GREENSTONE OVERVIEW

What is Greenstone?
is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections open-source, multilingual software

Finding information
constructs full-text indexes from the document text metadata indexes

Index structures are all created automatically.

Document formats
variety of formats converted into standard XML by plug-ins for indexing

Plug-ins convert plain text, HTML, Word, PDF documents, and email messages.

Multimedia and multilingual documents


can contain text, pictures, audio and video non-textual material is either linked into the textual documents or accompanied by textual descriptions (such as figure captions) Unicode - is a standard scheme for representing the character sets used in the world's languages allows consistent translation to different languages

Distribution
collections are accessed over the Internet, published, or on a self-installing Windows CD-ROM produced by New Zealand Digital Library (University of Waikato) distributed by UNESCO and Human Info NGO

Greenstone is readily extensible with GNU-licensed modules.

version 2.85 is the latest stable release version 3.05 is the research version of Greenstone and still incomplete and not stable

Download the latest software distribution from the GDLS website (http://www.greenstone.org/download):

Start>All Programs>Greenstone-2.85

Icons
Click on the book icon to read the corresponding book. Click on the bookshelf icon to look at books on that subject. View the document. Open this folder to view the contents. Click on the icon to close the book. Click on the arrow to go to the next section. Click on the icon to go back to the previous section. Open this page in a new window. Expand table of contents. Display all text. Highlight search terms.
