The Gourmet by Hulic: Mixed-Use Food Destination
with Mehmet Ozdemir; critics: Galia Solomonoff and Vishaan Chakrabarti For a site in the Ginza, in Tokyo, Japan, a destination for food culture that includes a hotel, co-working office, TV studio, food-related retail, cooking school, markets, and restaurants. At the ground floor, the terminal for a proposed LRT brings in visitors and hotel guests as well as fresh food from the wholesale market. Separate circulation patterns for guests, workers, and visitors ensure privacy and adequate movement through the building. Cantilevered restaurant volumes provide a luxury dining experience and unique access for the hotel guests. Software: Rhino, V-ray for Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite

Illusion Wall: Custom Curtain Wall Design
critic: Robert Heintges A system of unique aluminum panels hung from a regular, unitized curtain wall gives the illusion of a three-dimensional, randomly-patterned wall. The panels cantilever over the unit joints to conceal the regular units behind. Fixed and operable windows are spaced randomly throughout the units, blending in with the panels and creating a dappled lighting effect on the interior. Intended for a library, the wall provides excellent light filtering. Software: AutoCAD, Rhino

Permanent Flexibility: Mid-Rise Housing for Harlem
with John Barnes; critic Frederic Levrat Our housing design attemps to create future-oriented housing, which we call permanent flexibility. The apartment floors can easily be converted to offices, and vice versa, as the structural grid accommodates both types of programs. The apartments are accessed from central cores that contain communal spaces for the residents or that can be used as lobbies for commercial floors. Deep mega-balconies on multiple levels provide sheltered outdoor space. The individual apartment units are designed to accommodate a range of family sizes, and include both twolevel lofts and single-level standard units. At the street level, large areas of retail, food stores, and public services are easily accessed from outside, while offices on the second level are visually accessible from the street. A high school is incorporated into the second level. All building parking is underground. Software: Revit Architecture, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite

Vertical Concourse: Mid-Manhattan Library Addition
critic: Robert Marino This project uses the idea of a hypostyle hall as the organizational principle for the building, with multifunctional reinforced columns acting as shelves, tables, and structure. Bookcases are grouped around multistory cut-outs that reveal the hypostyle nature of the building at various points in the plans. The cut-outs also follow vertical circulation paths among the floors, which are organized programmatically. Floors with similar programs (library subject matter) are grouped together by set-back distance and are connected by the circulation areas. The elevations are also cut back at the areas of greatest circulation and bookcase density to reveal these elements on the facade. Thus, set-backs both distinguish groupings of floors and reveal program and circulation within. Software: Rhino, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite

ICEcycle: Ice Manufacturing Plant
with Jenna Miller, Anthony Sunga, and Jenny Ratner; critic: A. Jay Hibbs This ice plant design integrates the manufacturing process into the mechanical system design, using excess ice for building cooling and groundsource heat pumps to reduce energy consumption from the grid. The structural system supports the ice box above the ground to create an open entrance plaza below. Additional sustainable components include an extensive green wall and roof deck, permeable pavement and water collection in the parking area, and integrated shading for the curtain wall.
