun Kadlec and Deb Tullman, 2013, USA, subtitled, 82 min.

A leading light in the postwar San Francisco Renaissance, James Broughton was an omnisexual poet and filmmaker. His reverence for unbridled joy through childlike creativity and silliness put him perfectly in tune with the flowering of free-spirited experimentation in the 1960s, of which his film THE BED (1968) is a cultural milestone. BIG JOY features a wealth of archival footage and original interviews with key people from Broughtons life, including poignant testimony from his wife as well as the younger male lover with whom he found a powerful connection late in life.

Suspenseful and riveting, BORN THIS WAY had its premiere at the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival. Shot in Cameroon, where homosexuality is punishable with a five-year prison sentence, the film observes Gertrude, a young lesbian, as she hesitantly comes out to the nun who raised her in a convent. Meanwhile, Cedric, a young gay man, is determined to stay in his home even as his neighbors escalate their violent threats. From their base in an HIV treatment center, these two brave souls risk life and liberty to create positive momentum for LGBT rights, even as they face overwhelming personal struggles.

It was a vortex of sexual liberation, glamour and incendiary social change first helping to legalize homosexuality in New York City and later, with its legendary cabaret, launching the careers of such stars as Labelle, Barry Manilow and Bette Midler. CONTINENTAL is directed by Malcolm Ingram, winner of the Grand Jury Award at Outfest 2006 for his documentary SMALL TOWN GAY BAR.

An eye-opening look at a healthcare crisis happening in the rural American South, where HIV is spreading fast with few resources to fight it. Kathie is the passionate director of AIDS Alabama, working tirelessly to redress the disproportionate allocation of federal AIDS moneys. Monica and Tammy run a Louisiana HIV retreat on virtually no budget. Josh is a young, gifted, emotionally candid black gay man with HIV doing his best against terrible odds to pursue a college education. DEEPSOUTH tackles these tough realities with a stunning degree of humanity, highlighting the grace and perseverance of a handful of unsung southern heroes undaunted by the difficulties at hand.

IAN HARVIE SUPERHERO

Dir: Liam Sullivan, Scr: Ian Harvie, 2013, USA, 71 min.

Defiantly out of the closet well before it was socially acceptable, Gore Vidal alternately charms and infuriates in this wickedly funny and insightful documentary about one of Americas great thinkers. A natural aristocrat from a powerful family, Vidal seemed destined for politics, but instead became a novelist. After getting blacklisted in the 40s for writing pioneering gay novel The City and the Pillar, Vidal spent much of his life spitting elegantly phrased, vitriolic truths at the American political establishment. Just before Vidal passed, director Nicholas Wrathall captured the authors singular wit in candid one-on-one interviews that reveal the volatile genius behind this one-of-a-kind iconoclast and provocateur.

I AM DIVINE features interviews with key people in Divines life, including Waters and the late Frances Milstead, Divines mother, plus a wealth of film clips and thrilling footage of Divines inimitable live performances. Now Harvie (with the help of executive producer Cho) unveils his first-ever live standup comedy special, poking fun at topics from top surgery to his fear of public restrooms to his active sex life. Harvies unique act queers the traditionally macho, sex-obsessed world of stand up in ways you wont believe, proving that laughter cuts across all gender identities and ultimately unites us all.

TURNING features live performances of Antony and the Johnsons favorites Hope Theres Someone, You Are My Sister and I Fell In Love with a Dead Boy.

SATURDAY | July 20 | 7:00pm | DGA 1 Dir: Travis Mathews, James Franco, Scr: Travis Mathews, 2012, USA, 60 min.

To avoid an X rating, 40 minutes of footage was cut from the controversial 1980 gay slasher movie CRUISING. In a provocative reimagining of this censored material, directors Travis Mathews (I WANT YOUR LOVE) and James Franco create an explicit and steamy documentary film-within-a-film about gay sex and masculinity. As the straight lead, Val, prepares to assume the Al Pacino position, he is forced to confront his own sexual boundaries and discomforts, which flare as he pushes deeper into this iconic gay interior. The film had its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
