Lesson: Mixed lesson Subject: Leisure activities Textbook: Snapshot, Longman Time: 50 minutes Previous Work: Consolidation of language and skills Communication: Leisure activities Language focus: Making suggestions and expressing opinion, with would like/would prefer and would rather Skills: speaking, reading, writing, listening Objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to: Aims: distinguish between would like/would prefer and would rather Talk about the events they could go to in Liverpool make suggestions and express preferences, choose alternatives Express their own opinion about places to go to in Liverpool Practise the grammar structures under discussion in sentences of their own.

Ss must be eager to participate. Class profile: These Ss are 6th graders and have already been introduced to English Grammar structure and vocabulary Anticipated problems: Taking into consideration that 2-3students have a poor level of knowledge and their motivation is rather low, the teacher expects that a part of her young students might not participate in the teaching/learning process as expected. Possible solution: If Ss do not understand the oral commands or the tasks, they will be translated into Romanian. Aids: Board, notebook, textbook, handouts, viewer Methods: brainstorming, word webs, conversation, reading, explanation, elicitation, description. - T explains that they are going to talk about leisure activities -T then asks Ss to look at some advertising posters in the textbook (pages 92-93) and match the pictures with the appropriate events. -T asks Ss to compare and contrast the pictures orally and briefly answer the question: Which of these events would you like to see? -T highlights the grammar structures usually used to make suggestions and express preferences and writes them on the blackboard. -T points the fact that would like/would prefer are followed by a long infinitive (infinitive with to) whereas would rather is followed by a short infinitive (infinitive without to). -T also has Ss pay attention to the spelling of long and short forms: e.g.: I would like/would prefer/would rather vs. Id like/d prefer/d rather -T has Ss take a look at the Grammar flash section (page 95) and make rules. - T shows Ss short films with the events in Liverpool -T asks Ss to work in pairs and interview one another using a short set of hypothetical questions in order to state their preferences - Ss compare answers with their partners. - T encourages Ss to exchange opinions on the topic, argue their point of view and give examples to support their ideas. - Ss read their answers

Assessment

- Ss must devise a travel planner and write about a holiday destination. They must give details about the trip: number of days, main attractions, etc. and explain why they choose that particular destination, using prefer, would prefer and would rather to express preferences. (5-10 lines) -T praises all the Ss for their participation during the entire lesson and gives pieces of advice to the shy ones. -T shall give 3-4 marks taking into consideration the involvement of Ss.
