Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Unit Plan SPE 527 Spring 2013

Unit Plan Summary of Unit Symmetry: During this lesson, students will use a hands-on method to identify lines of symmetry. SWBAT to understand and identify symmetry and asymmetry, identify lines of symmetry in figures and objects, draw figures with specified symmetry and recognize congruence in mirror images. Students will do online activities to reinforce what they have learned about lines of symmetry. Learning Standards (ILS, CRS, CCSS) 9B1c.R2 Identify lines of symmetry 12.A.1b Categorize living organisms using a variety of observable features (e.g., size, color, shape, backbone) c9.B.1 Identify lines of symmetry in simple figures and construct symmetrical figures using various concrete materials. CC.2.W.8 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. 8.B.1 Solve problems involving pattern identification and completion of patterns. Unit Details Subject Area Math, Science, Art, Reading/Writing, Functional Learner Profile Self-contained 2nd grade classroom Time Frame This unit plan will last 4 weeks. Summative Assessments My summative assessments would include photographing the students work along with checklists, rubrics and worksheets Word Bank symmetry/ symmetrical - something that is exactly the same on both sides; even or balance. One half is the reflection of the other half.

line of symmetry - the imaginary line where you could fold the image and have both halves match exactly.

reflection - looks the same on both sides of a mirror line

asymmetry/assymetrical not the same on both sides; not symmetrical

horizontal side to side

vertical up and down

equal/uniform/same being the same

pattern - is a group of symbols that repeats over and over

mirror image

balance - the ways in which the elements (lines, shapes, colors, textures, etc.) of a piece are arranged.

Congruent - exactly the same size and shape

Thematic Book List Create an annotated bibliography of at least 10 age-appropriate books that fit into this unit. Title: Is It Symmetrical? Seeing Symmetry Author/Illustrat or: Nancy Kelly Allen Loreen Leedy Publisher: & Copyright date: Rourke Pub. LLC, 2010 Holiday House Inc., 2012 Summary of book: This math concept book engages young readers through simple text and photos as they learn about symmetry. Once you start looking, you can find symmetry all around you. It's in words and even letters. It's in both nature and man-made things. In fact, art, decoration, and buildings are full of it. This clear and concise book explains different types of symmetry and shows you how to spot them make your own symmetrical masterpieces. Teaches the concept of half and points out symmetry in nature. Let's Fly a KiteWhen Bob and Hannah split something, the two pieces had better be symmetrical--exactly the same. BUt to fly their kite, they'll have to learn something new-cooperation! Simple text and colorful photos make learning important concepts easy. Familiar two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes and their properties from home and school are used to introduce children to symmetry and asymmetry, lines of symmetry, and congruence. Have you ever noticed that some things look the same and others do not? Why do some items look symmetrical? Embark on an adventure with Billy, Chloe, and Grandpa and discover symmetry in our world. You will learn more about lines of symmetry, congruent shapes, and rotational symmetry in everyday objects, animals, and nature. Introduces the concept of symmetry 3

and demonstrates its presence in natural objects, including ferns, butterflies, human faces, and starfish., Introduces the concept of symmetry and demonstrates its presence in natural objects, including leaves, butterflies, human faces, and starfish. "Red lace, yellow lace. . . learn to tie your shoe." A set of verses, step-bystep color illustrations, and a model child's shoe with real laces are the components of this charming, instructive package that gently challenges toddlers' hand-eye coordination. Complete with detailed instructions for tying one's shoes, a colorfully illustrated easy reader tells of a little girl's happiness in learning how to tie her own laces on her favorite pair of shoes. In a style similar to M. C. Escher's well-known lithographs and woodcuts -- and in the tradition of Dover's everpopular optical-illusion coloring books -- comes this unique collection of 30 swirling symmetrical designs. Intricate, interlocking images of people, animals, and abstract patterns range from realistic figures to bug-eyed frogs and flying pigs.
