Council resolutions. In accordance with long-standing position, Portugal has voted in favor of increasing the status of Palestine at the UN. We also do so in recognition of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Fayyad for their unwavering commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution to the conflict, as well as efforts in preparing Palestinian institutions for statehood. In our view, reject violence and chose the diplomatic channels are fundamental to achieving peace. Portugal hopes that this UN decision will give a much needed boost to the peace process. A just peace, durable and comprehensive can only be achieved through direct negotiations. Therefore, we urge the parties to resume negotiations without further delay or preconditions. We welcome in this respect, the statement of President Abbas to the Assembly reiterated its commitment to the peace process. The international community now had to exert all efforts to ensure rapid resumption of credible negotiations with a view to the final settlement which brought about the realization of the two-state solution independent, sovereign, democratic state, viable and contiguous Palestinian side live alongside Israel in peace and security on the basis of the pre-1967 borders, while ensuring a lasting peace for all people in the region.
