The Potter/McKean Dairy Princess Promotion Committee is
searching for the 2009-2010 Dairy Princess Court. Any young
lady age 6-24 with a connection to the dairy industry is

CUB SCOUT PACK #416 SCOUTING FOR FOOD
Cub Scout Pack #416 gathered Tuesday night to hand out
the Yellow Scouting For Food Tags in the West Washington
neighborhoods. We had over 20 Cub Scouts and their families
gather in the rain to hand out the door tags.

Cise of Cub Scout Pack#416.
The yellow scouting for food tags are all over the city of
Bradford, as all of the Scouts come together for the common
good of promoting the gathering of food to benefit the Salvation
Army Food Pantry. Cub Scout Pack #416, #498 as well as Boy
Scout Troops #416, 498, and Venture Crew #450 are all lending
a hand. Also, Cub Scout Pack #416 collected donations in
Bradford at Parkview Supermarket and WalMart on Saturday,
April 25th.

“W.C. Handy: The Life and Times of the Man Who Made the Blues”
by David Robertson Reviewed by Larry Cox
W.C. Handy might not have been the father of the blues, but a new book
suggests that at the very least he was the father of the commercialization of
the blues. William Christopher Handy was born in 1873 in Florence, Ala., the
son of a preacher. He studied at Teachers Agricultural and Mechanical
College in Huntsville and then joined a minstrel show as a cornet player.
After touring for several years, he formed his own band in Memphis in 1903.
While waiting at a train station late one night in Mississippi, he heard
something that changed his life. A black musician sat near Handy, and as he
played his guitar, he pressed a knife on the strings. The sound was
unforgettable, and it was one of Handy’s first encounters with the blues. The
experience was electrifying and impacted everything in his life that followed.
Robertson’s highly readable account of Handy’s life is must reading for
those interested in the history of American music. In addition to his
successful musical catalog, in 1914 Handy composed the most celebrated
blues song ever written: “St. Louis Blues.” Recalling a visit to St. Louis years
before, Handy incorporated the memory of a drunken woman stumbling
down a street near the riverfront. As she passed him, she muttered, “My
man’s got a heart like a rock cast in the sea.” It became a fragment of one of
the most important lyrics ever written.

After months of
wedding planning, you’re
finally in the home
stretch. You’ve selected
your wedding party,
chosen attire, found a
venue, lined up all of the
right professionals and
more. Now you’re working
on the decorations for
your reception, and boy,
could you use some help.
Here are some ideas.
When it comes to
reception décor, almost
anything goes. You can
coordinate everything for
a harmonious look, or you
can mix and match items
to create more visual
interest.
Depending upon the
venue, you may already
have a basic setup in
place. If you have rented
a banquet hall, for
example, the table and
chairs may already be in
place and you will have to
work with what you have.
If you are renting tables
and chairs, you don’t have
to go with the traditional
round tables. You can use
square or rectangular
tables or mix shapes and
sizes. If you wish, you can
disband with the
traditional head table and
seat yourself and the
groom at your own table
near the front.
Once you have the
seating arrangements
worked out, you can start
thinking about decorating

you can cover them with
crisp white linens for a
traditional feel, or you can

overlays. While you’re at

work on the centerpieces.
These can run the gamut
from floral arrangements
to candles. Many a bride
has used a variety of
pillar, taper and floating
candles to dress up her
reception tables. Strew
some artificial rose petals
or confections across the
table, and voila, you have
created instant drama
and romance.
Centerpieces can also
serve as favors. Cut
flowers in breakaway
vases, for example, make
great centerpieces that
guests can take home.

the room, along with
childhood photos of
themselves and the
groom.
The decorations you
choose for your reception
can be as traditional or
non-traditional as you
wish. You can stick to the
old tried and true, or you
can break out of the box.
